John 2:13-25

Destroy this sanctuary and in three days I will raise it up

Just before the Jewish Passover Jesus went up to Jerusalem, and in the Temple he found people selling cattle and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting at their counters there. Making a whip out of some cord, he drove them all out of the Temple, cattle and sheep as well, scattered the money-changers’ coins, knocked their tables over and said to the pigeon-sellers, ‘Take all this out of here and stop turning my Father’s house into a market.’ Then his disciples remembered the words of scripture: Zeal for your house will devour me. The Jews intervened and said, ‘What sign can you show us to justify what you have done?’ Jesus answered, ‘Destroy this sanctuary, and in three days I will raise it up.’ The Jews replied, ‘It has taken forty-six years to build this sanctuary: are you going to raise it up in three days?’ But he was speaking of the sanctuary that was his body, and when Jesus rose from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the scripture and the words he had said.

  During his stay in Jerusalem for the Passover many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he gave, but Jesus knew them all and did not trust himself to them; he never needed evidence about any man; he could tell what a man had in him.

    The Third Sunday of Lent reports about the situation, which was held in the Temple, where the Jews usual gathered to pray and listen to the word of God.  Jesus Christ was there too, but what may us wonder, it is the reaction of him, which was full of anger and tension. 

 

Why does Jesus react? Because of his care of the Temple, as a place of God and his Holiness. His attitude shows about great respect to the sacred place, as the Sanctuary of the Most High. 

 

This is a great opportunity to remind to us to pay attention about the proper attitude to the holy places, churches, and chapels. 

 

 

I would like to focus on another situation of the today’s Gospel of John. Jesus says, destroy this temple, and I will rebuild it in three days. The Jews were confused. How? The temple was built trough 46 years, and you would build it in three days? 

 

“But he was speaking of the sanctuary that was his body”. The answer of Christ became a confrontation about the real view of God and his temple. For the Jewish nation, the place was so important, where does God takes worship of his name. The most sacred place was Jerusalem and the Salomon’s Temple, where the ten commandments were, as the covenant between the Lord and man. 

 

But the perspective view of Jesus is wider, he says about the Church as the Mystic Body of him, which was born on the Cross, from the pierced side of Christ. For us, Christian buildings and material temples are relevant, but the presence of God, this is not a wall and a shape of the church, only, but the community of baptised people. 

 

Thank of this truth, we can worship our God, whenever we are, on the different continents of the earth, not being limited by one place. The whole Christian community meets God and receive holy sacraments in the Church, in the Mystic Body, which is in many different places. 

 

The church this material and the spiritual community, this is the venue of my personal meeting with Jesus, with his sacraments and the Resurrection. We are something more, than the bricks of the building, but through our spiritual involvement, we are the Body of Christ. 

 

May I mention about one thing, yet. Jesus mentions about the sanctuary of his Body, which is my soul, the place where the Lord dwells in me. Lent goes so quickly, and Christ wants to something from us, to reflect on my spiritual condition and heart. Let do so much, to prepare the sanctuary in me, to clean it of God’s grace, reaching God’s mercy in the font of the sacrament of confession, which heals and makes me unblemished before Him. 

 

Thanks be to God, for His Holy Body, Church, we can give our praise everywhere, not in one place, only.  Let us praise God for our parishes, spiritual homes, for the places of meeting with Jesus Christ and his grace. Amen.

Zbliżała się pora Paschy żydowskiej i Jezus udał się do Jerozolimy. W świątyni napotkał tych, którzy sprzedawali woły, baranki i gołębie oraz siedzących za stołami bankierów. Wówczas sporządziwszy sobie bicz ze sznurków, powyrzucał wszystkich ze świątyni, także baranki i woły, porozrzucał monety bankierów, a stoły powywracał. Do tych zaś, którzy sprzedawali gołębie, rzekł: „Weźcie to stąd, a nie róbcie z domu Ojca mego targowiska”. Uczniowie Jego przypomnieli sobie, że napisano: „Gorliwość o dom Twój pożera Mnie”. W odpowiedzi zaś na to Żydzi rzekli do Niego: „Jakim znakiem wykażesz się wobec nas, skoro takie rzeczy czynisz?” Jezus dał im taką odpowiedź: „Zburzcie tę świątynię, a Ja w trzech dniach wzniosę ją na nowo”. Powiedzieli do Niego Żydzi: „Czterdzieści sześć lat budowano tę świątynię, a Ty ją wzniesiesz w przeciągu trzech dni?” On zaś mówił o świątyni swego ciała. Gdy więc zmartwychwstał, przypomnieli sobie uczniowie Jego, że to powiedział, i uwierzyli Pismu i słowu, które wyrzekł Jezus. Kiedy zaś przebywał w Jerozolimie w czasie Paschy, w dniu świątecznym, wielu uwierzyło w imię Jego, widząc znaki, które czynił. Jezus natomiast nie zwierzał się im, bo dobrze wszystkich znał i nie potrzebował niczyjego świadectwa o człowieku. Sam bowiem wiedział, co się kryje w człowieku.

    Trzecia Niedziela Wielkiego Postu informuje o sytuacji, jaka miała miejsce w Świątyni, gdzie Żydzi zwykle gromadzili się na modlitwę i słuchanie słowa Bożego. Był tam także Jezus Chrystus. Może nas zdziwić jego reakcja, pełna złości i napięcia.

 

Dlaczego Jezus tak reaguje? Jego postawa świadczy o wielkim szacunku dla miejsca świętego jako Sanktuarium Najwyższego.

 

Jest to świetna okazja, aby przypomnieć nam o konieczności zwracania uwagi na właściwy stosunek do miejsc świętych, kościołów i kaplic.

 

 

Chciałbym zwrócić uwagę na inną sytuację dzisiejszej Ewangelii Jana. Jezus mówi: Zburzcie tę świątynię, a Ja w trzy dni ją odbuduję. Żydzi byli zdezorientowani. Jak?  Tą świątynię budowano przez 46 lat, a ty zbudowałbyś ją w trzy dni?

 

Jezus on mówił o świątyni, która była Jego Ciałem. Odpowiedź Chrystusa stała się konfrontacją na temat prawdziwego poglądu na Boga i Jego świątynię. Dla narodu żydowskiego było to niezwykle ważne miejsce, w którym czcił Boże imię. Najświętszym miejscem była Jerozolima i Świątynia Salomona, gdzie znajdowało się dziesięć przykazań jako przymierze między Panem a człowiekiem.

 

Perspektywa wypowiedzi Jezusa jest szersza, mówi On o Kościele jako o Jego Mistycznym Ciele, które narodziło się na krzyżu, z przebitego boku Chrystusa. Dla nas istotne są chrześcijańskie budowle i materialne świątynie, ale obecność Boga to nie tylko mur i kształt kościoła, to także wspólnota ochrzczonych.

 

Dziękujmy za tą prawdę, że możemy wielbić naszego Boga, gdziekolwiek jesteśmy, na różnych kontynentach ziemi, nie ograniczając się do jednego miejsca. Cała wspólnota chrześcijańska spotyka się z Bogiem i przyjmuje sakramenty święte w Kościele, w Ciele Mistycznym, które jest w wielu różnych miejscach.

 

Kościół to wspólnota materialna i duchowa, to jest miejsce mojego osobistego spotkania z Jezusem, z Jego sakramentami i Zmartwychwstaniem. Jesteśmy czymś więcej niż cegłami budynku, ale dzięki naszemu duchowemu zaangażowaniu jesteśmy Ciałem Chrystusa.

 

Pozwolę sobie jeszcze wspomnieć o jednej rzeczy. Jezus wspomina o świątyni Swojego Ciała, którą jest moja dusza, o miejscu, w którym Pan mieszka we mnie. Wielki Post mija tak szybko, a Chrystus chce od nas refleksji nad moją kondycją duchową i sercem. Czyńmy tak wiele, aby przygotować we mnie sanktuarium dla Niego, abym mógł się oczyścić łaskę Bożą, sięgając po miłosierdzie Boże w zdroju sakramentu spowiedzi, który uzdrawia i czyni nas nieskalanymi przed Nim.

 

Bogu niech będą dzięki za Jego Najświętsze Ciało, Kościół, w którym możemy chwalić Jego wszędzie, nie w jednym miejscu. Wysławiajmy Boga za nasze parafie, duchowe domy, za miejsca spotkania z Jezusem Chrystusem i Jego łaską. Amen.
