Mark 9:2-10

This is my Son, the Beloved

Jesus took with him Peter and James and John and led them up a high mountain where they could be alone by themselves. There in their presence he was transfigured: his clothes became dazzlingly white, whiter than any earthly bleacher could make them. Elijah appeared to them with Moses; and they were talking with Jesus. Then Peter spoke to Jesus: ‘Rabbi,’ he said ‘it is wonderful for us to be here; so let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.’ He did not know what to say; they were so frightened. And a cloud came, covering them in shadow; and there came a voice from the cloud, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him.’ Then suddenly, when they looked round, they saw no one with them any more but only Jesus.

  As they came down from the mountain he warned them to tell no one what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead. They observed the warning faithfully, though among themselves they discussed what ‘rising from the dead’ could mean.

    This day, the Second Sunday of Lent moves us closer to the celebration of the Holy Triduum, to the Holy Days of the Passion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. 

The second Sunday transfers us with Jesus, Peter, John, and James to the mountain distanced about 30 km from Nazareth, which we call the Transfiguration Mountain today. 

 

What happened, and what was the reason of the whole situation? To be able to understand this, we need to focus on time, when it happened. Christ was still teaching and preaching the Good News, but what must have come, it was before him, it means, the crucifixion, death, and humiliation from people. He knew, these days may have brought a lot of doubts and lack of faith in their hearts, and first the fear. Christ took the three Apostles, to strengthen the faith and the power of will, to rescue them before shame and fear, while the persecution of Jesus must come. During the Transfiguration, on the mountain, there are the two sign, Peter, John, and James see the Prophet of the Old Testament, Moses, and Elijah, the two constitutional persons for the Jews and the religion. The first one, took the Israelites to the Promised Land, giving the dignity as a nation, and the second one Elijah was a man, who fought for the obedience to God and the purity of faith for the Chosen Nation. After all, the Lord gave a powerful sign from Heaven, while the Father said; “This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him”. That moment and the declaration from heaven done God the Father were the complement of the revelation. This situation might have rescued them before fear and the despair, having seen the Lord scourged, humiliated, and killed for the sake of people around the world. 

 

From 20 centuries after his Resurrection, Jesus does the same, he gathers us on a mountain every single day, especially on the Sundays. He calls us to come to the Holy Eucharist, which is the memory of the Passion and the Resurrection of him. At every Mass, he transforms himself into the Body and Blood in a piece of bread and the drops of wine, to become present among us. He reveals his name in the Liturgy of the Word, we can get to know his name and love to everyone, listening his voice and teaching. The Mass is the Transfiguration Mountain for us, to where we go experience the living God. We come to strengthen our life, which is so often burdened of many things and worries. Jesus takes us with Peter, John, and James saying to us, here you are secure, because I have changed myself to feed you and protect you. At the Holy Mass we can find the shelter of God, who speaks, this is my Beloved Son, who breaks the bread for you, listen to him. 

 

May this Second Sunday of Lent and the journey to the Transfiguration Mountain make us aware, at least an hour a week (Sunday Mass), this is my time to meet Christ and to draw the help and strength of God. Amen.

Jezus wziął z sobą Piotra, Jakuba i Jana i zaprowadził ich samych osobno na górę wysoką. Tam przemienił się wobec nich. Jego odzienie stało się lśniąco białe tak, jak żaden wytwórca sukna na ziemi wybielić nie zdoła. I ukazał się im Eliasz z Mojżeszem, którzy rozmawiali z Jezusem. Wtedy Piotr rzekł do Jezusa: „Rabbi, dobrze, że tu jesteśmy; postawimy trzy namioty: jeden dla Ciebie, jeden dla Mojżesza i jeden dla Eliasza”. Nie wiedział bowiem, co należy mówić, tak byli przestraszeni. I zjawił się obłok, osłaniający ich, a z obłoku odezwał się głos: „To jest mój Syn umiłowany, Jego słuchajcie”. I zaraz potem, gdy się rozejrzeli, nikogo już nie widzieli przy sobie, tylko samego Jezusa. A gdy schodzili z góry, przykazał im, aby nikomu nie rozpowiadali o tym, co widzieli, zanim Syn Człowieczy nie powstanie z martwych. Zachowali to polecenie, rozprawiając tylko między sobą, co znaczy powstać z martwych.

    Ten dzień, II Niedziela Wielkiego Postu przybliża nas do uroczystości Triduum Świętego, do Świętych Dni Męki i Zmartwychwstania Jezusa Chrystusa.

Druga niedziela przenosi nas z Jezusem, Piotrem, Janem i Jakubem na górę odległą około 30 km od Nazaretu, którą dziś nazywamy Górą Przemienienia.

 

Co się stało i jaka była przyczyna całej sytuacji? Aby to zrozumieć, musimy skupić się na czasie, kiedy to się wydarzyło. Chrystus nadal nauczał i głosił Dobrą Nowinę, ale to, co musiało nadejść, było przed Nim, to znaczy ukrzyżowanie, śmierć i upokorzenie ze strony ludzi. Wiedział, że te dni mogły przynieść w sercach Apostołów wiele wątpliwości i brak wiary, a przede wszystkim strach. Chrystus wziął trzech z nich, aby umocnić wiarę i siłę woli, by ich uratować przed wstydem i strachem, gdy nadejdzie prześladowanie Jezusa. Podczas Przemienienia na górze mają miejsce dwa znaki: Piotr, Jan i Jakub widzą Proroków Starego Testamentu, Mojżesza i Eliasza, dwie osoby konstytucyjne dla Żydów i ich religii. Pierwszy z nich zabrał Izraelitów do Ziemi Obiecanej, nadając godność narodowi, a drugi Eliasz był człowiekiem, który walczył o posłuszeństwo Bogu i czystość wiary Narodu Wybranego.  Pan dał potężny znak z nieba, głos Ojca; „To jest mój Syn, Umiłowany. Jego słuchajcie". Chwila i oświadczenie z nieba złożone przez Boga Ojca były dopełnieniem objawienia. Ta sytuacja mogła ich ocalić przed strachem i rozpaczą, widząc Pana ubiczowanego, poniżonego i zabijanego dla dobra ludzi na całym świecie.

 

Od dwudziestu wieków po swoim Zmartwychwstaniu Jezus czyni to samo, każdego dnia gromadzi nas na górze, zwłaszcza w niedziele. Wzywa nas, abyśmy przyszli na Najświętszą Eucharystię, która jest pamiątką Jego Męki i Zmartwychwstania. Podczas każdej Mszy św.  On przemienia się w postacie Ciała i Krwi w kawałku chleba i kroplach wina, aby stać się obecnym wśród nas. Objawia Swoje imię w Liturgii Słowa, możemy poznać Jego miłość do każdego, wsłuchując się w Jego głos i nauczanie. Msza Święta jest dla nas Górą Przemienienia, do której idziemy, aby doświadczyć żywego Boga. Przychodzimy, aby wzmocnić swoje życie, które tak często jest obciążone wieloma sprawami i zmartwieniami. Jezus zabiera nas z Piotrem, Janem i Jakubem, mówiąc do nas: tutaj jesteście bezpieczni, ponieważ Ja się przemieniłem, aby was karmić i chronić. We Mszy Świętej możemy znaleźć schronienie Boga, który mówi, to jest mój Umiłowany Syn, który dla Was łamie chleb, słuchajcie Go.

 

Niech ta II Niedziela Wielkiego Postu i wędrówka na Górę Przemienienia uświadomią nam, że przynajmniej przez godzinę w tygodniu (niedzielna Msza św.), jest to mój czas na spotkanie z Chrystusem i zaczerpnięcie pomocy i łaski Bożej. Amen.
