John 13:1-15

Now he showed how perfect his love was

It was before the festival of the Passover, and Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to pass from this world to the Father. He had always loved those who were his in the world, but now he showed how perfect his love was.

  They were at supper, and the devil had already put it into the mind of Judas Iscariot son of Simon, to betray him. Jesus knew that the Father had put everything into his hands, and that he had come from God and was returning to God, and he got up from table, removed his outer garment and, taking a towel, wrapped it round his waist; he then poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel he was wearing. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, ‘Lord, are you going to wash my feet?’ Jesus answered, ‘At the moment you do not know what I am doing, but later you will understand.’ ‘Never!’ said Peter ‘You shall never wash my feet.’ Jesus replied, ‘If I do not wash you, you can have nothing in common with me.’ ‘Then, Lord,’ said Simon Peter ‘not only my feet, but my hands and my head as well!’ Jesus said, ‘No one who has taken a bath needs washing, he is clean all over. You too are clean, though not all of you are.’ He knew who was going to betray him, that was why he said, ‘though not all of you are.’

  When he had washed their feet and put on his clothes again he went back to the table. ‘Do you understand’ he said ‘what I have done to you? You call me Master and Lord, and rightly; so I am. If I, then, the Lord and Master, have washed your feet, you should wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example so that you may copy what I have done to you.’

 

    This afternoon, we have entered the most import days of our faith. Starting the Holy Triduum, we celebrate the Passion, Death and the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ. 

The prolog of this celebration is about the Last Supper, while Jesus Christ is instituting the Holy Eucharist of His Body and Blood. The whole situation in the cenacle took place. In the Book of Exodus, we have read today, it is the moment when Jews were commemorating the Passover of their leave from Egypt into the Promised Land. This historical moment has been commemorating up today by them, with the solemn meal among the family. 

Jesus Christ made a place of this celebration, making a new covenant, which is eternal, the covenant of his Body and Blood. We read about it in the First Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians. He gave a piece of bread, and couple drops of wine, saying; this is my Body and Blood, eat it and drink it, do this in the memory of me, until I will come again. The Passover Meal has been changed by the Holy Eucharist, which we do every day, as the Lord wants to. This is the meal for the Promised Land in heaven, not on earth, as it was promised to the Jews before. Jesus is truly present among us, wherever the Holy Mass is said, in different languages, among the people who gather in his name. This is the food for the eternity. Jesus said, I am the bread of life, whoever receives me, that person will get the eternal joy with me. Such a beautiful gift has been giving to us every day, which demands from us the proper spiritual disposition and thanksgiving to the Lord, for the great treasure of faith. We cannot pass over next to this gift indifferently. The Holy Eucharist is the most sacred treasure of us, it deserves for our reverence and respect. 

 

Every Holy Mass is a great lesson and teacher for us, how to live. The Saints were leading of the way of the Holy Eucharist in their life.   The Gospel of John does give us, that every Mass is a lesson, how to live. Christ washed the feet of the Apostles, welcoming them to do the same. My presence at Mass is about the lesson, everything what is happening now, it is important, we cannot be an idles people, who observe of what is going on, but participate actively in Mass, to learn from the Lord, how to make my life better. The Lord told the Apostles, I have washed your feet, do it the same, it means to be charitable to others. 

St. Justin, the Martyr of the II century gave us a beautiful description of the Holy Eucharist from the ancient history. His testimony to this, it is like a lesson, why to be a good disciple of Christ and to extend the power of the Holy Eucharist to the daily life. The historical resources confirm the older of the nowadays Masses. Justin says, at the beginning the priest teaches us reaching for the scriptures of the Old and New Testament, afterwards the eucharist liturgy and the reception and the Body of Christ take place, and those who cannot come (sick, elderly), they get the holy communion from the deacons at home.  

 

Looking at the historical document, we may notice the greatness of the Lord’s teaching in the Holy Eucharist, which is at hand for us. At the end of Mass the priest says, go in peace and glorify the Lord. This is the sending to us, you have reached my grace says the Lord, go now, and testify about God, how good he is. Jesus Christ, may you be glorified in Every Holy Eucharist. Amen.

Było to przed Świętem Paschy. Jezus, wiedząc, że nadeszła godzina Jego, by przeszedł z tego świata do Ojca, umiłowawszy swoich na świecie, do końca ich umiłował. W czasie wieczerzy, gdy diabeł już nakłonił serce Judasza Iskarioty, syna Szymona, aby Go wydał, Jezus, wiedząc, że Ojciec oddał Mu wszystko w ręce oraz że od Boga wyszedł i do Boga idzie, wstał od wieczerzy i złożył szaty. A wziąwszy prześcieradło, nim się przepasał. Potem nalał wody do misy. I zaczął obmywać uczniom nogi i ocierać prześcieradłem, którym był przepasany. Podszedł więc do Szymona Piotra, a on rzekł do Niego: "Panie, Ty chcesz mi umyć nogi?" Jezus mu odpowiedział: "Tego, co Ja czynię, ty teraz nie rozumiesz, ale poznasz to później". Rzekł do Niego Piotr: "Nie, nigdy mi nie będziesz nóg umywał". Odpowiedział mu Jezus: "Jeśli cię nie umyję, nie będziesz miał udziału ze Mną". Rzekł do Niego Szymon Piotr: "Panie, nie tylko nogi moje, ale i ręce, i głowę!" Powiedział do niego Jezus: "Wykąpany potrzebuje tylko nogi sobie umyć, bo cały jest czysty. I wy jesteście czyści, ale nie wszyscy". Wiedział bowiem, kto Go wyda, dlatego powiedział: "Nie wszyscy jesteście czyści". A kiedy im umył nogi, przywdział szaty i znów zajął miejsce przy stole, rzekł do nich: "Czy rozumiecie, co wam uczyniłem? Wy Mnie nazywacie „Nauczycielem” i „Panem”, i dobrze mówicie, bo nim jestem. Jeżeli więc Ja, Pan i Nauczyciel, umyłem wam nogi, to i wy powinniście sobie nawzajem umywać nogi. Dałem wam bowiem przykład, abyście i wy tak czynili, jak Ja wam uczyniłem".

    Dziś po południu weszliśmy w najważniejsze dni naszej wiary. Rozpoczynając Święte Triduum, obchodzimy Mękę, Śmierć i Zmartwychwstanie naszego Pana Jezusa Chrystusa.

Prologiem tej uroczystości jest Ostatnia Wieczerza, podczas której Jezus Chrystus ustanawia Najświętszą Eucharystię Swojego Ciała i Krwi. Cała sytuacja miała miejsce w Wieczerniku. W Księdze Wyjścia, jak dzisiaj czytamy, jest to moment, w którym Żydzi upamiętniali Paschę wyjścia z Egiptu do Ziemi Obiecanej. Tę historyczną chwilę upamiętniają do dziś, uroczystym posiłkiem w gronie rodzinnym.

Jezus Chrystus zmienił miejsce tej uroczystości, zawierając nowe przymierze, które jest wieczne, przymierze Swojego Ciała i Krwi. Czytamy o tym w Pierwszym Liście św. Pawła do Koryntian. Podał On kawałek chleba i kilka kropel wina, mówiąc: to jest Ciało i Krew moja, jedzcie i pijcie, czyńcie to na moją pamiątkę, aż przyjdę ponownie. Posiłek Paschalny został zmieniony przez Najświętszą Eucharystię, którą sprawujemy codziennie, tak jak chce tego Pan. To jest posiłek na drodze do Ziemi Obiecanej w niebie, a nie na ziemi, jak to było wcześniej obiecane Żydom. Jezus jest rzeczywiście obecny wśród nas, wszędzie tam, gdzie odprawiana jest Msza Święta w różnych językach, wśród ludzi, którzy gromadzą się w Jego imię. To jest pokarm na wieczność. Jezus powiedział: Ja jestem Chlebem Życia, kto mnie przyjmie, ten otrzyma ze mną radość wieczną. Taki piękny On dar daje nam na każdy dzień, co wymaga od nas odpowiedniego usposobienia duchowego i dziękczynienia Panu za wielki skarb wiary. Obok tego daru nie możemy przejść obojętnie. Najświętsza Eucharystia jest naszym najświętszym skarbem, zasługuje ona na naszą cześć i szacunek.

 

Każda Msza Święta jest dla nas wielką lekcją i nauczycielką jak żyć. Święci byli prowadzeni w swoim życiu drogą Najświętszej Eucharystii. Ewangelia Jana rzeczywiście uczy nas, że każda Msza św. jest lekcją, jak żyć. Chrystus umył nogi Apostołom, zachęcając ich, aby czynili to samo. Moja obecność na Mszy św. jest związana z lekcją, wszystko co się dzieje teraz, jest ważne, abyśmy nie byli ludźmi bezczynnymi, obserwującymi, ale byśmy aktywnie uczestniczyli we Mszy św., by uczyć się od Pana, jak sprawić, by moje życie lepsze. Pan powiedział Apostołom: Umyłem wam nogi, czyńcie to samo, to znaczy bądźcie miłosiernym wobec innych.

 

Św. Justyn, Męczennik II wieku, dał nam piękny opis Najświętszej Eucharystii z historii starożytnej. Jego świadectwo na ten temat jest jak lekcja, dlaczego warto być dobrym uczniem Chrystusa i rozszerzać moc Najświętszej Eucharystii na życie codzienne. Źródła historyczne potwierdzają ryt z dzisiejszych Mszy św. Justyn mówi, że na początku kapłan uczy nas sięgania do Pisma Świętego Starego i Nowego Testamentu, potem następuje liturgia eucharystyczna oraz przyjęcie Ciało Chrystusa, a ci, którzy nie mogą przyjść (chorzy, starsi) otrzymują Komunia Święta od diakonów w domu.

 

Patrząc na dokument historyczny, możemy dostrzec wielkość nauczania Pana w Najświętszej Eucharystii, która jest dla nas na wyciągnięcie ręki. Na zakończenie Mszy kapłan mówi: idźcie w pokoju i chwalcie Pana. To jest posłanie do nas, osiągnęliście moją łaskę, mówi Pan, idźcie teraz i dawajcie świadectwo o Bogu, jaki On jest dobry. Jezu Chryste bądź uwielbiony w każdej Najświętszej Eucharystii. Amen.
