Matthew 25:1-13

The wise and foolish virgins

Jesus told this parable to his disciples: ‘The kingdom of heaven will be like this: Ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were sensible: the foolish ones did take their lamps, but they brought no oil, whereas the sensible ones took flasks of oil as well as their lamps. The bridegroom was late, and they all grew drowsy and fell asleep. But at midnight there was a cry, “The bridegroom is here! Go out and meet him.” At this, all those bridesmaids woke up and trimmed their lamps, and the foolish ones said to the sensible ones, “Give us some of your oil: our lamps are going out.” But they replied, “There may not be enough for us and for you; you had better go to those who sell it and buy some for yourselves.” They had gone off to buy it when the bridegroom arrived. Those who were ready went in with him to the wedding hall and the door was closed. The other bridesmaids arrived later. “Lord, Lord,” they said “open the door for us.” But he replied, “I tell you solemnly, I do not know you.” So stay awake, because you do not know either the day or the hour.’

  The XXXII Sunday in Ordinary Time presents the Gospel of Matthew which tells us the parable about the ten women. Christ divided bridesmaids into two groups - five sensible in one group and five foolish in the other. He did it according to their deeds. 

 

While we are reading the today’s Gospel we may have a tendency to categorize. We may think that the bridesmaids, who forgot the oil, ignored the bridegroom. 

 

But the situation is more complicated, because that second group of women had deep desire and will to meet their bridegroom. Certainly, in their attitude was lack of proper and fervent preparation. 

 

And now we reach to the point concerning our relationship and involvement which is built on our acts and deeds. 

 

It is not enough to have some good will and desire to meet God. What we need is the real determination to build our relationship with Christ. 

God says in the Book of Revelation: “So, because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. Rev. 3,16. 

 

These 5 women represents the way of people who are lukewarm. They want to have God in the heart, but they do nothing to achieve it. Or even more, many people treat faith only as tradition without a greater meaning. 

 

Jesus says that this is the time to make decision. What side do you want to stay on, on the side of God or on His enemy’s side? 

 

God expects clarification, what side do we want to choose? If we want to be faithful, we need a lot of effort and work. 

Like these sensible women who were prepared completely for the coming of the bridegroom and gave the proof of faith. 

 

Let us do the same, let us give the evidence, that we really care for God. Amen.

Jezus opowiedział swoim uczniom tę przypowieść: „Królestwo niebieskie podobne będzie do dziesięciu panien, które wzięły swoje lampy i wyszły na spotkanie oblubieńca. Pięć z nich było nierozsądnych, a pięć roztropnych. Nierozsądne wzięły lampy, ale nie wzięły z sobą oliwy. Roztropne zaś razem z lampami zabrały również oliwę w naczyniach. Gdy się oblubieniec opóźniał, zmorzone snem wszystkie zasnęły. Lecz o północy rozległo się wołanie: "Oblubieniec idzie, wyjdźcie mu na spotkanie". Wtedy powstały wszystkie owe panny i opatrzyły swe lampy. A nierozsądne rzekły do roztropnych: "Użyczcie nam swej oliwy, bo nasze lampy gasną". Odpowiedziały roztropne: "Mogłoby i nam, i wam nie wystarczyć. Idźcie raczej do sprzedających i kupcie sobie". Gdy one szły kupić, nadszedł oblubieniec. Te, które były gotowe, weszły z nim na ucztę weselną i drzwi zamknięto. W końcu nadchodzą i pozostałe panny, prosząc: "Panie, panie, otwórz nam". Lecz on odpowiedział: "Zaprawdę powiadam wam, nie znam was". Czuwajcie więc, bo nie znacie dnia ani godziny”.

W XXXII Niedzielę Zwykłą czytamy Ewangelię Mateusza, która daje nam przypowieść o dziesięciu kobietach. Chrystus podzielił druhny na dwie grupy – pięć rozsądnych w jednej grupie i pięć rozsądnych w drugiej. Uczynił to według ich uczynków.

 

Czytając dzisiejszą Ewangelię, możemy mieć tendencję do kategoryzowania. Możemy pomyśleć, że druhny, które zapomniały o oliwie, zignorowały pana młodego.

 

Ale sytuacja jest bardziej skomplikowana, ponieważ ta druga grupa kobiet miała głębokie pragnienie i wolę spotkania się ze swoim oblubieńcem. Z pewnością w ich postawie brakowało odpowiedniego i żarliwego przygotowania.

 

Patrząc na kobiety oczekujące na pana młodego, dochodzimy do punktu dotyczącego naszej relacji i duchowe zaangażowanie, które budujemy na naszych czynach.

 

Nie wystarczy mieć dobrą wolę i chęć spotkania z Bogiem. Potrzebujemy prawdziwej determinacji, aby budować naszą relację z Chrystusem.

Bóg mówi w Księdze Apokalipsy: „A tak, skoro jesteś letni i ani gorący, ani zimny, chcę cię wyrzucić z mych ust".  Ap 3.16.

 

Te 5 kobiet reprezentuje drogę ludzi letnich. Chcą mieć Boga w sercu, ale robią niewielu, aby to osiągnąć. To obraz ludzi traktujących wiarę jedynie jako tradycję bez większego znaczenia.

 

Jezus mówi, że to jest czas na podjęcie decyzji. Po której stronie chcesz pozostać, po stronie Boga czy po stronie Jego wroga?

 

Bóg oczekuje jasnej decyzji, jaką stronę chcemy wybrać? Jeśli pragniemy być wierni, potrzebujemy dużo wysiłku i pracy, jak te rozsądne kobiety, które były całkowicie przygotowane na przyjście pana młodego i dały dowód własnej wiary.

 

Czyńmy to samo, dawajmy dowód, że naprawdę zależy nam na Bogu. Amen.
