The Talents... Talenty...

 

Matthew 25:14-30

You have been faithful in small things: come and join in your master's happiness

Jesus spoke this parable to his disciples: ‘The kingdom of Heaven is like a man on his way abroad who summoned his servants and entrusted his property to them. To one he gave five talents, to another two, to a third one; each in proportion to his ability. Then he set out.

  ‘The man who had received the five talents promptly went and traded with them and made five more. The man who had received two made two more in the same way. But the man who had received one went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.

  ‘Now a long time after, the master of those servants came back and went through his accounts with them. The man who had received the five talents came forward bringing five more. “Sir,” he said “you entrusted me with five talents; here are five more that I have made.”

  ‘His master said to him, “Well done, good and faithful servant; you have shown you can be faithful in small things, I will trust you with greater; come and join in your master’s happiness.”

  ‘Next the man with the two talents came forward. “Sir,” he said “you entrusted me with two talents; here are two more that I have made.” His master said to him, “Well done, good and faithful servant; you have shown you can be faithful in small things, I will trust you with greater; come and join in your master’s happiness.”

  ‘Last came forward the man who had the one talent. “Sir,” said he “I had heard you were a hard man, reaping where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered; so I was afraid, and I went off and hid your talent in the ground. Here it is; it was yours, you have it back.” But his master answered him, “You wicked and lazy servant! So you knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered? Well then, you should have deposited my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have recovered my capital with interest. So now, take the talent from him and give it to the man who has the five talents. For to everyone who has will be given more, and he will have more than enough; but from the man who has not, even what he has will be taken away. As for this good-for-nothing servant, throw him out into the dark, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.”

    The Book of Revelation of the New Testament gives us the words of the Lord, who says: “I am the Alpha and Omega”. The two extreme litters of the Greek alphabet mean that Jesus Christ is the beginning and the end of every creation.  Everything what is on earth, was called to existence by God. 

 

The Gospel of Matthew and the Parable about the Owner who divided his money between the servants turns our sight to God, who created this world, and gave every human being some the essential attributes, of which the first is life. Our existence is based on His love and freedom. The biggest proof of God’s love and freedom is a man who was called to life by His Creator. 

 

God showed His power and marvellous glory in humanity. We are the clearest image of the Creator and we are the evidence of His almightiness.

 

Apart from that, the Gospel and the Parable indicate one more thing. The Lord bestows us with immortal and rational soul, but the money from the parable describes that our abilities were distributed in many different ways. 

 

Our life is not monotonic. Having read the Gospel, we may notice that the owner gave the money to achieve some profit. The servants had to multiply what belonged of their lord. The first and the second of them understood properly the order of the owner, but the third one wanted to keep money for himself. And he became the negative example from the today’s Gospel. 

 

This is a warning about egoistic and selfish attitude. Of course, God gives us some gifts to build the proper sense of self-esteem and positive glory, which are important, but He calls us to share it with our neighbours for the common good and development of our community, city, village and country and the parish. This is not un utopia and a new ideology, but the normal society’s function. 

 

God call us to share our gifts with others, as the Latin proverb says: At Majoram Dei Gloriam”, “For the bigger glory of God”. 

Let us multiple our abilities, as the first and the second servant did, for the Glory of God and everyone else. Amen.

Jezus opowiedział swoim uczniom tę przypowieść: „Pewien człowiek, mając się udać w podróż, przywołał swoje sługi i przekazał im swój majątek. Jednemu dał pięć talentów, drugiemu dwa, trzeciemu jeden, każdemu według jego zdolności, i odjechał. Zaraz ten, który otrzymał pięć talentów, poszedł, puścił je w obrót i zyskał drugie pięć. Tak samo i ten, który dwa otrzymał; on również zyskał drugie dwa. Ten zaś, który otrzymał jeden, poszedł i rozkopawszy ziemię, ukrył pieniądze swego pana. Po dłuższym czasie powrócił pan owych sług i zaczął rozliczać się z nimi. Wówczas przyszedł ten, który otrzymał pięć talentów. Przyniósł drugie pięć i rzekł: "Panie, przekazałeś mi pięć talentów, oto drugie pięć talentów zyskałem". Rzekł mu pan: "Dobrze, sługo dobry i wierny. Byłeś wierny w niewielu rzeczach, nad wieloma cię postawię: wejdź do radości twego pana". Przyszedł również i ten, który otrzymał dwa talenty, mówiąc: "Panie, przekazałeś mi dwa talenty, oto drugie dwa talenty zyskałem". Rzekł mu pan: "Dobrze, sługo dobry i wierny. Byłeś wierny w niewielu rzeczach, nad wieloma cię postawię; wejdź do radości twego pana". Przyszedł i ten, który otrzymał jeden talent, i rzekł: "Panie, wiedziałem, żeś jest człowiek twardy: chcesz żąć tam, gdzie nie posiałeś, i zbierać tam, gdzieś nie rozsypał. Bojąc się więc, poszedłem i ukryłem twój talent w ziemi. Oto masz swoją własność". Odrzekł mu pan jego: "Sługo zły i gnuśny! Wiedziałeś, że chcę żąć tam, gdzie nie posiałem, i zbierać tam, gdziem nie rozsypał. Powinieneś więc był oddać moje pieniądze bankierom, a ja po powrocie byłbym z zyskiem odebrał swoją własność. Dlatego odbierzcie mu ten talent, a dajcie temu, który ma dziesięć talentów. Każdemu bowiem, kto ma, będzie dodane, tak że nadmiar mieć będzie. Temu zaś, kto nie ma, zabiorą nawet to, co ma. A sługę nieużytecznego wyrzućcie na zewnątrz w ciemności; tam będzie płacz i zgrzytanie zębów”.

Księga Apokalipsy Nowego Testamentu podaje nam słowa Pana, który mówi: „Ja jestem Alfą i Omegą”. Dwa skrajne litery alfabetu greckiego oznaczają, że Jezus Chrystus jest początkiem i końcem wszelkiego stworzenia. Wszystko, co jest na ziemi, zostało powołane do istnienia przez Boga.

Ewangelia Mateusza podaje nam przypowieść o właścicielu, który podzielił swoje pieniądze pomiędzy sługi. Lektura Pisma Świętego kieruję nasze oczy na Boga, który stworzył ten świat i dał każdemu człowiekowi pewne istotne przymioty, z których pierwszym jest życie. Nasze istnienie opiera się na Jego miłości i wolności. Największym dowodem Bożej miłości i wolności jest człowiek powołany do życia przez swego Stwórcę.

 

    Bóg ukazał swoją moc i cudowną chwałę w ludzkości. Jesteśmy najjaśniejszym obrazem Stwórcy i dowodem Jego wszechmocy.

 

Poza tym Ewangelia i przypowieść wskazują nam na jeszcze jedną rzecz. Pan obdarza nas nieśmiertelną i rozumną duszą, a pieniądze z przypowieści, określają nasze zdolności, które zostały rozdzielone na wiele różnych sposobów.

 

Nasze życie nie jest monotonne. Czytając Ewangelię, możemy zauważyć, że właściciel oddał pieniądze, aby osiągnąć jakiś zysk. Słudzy musieli pomnażać to, co należało do ich pana. Pierwszy i drugi z nich dobrze zrozumieli polecenie właściciela, natomiast trzeci chciał zatrzymać pieniądze dla siebie, stając się negatywnym przykładem z dzisiejszej Ewangelii.

 

Jest to ostrzeżenie przed egoistyczną postawą. Oczywiście Bóg daje nam pewne dary budujące właściwe poczucie własnej wartości i pozytywnej chwały, które są ważne, ale wzywa nas, abyśmy dzielili się nimi z bliźnimi dla wspólnego dobra i rozwoju naszej społeczności, miasta, wsi i kraju i parafii. To nie jest utopia i nowa ideologia, ale normalna funkcja społeczeństwa.

Bóg wzywa nas do dzielenia się naszymi darami z innymi, jak mówi łacińskie przysłowie: At Majoram Dei Gloriam, „Na większą chwałę Bożą”.

Pomnażajmy nasze zdolności, jak to uczynili pierwszy i drugi sługa, na chwałę Boga i wszystkich ludzi. Amen.
