Matthew 16:21-27

'Get behind me, Satan!'

Jesus began to make it clear to his disciples that he was destined to go to Jerusalem and suffer grievously at the hands of the elders and chief priests and scribes, to be put to death and to be raised up on the third day. Then, taking him aside, Peter started to remonstrate with him. ‘Heaven preserve you, Lord;’ he said ‘this must not happen to you.’ But he turned and said to Peter, ‘Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle in my path, because the way you think is not God’s way but man’s.’

  Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him renounce himself and take up his cross and follow me. For anyone who wants to save his life will lose it; but anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it. What, then, will a man gain if he wins the whole world and ruins his life? Or what has a man to offer in exchange for his life?

  ‘For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and, when he does, he will reward each one according to his behaviour.

   Whilst the reading of the today’s Gospel, before of our sight has appeared the talk and situation full of determination, while Jesus foretold his Passion and Death. His destination was to redeem people by suffering and cross. 

 

This plan, Peter was unable to understand, who said to Christ; “Heaven preserve you Lord”. Certainly, he did it, not because of his care for Jesus, but Peter had own plan for his life and the life of Christ, full of stability and splendor.    

 

What did Jesus say to Peter? “Get behind me Satan”. He’s just told Peter off. It was more painful for him, because couple minutes before the same Jesus had said to him, you are the Rock, and upon this Rock I will build my Church. 

 

Why does Jesus react? Peter wanted to impose condition to Jesus and enforce him to accommodate his future according to Peter’s expectations. 

 

And now we are going to the point and core of the today’s Gospel. A man in the person of Peter is plenty of temptation and desire to put to the test of Jesus, imposing his own conditions to him.

 

What do I mean? We can hear so often the same excuse and order, that the world is changing, the mentality, ideology and the case of life have been transformed and necessarily we must go with “the spirit of this world”, to be modern and ready to overcome the challenges of this time. 

 

So often a man is saying, it’s time for God and his Church, because these of the two have to change the face and relationship to this world. So many things have been changed, and God and the Church have become one of the last bastions of obscurantism and unchanging values. 

Even though, Catholics for their private and timeless needs want to put Go to the test, saying; it has to be reviled by the time and prevailing conditions. 

 

But this attitude of Peter and many of us is the dictation of our conditions to God. Don’t we create our own imagination of Christ according our thoughts? 

 

Unfortunately, some people do this for their particular business. But God is the principle of all laws, and he never agrees to take his place by man. 

 

He gives a lot of signs, that he is the Creator and Founder of this world, and many things are out of our control, even this latest time shows us, the man has no influence on his life and fate to the end. There is a Latin sentence; the world revolves around its axis, but the Cross of Jesus is still at the same place. 

 

 

May this Gospel make us aware, that Jesus Christ the Son of God, and he has fulness of wisdom and timeless plan for us. Amen.  

 

(Mt 16, 21-27) 
Jezus zaczął wskazywać swoim uczniom na to, że musi udać się do Jerozolimy i wiele wycierpieć od starszych i arcykapłanów oraz uczonych w Piśmie; że będzie zabity i trzeciego dnia zmartwychwstanie. A Piotr wziął Go na bok i począł robić Mu wyrzuty: "Panie, niech Cię Bóg broni! Nie przyjdzie to nigdy na Ciebie". Lecz On odwrócił się i rzekł do Piotra: "Zejdź Mi z oczu, szatanie! Jesteś Mi zawadą, bo nie myślisz po Bożemu, lecz po ludzku". Wtedy Jezus rzekł do swoich uczniów: "Jeśli ktoś chce pójść za Mną, niech się zaprze samego siebie, niech weźmie krzyż swój i niech Mnie naśladuje. Bo kto chce zachować swoje życie, straci je; a kto straci swe życie z mego powodu, znajdzie je. Cóż bowiem za korzyść odniesie człowiek, choćby cały świat zyskał, a na swej duszy szkodę poniósł? Albo co da człowiek w zamian za swoją duszę? Albowiem Syn Człowieczy przyjdzie w chwale Ojca swego razem z aniołami swoimi i wtedy odda każdemu według jego postępowania".

  Czytając dzisiejszą Ewangelię naszym oczom ukazała się pełna determinacji rozmowa i sytuacja, w której Jezus zapowiedział swoją mękę i śmierć. Jego celem było odkupienie ludzi przez cierpienie i krzyż.

 

Planu tego nie mógł zrozumieć Piotr, który powiedział Chrystusowi; „Panie, niech Cię Bóg broni”. Z pewnością uczynił to nie ze względu na troskę o Jezusa, ale Piotr miał własny plan na swoje życie i życie Chrystusa, pełne stałości i świetności.

 

Co Jezus powiedział Piotrowi? „Zejdź mi z oczu, szatanie”. Skarcił Piotra. Było to dla niego bardziej bolesne, ponieważ kilka minut wcześniej ten sam Jezus mu powiedział: Ty jesteś Skałą i na tej Skale zbuduję mój Kościół.

 

Dlaczego Jezus tak reaguje? Piotr chciał narzucić Jezusowi własny plan i zmusić go do przystosowania swojej przyszłości zgodnie z oczekiwaniami Piotra.

 

Człowiek w osobie Piotra jest pełen pokus i pragnień wystawienia Jezusa na próbę, narzucając mu własne warunki.

 

Co mam na myśli? Często słyszymy tę samą wymówkę i argument, że świat się zmienia, mentalność, ideologia i sposób życia uległy przemianie i koniecznie trzeba iść za „duchem tego świata”, aby być nowoczesnym i gotowym do poddania się wyzwania tego czasu.

 

Często człowiek mówi, że już czas na Boga i Jego Kościół, którzy muszą zmienić oblicze i stosunek do tego świata. Tak wiele rzeczy uległo zmianie, a Bóg i Kościół stali się jednym z ostatnich bastionów stałości i niezmiennych wartości, trzeba to zmienić ze względu na czas i panujące warunki.

 

Taka postawa Piotra i wielu z nas jest dyktowaniem naszych warunków Bogu. Czy nie tworzymy własnej wyobraźni Chrystusa według naszych myśli?

 

Niestety, niektórzy ludzie robią to w ramach swojej konkretnej działalności. Ale to Bóg jest zasadą wszystkich praw i  On nigdy nie zgadza na zajęcie jego miejsca przez człowieka.

 

Daje wiele znaków, że jest Stwórcą i Założycielem tego świata, a człowiek nie ma wpływu na wiele rzeczy, nawet ten ostatni czas nam pokazuje, że człowiek nie ma wpływu na swoje życie i los do końca. Łacińskie zdanie podaje niezmiennąprawdę; świat kręci się wokół własnej osi, ale Krzyż Jezusa wciąż jest w tym samym miejscu.

 

 

Niech ta Ewangelia uświadomi nam, że Jezus Chrystus, Syn Boży, ma dla nas pełnię mądrości i ponadczasowy plan. Amen.
