Luke 12:13-21

Fool! This very night your soul will be demanded of you

A man in the crowd said to Jesus, ‘Master, tell my brother to give me a share of our inheritance.’ ‘My friend,’ he replied, ‘who appointed me your judge, or the arbitrator of your claims?’ Then he said to them, ‘Watch, and be on your guard against avarice of any kind, for a man’s life is not made secure by what he owns, even when he has more than he needs.’

  Then he told them a parable: ‘There was once a rich man who, having had a good harvest from his land, thought to himself, “What am I to do? I have not enough room to store my crops.” Then he said, “This is what I will do: I will pull down my barns and build bigger ones, and store all my grain and my goods in them, and I will say to my soul: My soul, you have plenty of good things laid by for many years to come; take things easy, eat, drink, have a good time.” But God said to him, “Fool! This very night the demand will be made for your soul; and this hoard of yours, whose will it be then?” So it is when a man stores up treasure for himself in place of making himself rich in the sight of God.’

   On the XVIII Sunday of Ordinary Time, Jesus tells us another parable about the rich man. The Gospel is focused on the topic of importance and not falling into a spiritual trap, which is pride. The man thought: I have everything – money, properties, food. Now it’s time to use it, I can ignore God and other people. This attitude shows no respect and illness of his soul. Lack of understanding.

 

The answer of God and the author of the parable is very clear: Foolish man, during this night your soul may be taken from you and your money cannot help you. 

 

The words of God have become a warning for us. We should focus on our faith and humanity, not money and pride.

 

This is so often the main temptation for us, which touches many people; I am a good person, that’s it, I don’t have to do anything more.

Faith and humanity are something dynamic, not constant, we need formation of our soul.

 

I remember that my superiors used to tell us: first, you must be good men, later Christians, and afterwards good priests. All the things need development. It impresses me that many saints and beatitudes were concerned about their imperfection and the need of Christian formation, because they saw the perfection of God clearly and that experience made them aware; we need work more on ourselves. 

 

Spiritual pride also becomes danger. We may have seen it in some priest. One of my teachers was a very intelligent priest (I mentioned him before). He got great knowledge about faith and theology. He was attending symposia in Europe, he belonged to the International Collegium of Theology in Vatican. He had everything –splendor, popularity, and esteem. 

 

But one thing was not right. His faith and relationship with God. He knew a lot about Jesus, but he was losing the living faith and relationship, maybe like the man from the Gospel, he thought: I have everything, now I am fulfilled.

 

It was a shock for us that the man resigned from the priesthood and left the Catholic Church. Today, he is an atheist, using his intelligence against the Church and undermining the dogma and teaching of God. 

 

In the Old Testament of the Proverbs says: “Pride goes before disaster, and a haughty spirit before a fall”. 16,18. 

 

We need to be humble before God and search for his help in our Christian formation. This is for our good sake. Amen.

Ktoś z tłumu rzekł do Jezusa: "Nauczycielu, powiedz mojemu bratu, żeby się podzielił ze mną spadkiem". Lecz On mu odpowiedział: "Człowieku, któż Mnie ustanowił nad wami sędzią albo rozjemcą?" Powiedział też do nich: "Uważajcie i strzeżcie się wszelkiej chciwości, bo nawet gdy ktoś ma wszystkiego w nadmiarze, to życie jego nie zależy od jego mienia". I opowiedział im przypowieść: "Pewnemu zamożnemu człowiekowi dobrze obrodziło pole. I rozważał w sobie: „Co tu począć? Nie mam gdzie pomieścić moich zbiorów”. I rzekł: „Tak zrobię: zburzę moje spichlerze, a pobuduję większe i tam zgromadzę całe moje zboże i dobra. I powiem sobie: Masz wielkie dobra, na długie lata złożone; odpoczywaj, jedz, pij i używaj!” Lecz Bóg rzekł do niego: „Głupcze, jeszcze tej nocy zażądają twojej duszy od ciebie; komu więc przypadnie to, co przygotowałeś?" Tak dzieje się z każdym, kto skarby gromadzi dla siebie, a nie jest bogaty u Boga".

   W XVIII Niedzielę Zwykłą Jezus przytacza kolejną przypowieść o bogaczu. Głównym tematem Ewangelii jest to, by nie wpaść w pułapkę duchowej pułapki, jaką jest pycha. Mężczyzna myślał; Mam wszystko, pieniądze, nieruchomości, jedzenie. Teraz nadszedł czas, aby go użyć, ignorując Boga i kogokolwiek. Ta postawa wykazuje brak szacunku i chorobę duszy oraz braku zrozumienia; jestem tylko człowiekiem.

 

Odpowiedź Boga i autora przypowieści jest bardzo jasna: Głupi człowieku, tej nocy dusza twoja może być Ci odebrana, a twoje bogactwo nie może Ci pomóc.

 

Słowa Boga stają się dla nas ostrzeżeniem, abyśmy nie budowali ludzkiej i duchowej dumy, oraz pewność, że osiągnąłem najwyższy poziom mojej wiary i człowieczeństwa.

 

Tak często jest to nasza główna pokusa, która dotyka wielu; jestem dobrą osobą, to wszystko, nie muszę więcej pracować na swoim codziennym życiu.

Wiara i człowieczeństwo są czymś dynamicznym, a nie stałym, potrzebuję formacji mojego człowieczeństwa.

 

Pamiętam, jak powtarzali nam moi przełożeni: najpierw musisz być dobrym człowiekiem, później chrześcijaninem, a potem dobrym księdzem. Wszystkie rzeczy potrzebują rozwoju. Co mi imponuje, to postawa świętych i błogosławieństw. Byli zaniepokojeni swoją niedoskonałością i potrzebą formacji chrześcijańskiej, ponieważ widzieli doskonałość Boga i to doświadczenie uświadomiło im; potrzebuję więcej pracy nad sobą.

 

Zachowanie duchowej dumy staje się niebezpieczeństwem, co mogłem zauważyć jako kapłan. Jeden z moich profesorów, był bardzo inteligentnym księdzem (wspominałem o nim wam), posiadającym wielką wiedzę na temat wiary i teologii. Był zapraszany na sympozja w Europie, należał do Międzynarodowego Kolegium Teologicznego w Rzymie, w Watykanie. Miał wszystko, splendor, popularność i szacunek.

 

Jedna rzecz słabła w jego życiu, wiara i relacja z Bogiem. Dużo wie o Jezusie, ale tracił żywą wiarę i relację. Może jak człowiek z Ewangelii myślał, mam wszystko, teraz się spełniłem.

 

To był dla nas szok, że ten człowiek zrezygnował z kapłaństwa i opuścił Kościół katolicki. Dzisiaj jest niewierzący, wykorzystując swoją inteligencję przeciwko Kościołowi, podważając dogmaty i naukę Boga.

 

 

W Starym Testamencie Przysłów znajdujemy słowa: „Przed porażką - wyniosłość, 
duch pyszny poprzedza upadek”. 16,18.

 

Musimy być pokorni przed Bogiem, szukając Jego pomocy w mojej chrześcijańskiej formacji. To dla naszego dobra. Amen.
