Luke 5:1-11

They left everything and followed him

Jesus was standing one day by the Lake of Gennesaret, with the crowd pressing round him listening to the word of God, when he caught sight of two boats close to the bank. The fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats – it was Simon’s – and asked him to put out a little from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat.

  When he had finished speaking he said to Simon, ‘Put out into deep water and pay out your nets for a catch.’ ‘Master,’ Simon replied, ‘we worked hard all night long and caught nothing, but if you say so, I will pay out the nets.’ And when they had done this they netted such a huge number of fish that their nets began to tear, so they signalled to their companions in the other boat to come and help them; when these came, they filled the two boats to sinking point.

  When Simon Peter saw this he fell at the knees of Jesus saying, ‘Leave me, Lord; I am a sinful man.’ For he and all his companions were completely overcome by the catch they had made; so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were Simon’s partners. But Jesus said to Simon, ‘Do not be afraid; from now on it is men you will catch.’ Then, bringing their boats back to land, they left everything and followed him.

   Referring to the readings, on the V Sunday in the Ordinary Time, we stay with Jesus in the Galilean Country, by the shore of the Gennesaret Lake. Christ meets the fishermen there, who one of them is Simon, whose name was changed for Peter by the Lord himself. 

 

The whole situation, it seemed to many as normal, a lot of people were going to work, and the fishermen finished their duty. They were tired and disappointed, that they caught nothing this night.  The craft of fishing was the maintenance for them and the families. 

 

 

Suddenly, Christ, who was by the shore teaching people, said to Simon, try again and put out into the deep water your net. And the beginning Piotr was very reluctant, saying, Master it does not make sense, because we have nothing caught last night, but for you word, I try one more time. 

 

 

And this normal day was changed by an amazing situation, the great number of fishes were taken, a huge number, that the nets were breaking. 

 

What did Simon do, in the face of this situation? He said, Lord, go away from me because I am a sinner. The reply of Christ was so surprising, do not be afraid, from now, you will be the fisherman of people. 

 

The miracle of fishes was completely changed Simon, who kneeled before Jesus. He recognized God on that day. The look of Christ changed his heart and mind, and Simon Peter wanted to follow him, what he did, leaving his own companions and workers. The face of Jesus must have been full of love and joy, that man left everything and went with him. During this meeting between the Lord and Peter, the heart of that man was saying, follow him and give your consent to him to be his fisherman. 

 

 

And today, the same Christ comes to us, saying follow me, make your home in me and my love. 

Even you experience the same or similar dilemmas like Simon, you think, your life is so ordinary, without any spectacular accomplishment. And I have had a lot of failures, Jesus says, do not be afraid, follow me and I’ll make sense of your life. 

 

Jesus Christ looks at us with the same love, compassion, mercy. You are precious in the sight of mine, he says. I never refuse you, come with me, being my witness of faith, may your heart not be troubled but in peace. Amen.

Pewnego razu – gdy tłum cisnął się do Jezusa, aby słuchać słowa Bożego, a On stał nad jeziorem Genezaret – zobaczył dwie łodzie stojące przy brzegu; rybacy zaś wyszli z nich i płukali sieci. Wszedłszy do jednej łodzi, która należała do Szymona, poprosił go, żeby nieco odbił od brzegu. Potem usiadł i z łodzi nauczał tłumy. Gdy przestał mówić, rzekł do Szymona: "Wypłyń na głębię i zarzućcie sieci na połów!" A Szymon odpowiedział: "Mistrzu, całą noc pracowaliśmy i nic nie ułowiliśmy. Lecz na Twoje słowo zarzucę sieci". Skoro to uczynili, zagarnęli tak wielkie mnóstwo ryb, że sieci ich zaczynały się rwać. Skinęli więc na współtowarzyszy w drugiej łodzi, żeby im przyszli z pomocą. Ci podpłynęli; i napełnili obie łodzie, tak że się prawie zanurzały. Widząc to, Szymon Piotr przypadł Jezusowi do kolan i rzekł: "Wyjdź ode mnie, Panie, bo jestem człowiekiem grzesznym". I jego bowiem, i wszystkich jego towarzyszy w zdumienie wprawił połów ryb, jakiego dokonali; jak również Jakuba i Jana, synów Zebedeusza, którzy byli wspólnikami Szymona. A Jezus rzekł do Szymona: "Nie bój się, odtąd ludzi będziesz łowił". I wciągnąwszy łodzie na ląd, zostawili wszystko i poszli za Nim.

   Nawiązując do czytań, w V Niedzielę Zwykłą, nadal przebywamy z Jezusem w Kraju Galilejskim, nad brzegiem Jeziora Genezaret. Chrystus spotyka tam rybaków, wśród których jednym z nich jest Szymon, którego imię na Piotra zmienił sam Pan.

 

Cała sytuacja wydawała się dla wielu normalna, ludzie szli do pracy, a rybacy kończyli swój połów. Byli oni zmęczeni i rozczarowani, że tej nocy nic nie złowili. Rzemiosło rybackie było dla nich i rodzin jedynym utrzymaniem.

 

 

Nagle pojawia się Chrystus, który był przy brzegu nauczając ludzi, rzekł On do Szymona, zarzuć sieć jeszcze raz. Na początku Piotr był bardzo oporny, mówiąc: Mistrzu to nie ma sensu, bo nic nie złowiliśmy wczoraj wieczorem, ale na Twoje słowo, spróbuję jeszcze raz.

 

 

I ten niepozorny dzień zamienił się w niesamowitą sytuację, złowiono ogromną ilość ryb, tak dużą, że sieci pękały.

 

Co zrobił Szymon w obliczu tej sytuacji? Powiedział: Panie, odejdź ode mnie, bo jestem grzesznikiem. Odpowiedź Chrystusa była zaskakująca, nie bój się, od teraz będziesz rybakiem ludzi.

 

Cud ryb całkowicie odmienił Szymona, który uklęknął przed Jezusem. W tym dniu rozpoznał Boga. Spojrzenie Chrystusa zmieniło jego serce i umysł, a Szymon Piotr chciał iść za nim, co uczynił, pozostawiając własnych towarzyszy i pracowników. Twarz Jezusa musiała być pełna miłości i radości, że człowiek zostawił wszystko i poszedł z nim. Ta scena jest pokazana w filmie z Ameryki, zatytułowanym „Wybrany”, kiedy Piotr ujrzał twarz Chrystusa pełną miłosierdzia, współczucia i miłości. Podczas tego spotkania między Panem a Piotrem serce tego człowieka mówiło, pójdź za nim i zgódź się, aby być Jego rybakiem.

 

 

Dzisiaj ten sam Chrystus przychodzi do nas, mówiąc pójdź za mną, zanurz się w mojej miłości.

Nawet gdy doświadczasz takiego samego lub podobnego dylematu jak Szymon, myśląc, że twoje życie jest takie nudne, bez żadnych spektakularnych osiągnięć, miałem wiele porażek. Jezus mówi, nie bój się, chodź za mną, a Ja nadam sens Twojemu życiu.

 

Jezus Chrystus patrzy na nas z taką samą miłością, współczuciem, miłosierdziem i miłością jak na Piotra. Jesteś cenny w moich oczach, nigdy cię nie odrzucam, pójdź ze mną, będąc moim świadkiem wiary, aby twoje serce nie było niespokojne, ale pełne pokoju. Amen.
