Mark 10:35-45

The Son of Man came to give his life as a ransom for many

James and John, the sons of Zebedee, approached Jesus. ‘Master,’ they said to him ‘we want you to do us a favour.’ He said to them, ‘What is it you want me to do for you?’ They said to him, ‘Allow us to sit one at your right hand and the other at your left in your glory.’ ‘You do not know what you are asking’ Jesus said to them. ‘Can you drink the cup that I must drink, or be baptised with the baptism with which I must be baptised?’ They replied, ‘We can.’ Jesus said to them, ‘The cup that I must drink you shall drink, and with the baptism with which I must be baptised you shall be baptised, but as for seats at my right hand or my left, these are not mine to grant; they belong to those to whom they have been allotted.’

  When the other ten heard this they began to feel indignant with James and John, so Jesus called them to him and said to them, ‘You know that among the pagans their so-called rulers lord it over them, and their great men make their authority felt. This is not to happen among you. No; anyone who wants to become great among you must be your servant, and anyone who wants to be first among you must be slave to all. For the Son of Man himself did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’

 

   Today's Gospel according to Mark focuses on the topic of our daily life. Jesus Christ says that we should not be masters or lords. Instead of that we should be servants of our brothers and sisters. 

 

This is a difficult task because nowadays there is plenty of selfishness. The teaching of Christ has always been contradictory to modern life. It says that we need sacrifice.

 

Somebody said that Christianity is the religion of service and sacrifice. This is a very bitter truth, and foundation of our identity as members of the Church.

 

John and Jacob were tempted with great power and position but if you want to be great in the Kingdom of Heaven, you have to be a servant first.

 

While we are reading the today's Gospel, we may notice that modern society is ill because of selfishness and lack of sensitivity. 

    

Very often we believe that thanks to our human power we can do everything. We are often convinced that we poses the whole truth and all other people are wrong.

 

But everything what is human is limited.

 

Jesus Christ said to the Apostles, if you want to be great in my Kingdom, first you have to become a slave.

 

The Lord wakes up our sensitivity, so that we are able to share our life with other people.

 

We should remember that apart from sharing material goods we should also share our time, what is even more demanding. 

 

 

Often, we don’t notice other people, who are waiting only for one good word, a smile or a helpful hand. 

 

Sometimes, it is all about a little thing. A few days ago, I read on the internet some information regarding pope John Paul I. As we know, he was the bishop of Rome for 33 days and he died unexpectedly. A lot of people have remembered him as the pope of smile, his papacy was so short, but his attitude towards people has left a constant sign in the minds of many. There are some evidences, and even a healing through his intercession, which may lead to his beatification soon. 

 

Of course, sharing our time with others costs more than anything else, because we have to offer our time and privacy. 

 

Christianity never exits without sacrifice.

 

"Anyone who wants to become great among you must be your servant, and anyone who wants to be first among you must be slave to all. For the Son of Man himself did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’

 

(Mk 10, 35-45) 
Jakub i Jan, synowie Zebedeusza, podeszli do Jezusa i rzekli: "Nauczycielu, pragniemy, żebyś nam uczynił to, o co Cię poprosimy". On ich zapytał: "Co chcecie, żebym wam uczynił?" Rzekli Mu: "Daj nam, żebyśmy w Twojej chwale siedzieli jeden po prawej, a drugi po lewej Twej stronie". Jezus im odparł: "Nie wiecie, o co prosicie. Czy możecie pić kielich, który Ja mam pić, albo przyjąć chrzest, którym Ja mam być ochrzczony?" Odpowiedzieli Mu: "Możemy". Lecz Jezus rzekł do nich: "Kielich, który Ja mam pić, wprawdzie pić będziecie; i chrzest, który Ja mam przyjąć, wy również przyjmiecie. Nie do Mnie jednak należy dać miejsce po mojej stronie prawej lub lewej, ale dostanie się ono tym, dla których zostało przygotowane". Gdy usłyszało to dziesięciu pozostałych, poczęli oburzać się na Jakuba i Jana. A Jezus przywołał ich do siebie i rzekł do nich: "Wiecie, że ci, którzy uchodzą za władców narodów, uciskają je, a ich wielcy dają im odczuć swą władzę. Nie tak będzie między wami. Lecz kto by między wami chciał się stać wielkim, niech będzie sługą waszym. A kto by chciał być pierwszym między wami, niech będzie niewolnikiem wszystkich. Bo i Syn Człowieczy nie przyszedł, aby mu służono, lecz żeby służyć i dać swoje życie jako okup za wielu".

Dzisiejsza Ewangelia według Marka skupia się na temacie naszego codziennego życia. Jezus Chrystus mówi, że nie powinniśmy być Mistrzami ani Panami dla siebie samych. Zamiast tego powinniśmy być sługami naszych braci i sióstr.

To trudne zadanie, ponieważ w dzisiejszych czasach jest dużo egoizmu. Nauka Chrystusa zawsze była sprzeczna ze współczesnym życiem, mówiąca o potrzebie poświęcenia.

Ktoś powiedział, że chrześcijaństwo jest religią służby i poświęcenia. To bardzo trudna prawda i fundament naszej tożsamości jako członków Kościoła.

Jan i Jakub byli kuszeni wielką mocą i pozycją, lecz Jezus mówi,  jeśli chcesz być wielkim w Królestwie Niebieskim, najpierw musisz być sługą.

Czytając dzisiejszą Ewangelię możemy zauważyć, że współczesne społeczeństwo choruje z powodu egoizmu i braku wrażliwości.

    

Bardzo często wierzymy, że dzięki naszej ludzkiej sile możemy zrobić wszystko. Często jesteśmy przekonani, że to my posiadamy całą prawdę, a wszyscy inni się mylą.

 

Niemniej wszystko, co ludzkie, jest ograniczone.

Jezus Chrystus powiedział Apostołom, jeśli chcecie być wielcy w moim Królestwie, najpierw musicie stać się sługami.

Pan budzi w nas wrażliwość, abyśmy mogli dzielić nasze życie z innymi ludźmi.

Pamiętajmy, że oprócz dzielenia się dobrami materialnymi powinniśmy także dzielić swój czas, co jest jeszcze bardziej wymagające.

Często nie zauważamy innych osób, które czekają tylko na jedno dobre słowo, uśmiech lub pomocną dłoń.

Czasami chodzi o drobiazg. Kilka dni temu przeczytałem w internecie przesłanie dotyczące papieża Jana Pawła I. Jak wiemy, był on biskupem Rzymu przez 33 dni, ponieważ nagle umarł . Wiele osób zapamiętało go jako Papieża uśmiechu, jego pontyfikat był tak krótki, ale jego postawa człowieka pozostawiła trwały ślad w umysłach wielu. Istnieją pewne dowody i uzdrowienie za jego wstawiennictwem, które może wkrótce doprowadzić do jego beatyfikacji.

Oczywiście dzielenie naszego czasu z innymi kosztuje więcej niż cokolwiek innego, ponieważ musimy zaoferować nasz czas i prywatność.

Chrześcijaństwo nigdy nie pozostaje bez ofiary.

„A kto by chciał być pierwszym między wami, niech będzie niewolnikiem wszystkich. Bo i Syn Człowieczy nie przyszedł, aby mu służono, lecz żeby służyć i dać swoje życie jako okup za wielu". Amen
