Matthew 10:26-33

Do not be afraid of those who kill the body

Jesus instructed the Twelve as follows: ‘Do not be afraid. For everything that is now covered will be uncovered, and everything now hidden will be made clear. What I say to you in the dark, tell in the daylight; what you hear in whispers, proclaim from the housetops.

  ‘Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; fear him rather who can destroy both body and soul in hell. Can you not buy two sparrows for a penny? And yet not one falls to the ground without your Father knowing. Why, every hair on your head has been counted. So there is no need to be afraid; you are worth more than hundreds of sparrows.

  ‘So if anyone declares himself for me in the presence of men, I will declare myself for him in the presence of my Father in heaven. But the one who disowns me in the presence of men, I will disown in the presence of my Father in heaven.’

   If we stop and think about our world, full of technology, innovations and development, we can also notice that it is very fragile when it comes to the condition of humanity and nature. Despite the fact that we are living in the XXI century and our life is more comfortable and stable than the life of people who lived before us, nowadays people are full of fear, social pressure and uncertainty when it comes to the future. 

Today, especially the people of the Western World, are living in constant stress and struggle for a better life, and at the same time they suffer from the lack of personal peace. One of the main problems is the conviction that everything depends on us and we must rely only on ourselves. It creates a lot of tensions, depression, addictions and because of it many people cannot function normally. They often need medical and psychological help. 

Unfortunately, many Christians think that even God has left them and they have to create their own life without Him, because he does not want to help them. People think that God does not listen to their prayers. 

A lot of people fall into this trap and repeat the mistake of deism which presents God as a watchmaker who gives a motion but he does not bother to care for the world. 

But the readings from this week confirm that God is not a person who pays no attention to us. He is the good Father who cares for every person.

The First Reading of Jeremiah shows that when the prophet was oppressed by his enemies and his life was in danger, he said: the Lord is my Stronghold, and my power is in Him, nothing is able to make me fear. He believed that God is his defender. 

In the Gospel of Matthew Jesus says: don’t be afraid of those who can kill your body. Even the hairs of your head all have been numbered. Fear not; you are more valuable than many sparrows. The words of Christ present the truth about God’s Providence. What the God’s Providence is about? It means that every single minute of human life is in the hands of God. The Heavenly Father sends his Angels to protect us. He protects us against evil. But the fundamental question is: Do we want to hear His voice? Am we able to cooperate with Him?

Jesus says that we should be afraid of one thing – the spiritual death, which can be caused by sins and disobedience to God and His commandments. Care for your soul. The rest leave to God. 

For the end, I want to share with you one story. When I was a deacon, someone offered me a small statue. It was the hand of God with a little child nestled in it. It was the symbol of God’s Providence. We are not alone, as Jesus said: I am with you to the end of this world. We are nestled into the hand of God, like that little child. 

Jesus Christ help me find the truth that you care for me, always. Amen.

Jezus powiedział do swoich apostołów: Nie bójcie się ludzi. Nie ma bowiem nic zakrytego, co by nie miało być wyjawione, ani nic tajemnego, o czym by się nie miano dowiedzieć. Co mówię wam w ciemności, powtarzajcie na świetle, a co słyszycie na ucho, rozgłaszajcie na dachach! Nie bójcie się tych, którzy zabijają ciało, lecz duszy zabić nie mogą. Bójcie się raczej Tego, który duszę i ciało może zatracić w piekle. Czyż nie sprzedają dwóch wróbli za asa? A przecież żaden z nich bez woli Ojca waszego nie spadnie na ziemię. U was zaś nawet włosy na głowie wszystkie są policzone. Dlatego nie bójcie się: jesteście ważniejsi niż wiele wróbli. Do każdego więc, który się przyzna do Mnie przed ludźmi, przyznam się i Ja przed moim Ojcem, który jest w niebie. Lecz kto się Mnie zaprze przed ludźmi, tego zaprę się i Ja przed moim Ojcem, który jest w niebie.

   Obserwując ten świat, pełen technologii, innowacji i rozwoju cywilizacji, zauważamy dużą kruchość ludzkiej kondycji i natury. Mimo, że żyjemy w XXI wieku, a nasze życie jest wygodniejsze i stabilniejsze od tych ludzi, którzy żyli przed nami, dziś człowiek jest pełen strachu, pod presją społeczną i niepewny swojej przyszłości.

Dzisiaj, zwłaszcza ludzie z Zachodu, żyją w ciągłym stresie i walczą o lepsze życie, jednocześnie cierpiąc z powodu braku wewnętrznego spokoju. Jednym z głównych problemów jest przekonanie o zagubieniu i myśl, że wszystko zależy ode mnie i muszę polegać tylko na sobie. Powoduje to wiele napięć, depresji, uzależnień. Wiele osób nie może normalnie funkcjonować, dlatego często potrzebuje pomocy medycznej i psychologicznej.

Niestety wielu chrześcijan uważa, że ​​nawet Bóg ich opuścił i muszą stworzyć własne życie bez Niego, ponieważ On nie chce im pomóc. Tą tezę potwierdza subiektywne odczucie, modlę się przez wiele lat i Bóg mnie nie słyszy.

W tę pułapkę wpada mnóstwo ludzi, powtarzając błąd deizmu, który przedstawia Boga jako wielkiego zegarmistrza, który dał ruch, ale „nie zawracał sobie głowy” dbaniem o świat. Patrzy na nas biernie.

Dzisiejsze czytania podważają tą fałszywą tezę, że Bóg jest bierny.  On jest dobrym Ojcem, który troszczy się o każdego człowieka, ale klucz zrozumienia tej sytuacji jest w naszych ręku. Czy ja interesuję się jego pomocą, czy nie.

Pierwsze czytanie Jeremiasza mówi o proroku w ucisku swoich wrogów. Jego życie jest w niebezpieczeństwie śmierci, ale on twierdzi: Pan jest moją Twierdzą, moją mocą, nic nie jest w stanie wywołać u mnie lęku. Wierzył, że Bóg jest jego obrońcą.

Ewangelia Mateusza i Jezus mówi: nie lękajcie się tych, którzy mogą zabić wasze ciało. Nawet twoje włosy są policzone. Jesteś ważniejszy niż wróbel. Słowa Chrystusa przedstawiają prawdę o Bożej Opatrzności. Co oznacza Boża Opatrzność?  Każda minuta ludzkiego życia jest w rękach Boga. Ojciec Niebieski posyła swoich aniołów, aby nas chronili. Jego głos w naszych sumienia chroni nas przed wszelkim złem. Lecz podstawowe pytanie brzmi: czy chcę usłyszeć jego głos i czy mogę z nim współpracować?

Jezus mówi: bójcie się jednej rzeczy, śmierci duchowej, która jest grzechem i nieposłuszeństwem Bogu i Jego przykazaniom. Dbaj o swoją duszę. Resztę pozostaw Bogu.

Kończąc homilię, chcę podzielić się jedną historią z wami. Kiedy byłem diakonem, ktoś podarował mi małą figurkę, rękę Boga i małe dziecko w tej dłoni. Ta statua jest symbolem Bożej Opatrzności. Nie jesteśmy sami, jak powiedział Jezus: jestem z wami do końca świata. Jesteśmy wtuleni w ręce Boga, jak to małe dziecko.

Jezu Chryste, pomóż mi znaleźć prawdę, że zawsze o mnie dbasz. Amen.
