John 14:1-12

I am the Way, the Truth and the Life

Jesus said to his disciples:

‘Do not let your hearts be troubled.

Trust in God still, and trust in me.

There are many rooms in my Father’s house;

if there were not, I should have told you.

I am going now to prepare a place for you,

and after I have gone and prepared you a place,

I shall return to take you with me;

so that where I am

you may be too.

You know the way to the place where I am going.’

Thomas said, ‘Lord, we do not know where you are going, so how can we know the way?’ Jesus said:

‘I am the Way, the Truth and the Life.

No one can come to the Father except through me.

If you know me, you know my Father too.

From this moment you know him and have seen him.’

Philip said, ‘Lord, let us see the Father and then we shall be satisfied.’ ‘Have I been with you all this time, Philip,’ said Jesus to him ‘and you still do not know me?

‘To have seen me is to have seen the Father,

so how can you say, “Let us see the Father”?

Do you not believe

that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?

The words I say to you I do not speak as from myself:

it is the Father, living in me, who is doing this work.

You must believe me when I say

that I am in the Father and the Father is in me;

believe it on the evidence of this work, if for no other reason.

I tell you most solemnly,

whoever believes in me

will perform the same works as I do myself,

he will perform even greater works,

because I am going to the Father.’

   The Gospel of John shows us a conversation between Jesus and the apostles. We can read the words that Christ gave to His disciples. His teaching and message are focused on the fact that Jesus is the Son of God. He was sent by God to bring us hope and joy. He says: I have come to fulfil the will of my Father, not mine.  The message of Jesus is very clear. His mission comes from the Father. His work has been legitimized by God.

While they were talking, Jesus said in response to the words of Thomas: “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life”. Let’s try look closer at this sentence. 

Jesus is the Way. Jesus is the Mediator between the Father and people. If we want to get to know God, we must look at Christ. We may say that Christ is the reflection of the Father. As He said, the Father and I, we are one. Philip asked Christ, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied. The response of the Master was very clear: who sees me, sees the Father.

Jesus also says that He is the Truth. The teaching of the Bible and centuries-old traditions of the Church say that the only Saviour and Redeemer is Jesus Christ. The reality is that Jesus was crucified, killed, buried, and on the third day he rose again. Only He redeems, nobody else. In His name we can find hope and salvation. He was anointed by God to bring the gift of freedom from sin and spiritual death. Saint Paul emphasises in his Letter to the Romans; our Redemption goes trough Jesus. And Saint Peter in the Acts of the Apostles is saying: “for all the names in the world, given to men, this is the only one by which we can be saved”. Act 4,12

Last but not least, Christ is the Life. What does it mean? It is linked and connected to the second definition of Jesus: the Truth. God gives us the real life, the one that is supernatural, in the sacrament of baptism. We may say that Christ gives us the real taste of life which goes beyond our human desires and expectations. 

Nowadays, we feel weakness in the face of the pandemic. Our methods to stop it failed or are not sufficient. So now, we turn our eyes to the Lord, believing He is able to help us survive this difficult time. Yes, He is the life which fills our hearts with hope and help. God gives us the real taste of life, which surpasses our earthly needs. His presence and existence are oriented to the Eternal Kingdom. 

You may have heard this sentence: “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life” many times.  God wants to repeat it once again. He wants to give us some guidelines. He is our hope, as the Way, the Truth and the Life. Amen.

Jezus powiedział do swoich uczniów: "Niech się nie trwoży serce wasze. Wierzycie w Boga? I we Mnie wierzcie. W domu Ojca mego jest mieszkań wiele. Gdyby tak nie było, to bym wam powiedział. Idę przecież przygotować wam miejsce. A gdy odejdę i przygotuję wam miejsce, przyjdę powtórnie i zabiorę was do siebie, abyście i wy byli tam, gdzie Ja jestem. Znacie drogę, dokąd Ja idę". Odezwał się do Niego Tomasz: "Panie, nie wiemy, dokąd idziesz. Jak więc możemy znać drogę?" Odpowiedział mu Jezus: "Ja jestem drogą i prawdą, i życiem. Nikt nie przychodzi do Ojca inaczej, jak tylko przeze Mnie. Gdybyście Mnie poznali, znalibyście i mojego Ojca. Ale teraz już Go znacie i zobaczyliście". Rzekł do Niego Filip: "Panie, pokaż nam Ojca, a to nam wystarczy". Odpowiedział mu Jezus: "Filipie, tak długo jestem z wami, a jeszcze Mnie nie poznałeś? Kto Mnie zobaczył, zobaczył także i Ojca. Dlaczego więc mówisz: Pokaż nam Ojca? Czy nie wierzysz, że Ja jestem w Ojcu, a Ojciec we Mnie? Słów tych, które wam mówię, nie wypowiadam od siebie. Ojciec, który trwa we Mnie, On sam dokonuje tych dzieł. Wierzcie Mi, że Ja jestem w Ojcu, a Ojciec we Mnie. Jeżeli zaś nie, wierzcie przynajmniej ze względu na same dzieła. Zaprawdę, zaprawdę powiadam wam: Kto we Mnie wierzy, będzie także dokonywał tych dzieł, których Ja dokonuję, owszem i większe od tych uczyni, bo Ja idę do Ojca".

Ewangelia Jana informuje nas o rozmowie Jezusa z Apostołami. Tych rozmów było wiele, pomiędzy Nim a uczniami. Jego nauczanie i przesłanie koncentrują się na prawdzie, że Jezus jest Synem Bożym. On został posłany przez Ojca, aby przynieść nadzieję i radość. Przyszedłem wypełnić wolę me go Ojca, a nie moją, mówi Chrystus. Przesłanie Jezusa jest bardzo jasne, misja Zbawienia nie pochodzi od Niego, ale od Ojca. Jego dzieło zostało utwierdzone przez Boga.

Podczas tej rozmowy Jezus odpowiada Tomasz; „Jestem Drogą, Prawdą i Życiem”. Zastanówmy się na tym zdaniem. 

Jezus jako Droga jest Pośrednikiem między Ojcem a ludem. Jeśli chcemy poznać Boga, musimy spojrzeć na Chrystusa. Osoba Jezusa reprezentuje wszystko, kim jest Bóg. Można powiedzieć, że Chrystus jest „Lustrem” Ojca.  Ojciec i Ja jedno jesteśmy. Filip poprosił Chrystusa, pokaż nam Ojca, a będziemy zadowoleni. Odpowiedź Mistrza jest bardzo jasna; kto mnie widzi, widzi Ojca.

Po drugie, Jezus mówi o sobie, że jest Prawdą. Nauczanie Biblii i wielowiekowa tradycja Kościoła mówią, że jedynym Zbawicielem i Odkupicielem jest Jezus Chrystus. W rzeczywistości Jezus został ukrzyżowany, zabity, pochowany, a trzeciego dnia zmartwychwstał. Tylko On odkupuje, nikt inny. W jego imieniu możemy znaleźć nadzieję i zbawienie. On został namaszczony przez Boga, aby przynieść dar wolności od grzechu i śmierci duchowej. Święty Paweł podkreśla w Liście do Rzymian; nasze Odkupienie przychodzi przez Jezusa. A Święty Piotr w Dziejach Apostolskich mówi: „ I nie ma w żadnym innym zbawienia, gdyż nie dano ludziom pod niebem żadnego innego imienia, w którym moglibyśmy być zbawieni”. Dz 14,12.

Po trzecie, Chrystus jest Życiem. Co to znaczy? Słowo „Życie” jest powiązane z drugą definicją o Jezusie; z Prawdą. Bóg daje nam prawdziwe życie, fizyczne i duchowe, zwane nadprzyrodzonym (dane w sakramencie chrztu). Można powiedzieć, że Chrystus daje nam prawdziwy smak życia, który wykracza poza nasze ludzkie pragnienia i oczekiwania. On ma pełnię życia.

W dzisiejszych czasach odczuwamy słabość w obliczu pandemii. Wszystkie możliwości ludzkie zawiodły lub są niewystarczające. Teraz zwracamy się do Pana, wierząc, że On jest w stanie pomóc nam przetrwać ten czas próby. Tak, On jest Życiem, które napełnia nasze serca pełnią nadziei. Bóg daje nam prawdziwy smak życia, które przewyższa nasze ziemskie potrzeby. Jego obecność i działalność są skierowane ku Wiecznemu Królestwu.

Być może wiele razy słyszeliśmy to zdanie: „Ja jestem Drogą, Prawdą i Życiem”. Bóg chce jeszcze raz powtórzyć to zdanie, On jest Waszą nadzieją jako Droga, Prawda i Życie
