John 17:1-11

Father, it is time for you to glorify me

Jesus raised his eyes to heaven and said:

‘Father, the hour has come:

glorify your Son

so that your Son may glorify you;

and, through the power over all mankind that you have given him,

let him give eternal life to all those you have entrusted to him.

And eternal life is this:

to know you,

the only true God,

and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.

I have glorified you on earth

and finished the work that you gave me to do.

Now, Father, it is time for you to glorify me

with that glory I had with you

before ever the world was.

I have made your name known

to the men you took from the world to give me.

They were yours and you gave them to me,

and they have kept your word.

Now at last they know

that all you have given me comes indeed from you;

for I have given them the teaching you gave to me,

and they have truly accepted this, that I came from you,

and have believed that it was you who sent me.

I pray for them;

I am not praying for the world

but for those you have given me,

because they belong to you:

all I have is yours

and all you have is mine,

and in them I am glorified.

I am not in the world any longer,

but they are in the world,

and I am coming to you.’

    Every day we are getting closer to the end of the Eastertide. The readings from this period prepare us for the Mystery of the Descent of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the gift of the Father that is renewed every year. And the culmination of it is the Celebration of The Pentecost Sunday, on the last Sunday of Easter.

The readings of this Sunday are inscribed into the expectation for the Holy Spirit. The first reading of the Acts of the Apostles reports that the Apostles, who were gathered in the Cenacle, were waiting for the gift from Heaven. They were waiting and praying. 

The Gospel of Luke presets us Jesus praying to His Father. The dialogue between Christ and God becomes the symbol of their unity. Jesus wants to say: me and my Father are one. The Son of God is the mirror of the heavenly Father.

We may notice that God gives us the truth about the necessity of prayer. Jesus encourages us to pray. Christian prayer is the breath of God in our life. But what our prayer is about? 

We say that prayer is a spiritual bridge connecting us with God. Using different words, it is our way to talk to Him. Yes, it true. But it is also something more. Our personal and public prayer is a meeting with God. Jesus spent a lot of hours on talking to His Father. He was always close to Him. 

I know that prayer can become difficult. Our daily prayer carries many hassles and obstacles. Sometimes Sunday Mass turns into a routine, and the meeting with God is not fascinating. Our conversation with God becomes only a part of our tradition. It is an easy way to the neglection of spiritual life.  

Here comes the question, whether our prayers, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, Sunday’s Eucharist and other sacraments make sense?

I remember a story about one priest. He had some doubts whether it was worth to stand before God. To talk to Him, even when he was tired, sleepy and out of energy. The same priest confessed those doubts and asked his spiritual director whether it makes any sense to pray when you are tired and the prayers don’t make you happy. But the wise priest said: yes, it makes sense, because your meeting with God is like sunbathing on a beach. You do nothing, only lay on sand, but the sun tans you. The same applies to your prayers, even if your are tired, you should meet with the Lord. Do not worry about your condition. God works in your life, even when you are not aware of it.

I think that this story dispels any doubts. Our prayers always make sense, because it is not our strength that changes us, but God’s grace and presence. 

God, come with your aid to our prayers. Amen.

J 17,1-11

To powiedział Jezus, a podniósłszy oczy ku niebu, rzekł: «Ojcze, nadeszła godzina. Otocz swego Syna chwałą, aby Syn Ciebie nią otoczył  i aby mocą władzy udzielonej Mu przez Ciebie nad każdym człowiekiem dał życie wieczne wszystkim tym, których Mu dałeś.  A to jest życie wieczne: aby znali Ciebie, jedynego prawdziwego Boga, oraz Tego, którego posłałeś, Jezusa Chrystusa. Ja Ciebie otoczyłem chwałą na ziemi przez to, że wypełniłem dzieło, które Mi dałeś do wykonania.  A teraz Ty, Ojcze, otocz Mnie u siebie tą chwałą, którą miałem u Ciebie pierwej, zanim świat powstał. 

 Objawiłem imię Twoje ludziom, których Mi dałeś ze świata. Twoimi byli i Ty Mi ich dałeś, a oni zachowali słowo Twoje.  Teraz poznali, że wszystko, cokolwiek Mi dałeś, pochodzi od Ciebie. Słowa bowiem, które Mi powierzyłeś, im przekazałem, a oni je przyjęli i prawdziwie poznali, że od Ciebie wyszedłem, oraz uwierzyli, żeś Ty Mnie posłał.  Ja za nimi proszę, nie proszę za światem, ale za tymi, których Mi dałeś, ponieważ są Twoimi.  Wszystko bowiem moje jest Twoje, a Twoje jest moje, i w nich zostałem otoczony chwałą.  Już nie jestem na świecie, ale oni są jeszcze na świecie, a Ja idę do Ciebie. Ojcze Święty, zachowaj ich w Twoim imieniu, które Mi dałeś, aby tak jak My stanowili jedno. 

   Każdego dnia zbliżamy się do końca Wielkanocy, czytania tego dnia przygotowują nas do Tajemnicy Zstąpienia Ducha Świętego. Zgodnie z obietnicą Jezusa, dar Ojca jest przekazywany Kościołowi. Kulminacją tego wydarzenia  jest Święto Niedzieli Zesłania Ducha Świętego, w ostatnią Niedzielę Wielkanocy.

Czytania tej Niedzieli wpisane są w oczekiwanie na Ducha Świętego. Pierwsze czytanie Dziejów Apostolskich mówi  o Apostołach, którzy byli zgromadzeni w Wieczerniku, oczekującDaru z Nieba, Ducha Świętego. Oni trwają na modlitwie.

Ewangelia Łukasza ukazuje Jezusa modlącego się do Ojca. Dialog między Chrystusem a Bogiem staje się jednością obu Osób. Jezus chce powiedzieć: Ja i mój Ojciec jesteśmy jedno. 

Możemy zauważyć sięgając po czytania, że Bóg przekazuje nam prawdę o konieczności modlitwy. Syn Boży modli się i zachęca nas do tego samego. Modlitwa chrześcijańska jest tchnieniem Boga w naszym życiu. 

O co chodzi w naszej modlitwie?

Od początku naszego religijnego wychowania mówimy, że modlitwa jest duchowym pomostem łączącym nas z Bogiem. Mówiąc inaczej, jest to rozmowa z nim. Tak, to prawda. Ale to coś więcej, moja osobista i publiczna modlitwa dokonuje się w obecności Boga. Jezus ofiarował wiele godzin na rozmowę ze swoim Ojcem, stajać w Jego obecności. 

Ta katechizmowa prawda staje się trudna, gdy nasza codzienna modlitwa niesie wiele trudności i przeszkód. Niedzielna Msza św. zmienia się w rutynę, spotkanie z Bogiem nie jest fascynujące. Nasza rozmowa z Bogiem staje się nie tylko tradycją, ale i prowadzi do zniechęcenia. To prosty sposób do zaniedbanie życia duchowego.

Pojawia się pytanie, czy moją modlitwę, adoracja Najświętszego Sakramentu, NiedzielnaEucharystia i inne sakramenty mają sens?

Pamiętam historię  jednego księdza. Miał on wątpliwości, czy warto modlić do Bogiem, pozostając zmęczonym, śpiącym i pozbawionym energii. Ten sam ksiądz poszedł do spowiedzi z tymi wątpliwościami w swoim sercu i zapytał swojego kierownika duchowego, czy modlitwa jest sensowna, gdy jesteś zmęczony, a modlitwy nie sprawiają  radości. Ale mądry kapłan powiedział: tak, to ma sens, ponieważ spotkanie z Bogiem przypomina opalanie się na plaży. Nic nie robisz, tylko leżysz na piasku, a słońce Cię opala. To samo dotyczy twoich modlitw, nawet jeśli jesteś zmęczony, powinieneś spotkać się z Panem.  Bóg działa w twoim życiu, nawet jeśli nie jesteś do końca tego świadomy.

Myślę, że ta historia, prawdziwa historia rozwiewa wszelkie wątpliwości. W każdej chwili moja modlitwa ma sens, ponieważ nie moja siła mnie zmienia, ale łaska i obecność Boga.

Boże, przyjdź z pomocą mojej modlitwy. Amen.
