John 1:35-42

'We have found the Messiah'

As John stood with two of his disciples, Jesus passed, and John stared hard at him and said, ‘Look, there is the lamb of God.’ Hearing this, the two disciples followed Jesus. Jesus turned round, saw them following and said, ‘What do you want?’ They answered, ‘Rabbi,’ – which means Teacher – ‘where do you live?’ ‘Come and see’ he replied; so they went and saw where he lived, and stayed with him the rest of that day. It was about the tenth hour.

  One of these two who became followers of Jesus after hearing what John had said was Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter. Early next morning, Andrew met his brother and said to him, ‘We have found the Messiah’ – which means the Christ – and he took Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked hard at him and said, ‘You are Simon son of John; you are to be called Cephas’ – meaning Rock.

    Last week, we started the first part of the Ordinary Time. That season does not give us a particular mystery to meditate, but the Church indicates the whole concept of the Saviour’s life, which is in fully immerged into His love and dedication to us. 

 

While reading the today’s Gospel of John, we are the witnesses of a meeting between John the Baptist and Jesus – the Lamb of God, The Christ, who came to this world. The disciples of John, under the influence of that moment and their teacher, ask a question to Jesus: where do you live? The answer of Christ was enigmatic – come with me and you will see. 

 

Afterwards, Jesus himself called the two brothers: Andrew and Simon, who were fishermen. At the beginning of His work and mission, Christ called people, to follow him. God welcomes all people to join Him and take part in His mission. 

 

The words of Jesus: come with me and I’ll show where I live, show the pragmatic side of our faith. To follow God, it means to put a lot of effort and be able to develop our commitment to Christ. The evidence to this is the first reading of Samuel, when the prophet as a child could not recognize the voice of God. Thank of his teacher and the spiritual master Eli, he was able to listen to God next time. The result of being attentive to the Lord was of what the author emphasises, no word of Samuel fell on the ground, nor was in vain.   We must look for Jesus with pure and honest heart and the Lord will build His home in our souls. The permanent invitation of God encourages us to make our spiritual life deeper and deeper.    

 

When we are reading the today’s Gospel, we cannot omit one, quite important element. Jesus called Simon by name, even more, he changed his name for Peter (Petra, Greek: Rock). Christ never said: hello man, but he always used the name to call others. Why is it important? Because in every name are hidden the deepest secrets and mysteries about us. My name contains my dignity, my nature, and the most personal traits. God knows us and He calls us by name. It testifies His respect and dedication to us. 

 

In the Christian culture, every human name deserves respect and decent treatment. The Lord says, I have called you by name, follow me, and you may find the “home” of mine in your heart. Amen.

Jan stał wraz z dwoma swoimi uczniami i gdy zobaczył przechodzącego Jezusa, rzekł: „Oto Baranek Boży”. Dwaj uczniowie usłyszeli, jak mówił, i poszli za Jezusem. Jezus zaś odwróciwszy się i ujrzawszy, że oni idą za Nim, rzekł do nich: „Czego szukacie?” Oni powiedzieli do Niego: „Rabbi, to znaczy: Nauczycielu, gdzie mieszkasz?” Odpowiedział im: „Chodźcie, a zobaczycie”. Poszli więc i zobaczyli, gdzie mieszka, i tego dnia pozostali u Niego. Było to około godziny dziesiątej. Jednym z dwóch, którzy to usłyszeli od Jana i poszli za Nim, był Andrzej, brat Szymona Piotra. Ten spotkał najpierw swego brata i rzekł do niego: „Znaleźliśmy Mesjasza”, to znaczy: Chrystusa. I przyprowadził go do Jezusa. A Jezus wejrzawszy na niego rzekł: „Ty jesteś Szymon, syn Jana, ty będziesz się nazywał Kefas”, to znaczy: Piotr.

    W zeszłym tygodniu rozpoczęliśmy pierwszą część Okresu Zwykłego. Okres ten nie daje nam do rozmyślań jakiejś szczególnej tajemnicy, ale Kościół wskazuje na całą koncepcję życia Zbawiciela, które jest całkowicie zanurzone w Jego miłości i oddaniu się nam.

 

Czytając dzisiejszą Ewangelię Jana, jesteśmy świadkami spotkania Jana Chrzciciela z Jezusem – Barankiem Bożym, Chrystusem, który przyszedł na ten świat. Uczniowie Jana pod wpływem tej chwili i swoich nauczycieli zadali Jezusowi pytanie: gdzie mieszkasz? Odpowiedź Chrystusa była zagadkowa – chodź ze mną, a zobaczysz.

 

Następnie sam Jezus przywołał dwóch braci: Andrzeja i Szymona, którzy byli rybakami. Na początku swojego dzieła i misji Chrystus powołał ludzi, aby szli za Nim. Bóg zaprasza wszystkich ludzi, aby przyłączyli się do Niego i wzięli udział w Jego misji.

 

Słowa Jezusa: pojdź ze mną, a pokażę, gdzie mieszkam, ukazuje pragmatyczną stronę naszej wiary. Naśladować Boga oznacza włożyć wiele wysiłku i móc rozwijać nasze oddanie Chrystusowi. Dowodem na to jest pierwsze czytanie Księgi Samuela, kiedy prorok jako dziecko nie potrafił rozpoznać głos Boży. Dziękuję jego nauczycielowi i mistrzowi duchowemu Eli, następnym razem mógł on usłyszeć Boga. Konsekwencją bycia otwartym Pana było to, co podkreślił autor, żadne słowo Samuela nie spadło na ziemię i nie było daremne. Musimy szukać Jezusa czystym i uczciwym sercem, a Pan zbuduje swój dom w naszych duszach. Nieustanne zaproszenie Boga zachęca nas do pogłębiania naszego życia duchowego.

 

Czytając dzisiejszą Ewangelię nie możemy pominąć jednego, dość istotnego elementu. Jezus nazwał Szymona po imieniu, co więcej, zmienił imię na Piotr (Petra, gr. skała). Chrystus nigdy nie powiedział: „cześć, człowieku”, ale zawsze używał jego imienia. Dlaczego to jest ważne? Bo w każdym imieniu kryją się najgłębsze tajemnice o nas. Moje imię zawiera moją godność, moją naturę i najbardziej osobiste cechy. Bóg nas zna i wzywa po imieniu. Świadczy to o Jego szacunku i oddaniu dla nas.

 

W kulturze chrześcijańskiej każde imię ludzkie zasługuje na szacunek i godne traktowanie. Pan mówi: Wołam Cię po imieniu, podążaj za mną, a znajdziesz mój „dom” w swoim sercu. Amen.
