Luke 1:26-38

'I am the handmaid of the Lord'

The angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the House of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. He went in and said to her, ‘Rejoice, so highly favoured! The Lord is with you.’ She was deeply disturbed by these words and asked herself what this greeting could mean, but the angel said to her, ‘Mary, do not be afraid; you have won God’s favour. Listen! You are to conceive and bear a son, and you must name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David; he will rule over the House of Jacob for ever and his reign will have no end.’ Mary said to the angel, ‘But how can this come about, since I am a virgin?’ ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you’ the angel answered ‘and the power of the Most High will cover you with its shadow. And so the child will be holy and will be called Son of God. Know this too: your kinswoman Elizabeth has, in her old age, herself conceived a son, and she whom people called barren is now in her sixth month, for nothing is impossible to God.’ ‘I am the handmaid of the Lord,’ said Mary ‘let what you have said be done to me.’ And the angel left her.

    The Forth Sunday of Advent leads us to the house of Mary in Nazareth. It was a special time for her, because as the Gospel of Luke reports, she got married to Joseph and the time to dwell with her spouse came. All the sudden, the Archangel Gabriel appeared to and said: Rejoice, who are blessed among the women, you have found the God’s favour. The message from heaven made Mary very confused, she felt joy, but at the same time confusion and fear. 

 

Why she was so nervous? She was chosen by God, to be the Mother of Jesus, what is a great privilege. Yes, it is a privilege, but we need to understand the whole situation, because it was a big test for her faith and humility. 

 

Mary was married to Joseph, they planned their life, but one day God changed everything. How could Mary explain the whole situation to her husband? From the human point of view, it’s a challenge to say: I am the chosen one, I was chosen by God. We must emphasize one thing more; this situation might have had very serious consequences. Mary could have been sentenced to death for the supposed breaking of marital fidelity.

 

But Mary said “yes” without any concern of her safety.” Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word”. The Word became flesh, and the Incarnation of God’s Son was done. Thanks to her attitude, we are now beneficiates of the Redemption. 

 

The scene of the Angel’s Annunciation concerns our life. Gabriel becomes the Advocate of God. In this Advent time, he comes saying that the miracle of Nazareth may be repeated, again. Accept and receive the Son of God, he wants to celebrate this festivity with you, welcome Him to your heart, to your family. God does not want to disturb you but make this time more solemn and full of joy and happiness. It is not His desire to be so far, but close to you. 

 

Christmas is not the time of loneliness but community. It’s crucial to help the sick, elderly, vulnerable and poor people. Jesus Christ does not want us to be lonely. It is a great chance and occasion to speak to those with whom we haven’t talked for ages because of different reasons.

In my homeland, there is the old tradition on Christmas Vigil Day. While we prepare the evening dinner for the family, we put one plate more for an unexpected guest, for a pilgrim or a homeless person. This way, we fulfil the deed of mercy.

This feast should unite not divide. Let us do as much as possible, so that Jesus Christ may celebrate this time with us in joy and peace. Amen.

Luke 2:1-14

'In the town of David a saviour has been born to you'

Caesar Augustus issued a decree for a census of the whole world to be taken. This census – the first – took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria, and everyone went to his own town to be registered. So Joseph set out from the town of Nazareth in Galilee and travelled up to Judaea, to the town of David called Bethlehem, since he was of David’s House and line, in order to be registered together with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. While they were there the time came for her to have her child, and she gave birth to a son, her first born. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger because there was no room for them at the inn. 

  In the countryside close by there were shepherds who lived in the fields and took it in turns to watch their flocks during the night. The angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone round them. They were terrified, but the angel said, ‘Do not be afraid. Listen, I bring you news of great joy, a joy to be shared by the whole people. Today in the town of David a saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. And here is a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.’ And suddenly with the angel there was a great throng of the heavenly host, praising God and singing:

‘Glory to God in the highest heaven,

and peace to men who enjoy his favour.’

    This Holy Night and Day we celebrate the Mistry of the Nativity of Jesus again. The King of Peace has appeared to our eyes as the Lord of joy and hope. After the preparation of Advent, the Mother of Church trough the liturgy is celebrating with Her children the miracle of God, who became one of us, having received the human nature and sharing with us the consequences of being man. 

 

At that time this message was so needed and great because the life was full of fear and uncertainty. The Child of Jesus in his humble being, he shined the darkness of evil and hatred and brought peace and hope. The message of the Angel was so beautiful and meaningful, do not be afraid, I have come to bring to you a great message, today in the Bethlehem City, the King and God has been born, to give to you, his Salvation. This normal and inconspicuous night changed the course of the world, and for many people was to shine with the light of hope. 

 

 

Following the way of people from Bethlehem, this Holy Night I would like to stop and look at the Miracle of the Crib, where Jesus was born. The same message, which  was given 2000 years ago, is brough by the Church for us. The Angel says in the Gospel, do not be afraid, because I am announcing to you a great joy, the same Jesus Christ has been born in the hearts of many people, and the situation from Bethlehem we may celebrate with our brothers and sisters. The Star proclaims the gift of joy and peace, God is with us, the Emmanuel, who became man, as we say in the Credo. 

 

Today we need the gift of peace and hope from God, we are living in a very interesting but uncertain time, in the relative peace in Europe, with the wars and the “sea” of suffering, turn the eyes into God, at least asking him, where are you. Nowadays is not an easy to be a decent man, observing commandments, law, and good human manners. And Jesus Christ says to us, be strong and consistent, because I have conquered the world and this apparent power, which is built on fear and uncertainty. I want to pour into your heart joy and relieve. 

 

The Son of God, and his fragile human birth show to us hope, he is the Lord of peace. With this truth, so many people celebrate the Nativity of Jesus hoping, the better time will come, if not here on earth, at last in eternity. The greatest example are the men in these countries, where is not peace, the bombs are falling onto their houses and cities. They continually pray and celebrate Christmas with hope, one day everything will change. This is the fantastic example of faith. 

 

I remember a polish movie, showing the dark pages of the polish history from the XX centuries. 1^st of September of 1939, the Poles were invaded by the German, but 16 day later, on the 17^thof September, Poland was attacked by the Soviet Union, taking away any hope to defend the country, having been attacked from both sides. Over 20 000 soldiers, policemen, the border guards, doctors, intellectualist, engineers, and priest were imprisoned in the Russian Gulags. In December of 1939, they were waiting for the decision referring to their fate, on the 25^thwithout anything, they had hope, that one day will come, and Poland will regain freedom. Without the families, common table, solemn food, they used to sing the carols, and praying, one day everything will change. They lived with hope, comes from God, they believed, Jesus Christ is the Lord of time and every authority, he will win, with them, the people defending the country or not. 

 

Next year in April and May, over the 20.000 polish citizens were killed by the Soviet Authority, had been sentenced by the communist, only for that, they were polish. 

 

These histories show, Jesus Christ can win, even in the most darkness day of the humanity, because he is the light, shining of everything and everyone. 

 

May these days be full of joy and peace. The Child of God is born, this is the fact. Amen.

Bóg posłał anioła Gabriela do miasta w Galilei, zwanego Nazaret, do dziewicy poślubionej mężowi imieniem Józef, z rodu Dawida; a dziewicy było na imię Maryja. Wszedłszy do Niej, anioł rzekł: «Bądź pozdrowiona, łaski pełna, Pan z Tobą, błogosławiona jesteś między niewiastami ». Ona zmieszała się na te słowa i rozważała, co by miało znaczyć to pozdrowienie.

Lecz Anioł rzekł do Niej: «Nie bój się, Maryjo, znalazłaś bowiem łaskę u Boga. Oto poczniesz i porodzisz Syna, któremu nadasz imię Jezus. Będzie on wielki i zostanie nazwany Synem Najwyższego, a Pan Bóg da Mu tron Jego praojca, Dawida. Będzie panował nad domem Jakuba na wieki, a Jego panowaniu nie będzie końca».

Na to Maryja rzekła do Anioła: «Jakże się to stanie, skoro nie znam męża?»

Anioł Jej odpowiedział: «Duch Święty zstąpi na Ciebie i moc Najwyższego okryje Cię cieniem. Dlatego też Święte, które się narodzi, będzie nazwane Synem Bożym. A oto również krewna Twoja, Elżbieta, poczęła w swej starości syna i jest już w szóstym miesiącu ta, którą miano za niepłodną. Dla Boga bowiem nie ma nic niemożliwego».

Na to rzekła Maryja: «Oto ja służebnica Pańska, niech mi się stanie według słowa twego». Wtedy odszedł od Niej Anioł.

    Czwarta niedziela Adwentu prowadzi nas do domu Maryi w Nazarecie. Był to dla niej czas szczególny, gdyż jak podaje Ewangelia Łukasza, wyszła za mąż za Józefa i nadszedł czas zamieszkania ze swoim małżonkiem. Nagle ukazał się Archanioł Gabriel i powiedział: Raduj się, błogosławiona między niewiastami, znalazłaś łaskę u Boga. Wiadomość z nieba wprawiła Marię w wielkie zakłopotanie, poczuła radość, ale jednocześnie zamęt i strach.

 

Dlaczego była taka zdenerwowana? Została wybrana przez Boga na Matkę Jezusa, co jest wielkim przywilejem. Tak, to przywilej, ale musimy zrozumieć całą sytuację, bo to była wielka próba jej wiary i pokory.

 

Maryja była żoną Józefa, planowali swoje życie, ale pewnego dnia Bóg wszystko zmienił. Jak Maria mogła wyjaśnić mężowi całą sytuację? Z ludzkiego punktu widzenia wyzwaniem jest powiedzieć: jestem wybranką, zostałam wybrana przez Boga. Musimy podkreślić jeszcze jedną rzecz; sytuacja ta mogła mieć bardzo poważne konsekwencje. Maria mogła zostać skazana na śmierć za rzekome złamanie wierności małżeńskiej.

 

Ale Maria powiedziała „tak”, nie martwiąc się o swoje bezpieczeństwo. Oto jestem służebnicą Pana; niech mi się stanie według Twojego słowa”. Słowo stało się ciałem i dokonało się Wcielenie Syna Bożego. Dzięki jej postawie jesteśmy teraz beneficjentami Odkupienia.

 

Scena Zwiastowania Maryi dotyczy naszego życia. Gabriel staje się Orędownikiem Boga. W czasie Adwentu przychodzi i mówi, że cud z Nazaretu może się powtórzyć. Przyjmij Syna Bożego, On pragnie z Tobą obchodzić to święto, przyjmij Go do swojego serca, do swojej rodziny. Bóg nie chce Ci przeszkadzać, ale spraw, aby ten czas był bardziej uroczysty i pełen radości i szczęścia. Nie jest Jego pragnieniem być tak daleko, ale blisko ciebie.

 

Święta Bożego Narodzenia to nie czas samotności, ale wspólnoty. Niezwykle istotna jest pomoc osobom chorym, starszym, bezbronnym i biednym. Jezus Chrystus nie chce, żebyśmy byli samotni. To świetna szansa i okazja, aby porozmawiać z tymi, z którymi z różnych powodów nie rozmawialiśmy od lat.

W mojej ojczyźnie istnieje stara tradycja Wigilii Bożego Narodzenia. Przygotowując wieczorny obiad dla rodziny, stawiamy o jeden talerz więcej dla niespodziewanego gościa, dla pielgrzyma czy bezdomnego, czyniąc w ten sposób dzieło miłosierdzia. 

To święto powinno łączyć, a nie dzielić. Czyńmy wszystko, co w naszej mocy, aby Jezus Chrystus mógł przeżywać z nami ten czas w radości i pokoju. Amen.

(Łk 2, 1-14) 
W owym czasie wyszło rozporządzenie Cezara Augusta, żeby przeprowadzić spis ludności w całym świecie. Pierwszy ten spis odbył się wówczas, gdy wielkorządcą Syrii był Kwiryniusz. Podążali więc wszyscy, aby się dać zapisać, każdy do swego miasta. Udał się także Józef z Galilei, z miasta Nazaret, do Judei, do miasta Dawidowego zwanego Betlejem, ponieważ pochodził z domu i rodu Dawida, żeby się dać zapisać z poślubioną sobie Maryją, która była brzemienna. Kiedy tam przebywali, nadszedł dla Maryi czas rozwiązania. Powiła swego pierworodnego Syna, owinęła Go w pieluszki i położyła w żłobie, gdyż nie było dla nich miejsca w gospodzie. W tej samej okolicy przebywali w polu pasterze i trzymali straż nocną nad swoją trzodą. Wtem stanął przy nich anioł Pański i chwała Pańska zewsząd ich oświeciła, tak że bardzo się przestraszyli. I rzekł do nich anioł: "Nie bójcie się! Oto zwiastuję wam radość wielką, która będzie udziałem całego narodu: dziś bowiem w mieście Dawida narodził się wam Zbawiciel, którym jest Mesjasz, Pan. A to będzie znakiem dla was: znajdziecie Niemowlę owinięte w pieluszki i leżące w żłobie". I nagle przyłączyło się do anioła mnóstwo zastępów niebieskich, które wielbiły Boga słowami: "Chwała Bogu na wysokościach, a na ziemi pokój ludziom, w których sobie upodobał".

    W tą Świętą Noc i Dzień ponownie obchodzimy Misterium Narodzin Jezusa. Król Pokoju ukazał się naszym oczom jako Pan radości i nadziei. Po przygotowaniu Adwentu, Matka Kościoł poprzez liturgię celebruje wraz ze swoimi dziećmi cud Boga, który stał się jednym z nas, przyjmując ludzką naturę i dzieląc się z nami konsekwencjami bycia człowiekiem.

 

W tamtym czasie to przesłanie było tak potrzebne i wielkie, ponieważ życie było pełne strachu i niepewności. Dzieciątko Jezus w swojej pokornej istocie rozjaśniło ciemność zła i nienawiści oraz przyniosło pokój i nadzieję. Przesłanie Anioła było piękne i znaczące, nie bójcie się, przyszedłem przynieść wam wspaniałe przesłanie, dzisiaj w mieście Betlejem narodził się Król i Bóg, aby dać wam swoje Zbawienie. Ta zwyczajna i niepozorna noc odmieniła bieg świata, a dla wielu ludzi miało zaświecić światło nadziei.

 

 

Idąc drogą ludzi z Betlejem, w tę Świętą Noc pragnę zatrzymać się i popatrzeć na Cud Żłóbka, w którym narodził się Jezus. To samo przesłanie, które zostało przekazane 2000 lat temu, jest niesione przez Kościół dla nas. Anioł mówi w Ewangelii: nie bójcie się, bo zwiastuję wam radość wielką, w sercach wielu ludzi narodził się ten sam Jezus Chrystus, a wydarzenie z Betlejem możemy celebrować z naszymi braćmi. Gwiazda Betlejemska głosi dar radości i pokoju, Bóg jest z nami, Emmanuel, który stał się człowiekiem, jak mówimy w Credo.

 

Dziś potrzebujemy daru pokoju i nadziei od Boga, żyjemy w bardzo ciekawym, choć niepewnym czasie, względny pokój w Europie, wojny i „morze” cierpień zwracają oczy ku Bogu, przynajmniej pytając Go, gdzie jesteś. W dzisiejszych czasach nie jest łatwo być przyzwoitym człowiekiem, przestrzegającym przykazań, prawa i dobrych manier. A Jezus Chrystus mówi nam, bądźcie silni i konsekwentni, bo Ja zwyciężyłem świat i jego pozorną moc, która jest zbudowana na strachu i niepewności. Chcę wlać w Twoje serce radość i ukojenie.

 

Syn Boży i jego kruche ludzkie narodziny dają nam nadzieję, On jest Panem pokoju. Tęprawdę, tak wielu ludzi świętuje Boże Narodzenie z nadzieją, że nadejdzie lepszy czas, jeśli nie tu na ziemi, to wreszcie w wieczności. Najlepszym przykładem są ludzie w tych krajach, gdzie nie ma pokoju, bomby spadają na ich domy i miasta. Nieustannie się modlą i świętują Boże Narodzenie z nadzieją, że pewnego dnia wszystko się zmieni. Fantastyczny przykład wiary.

 

Pamiętam polski film, pokazujący ciemne karty polskiej historii XX wieku. 1 września 1939 roku Niemcy napadli na Polaków, lecz 16 dni później, 17 września, Polska została zaatakowana przez Związek Radziecki, pozbawiając ją wszelkiej nadziei na obronę kraju, będąc atakowanym z obu stron. W rosyjskich gułagach więziono ponad 20 000 żołnierzy, policjantów, funkcjonariuszy straży granicznej, lekarzy, intelektualistów, inżynierów i księży. W grudniu 1939 roku czekali na decyzję dotyczącą ich losu, 25-go bez niczego materialnego, mieli nadzieję, że kiedyś nadejdzie dzień, w którym Polska odzyska wolność. Bez rodzin, wspólnego stołu, uroczystego posiłku, śpiewali kolędy i modlili się, że pewnego dnia wszystko się zmieni. Żyli nadzieją, która pochodzi od Boga. Uwierzyli, że Jezus Chrystus jest Panem czasu i wszelkiej władzy, On zwycięży wraz z nimi , lub bez nich.

 

W następnym roku, w kwietniu i maju, ponad 20 000 obywateli Polski zostało zabitych przez władzę sowiecką, skazanych przez komunistów, tylko dlatego, że byli to polscy obywatele.

 

Te historie pokazują, że Jezus Chrystus może zwyciężyć nawet w najbardziej mrocznym dniu ludzkości, ponieważ jest światłością oświecącą wszystkiego i wszystkich.

 

Niech te dni mimo wszystko będą pełne radości i pokoju. Narodziło się Dziecię Boże, to jest fakt. Amen.
