Luke 24:13-35

They recognised him at the breaking of bread

Two of the disciples of Jesus were on their way to a village called Emmaus, seven miles from Jerusalem, and they were talking together about all that had happened. Now as they talked this over, Jesus himself came up and walked by their side; but something prevented them from recognising him. He said to them, ‘What matters are you discussing as you walk along?’ They stopped short, their faces downcast.

  Then one of them, called Cleopas, answered him, ‘You must be the only person staying in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have been happening there these last few days.’ ‘What things?’ he asked. ‘All about Jesus of Nazareth’ they answered ‘who proved he was a great prophet by the things he said and did in the sight of God and of the whole people; and how our chief priests and our leaders handed him over to be sentenced to death, and had him crucified. Our own hope had been that he would be the one to set Israel free. And this is not all: two whole days have gone by since it all happened; and some women from our group have astounded us: they went to the tomb in the early morning, and when they did not find the body, they came back to tell us they had seen a vision of angels who declared he was alive. Some of our friends went to the tomb and found everything exactly as the women had reported, but of him they saw nothing.’

  Then he said to them, ‘You foolish men! So slow to believe the full message of the prophets! Was it not ordained that the Christ should suffer and so enter into his glory?’ Then, starting with Moses and going through all the prophets, he explained to them the passages throughout the scriptures that were about himself.

  When they drew near to the village to which they were going, he made as if to go on; but they pressed him to stay with them. ‘It is nearly evening’ they said ‘and the day is almost over.’ So he went in to stay with them. Now while he was with them at table, he took the bread and said the blessing; then he broke it and handed it to them. And their eyes were opened and they recognised him; but he had vanished from their sight. Then they said to each other, ‘Did not our hearts burn within us as he talked to us on the road and explained the scriptures to us?’

  They set out that instant and returned to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven assembled together with their companions, who said to them, ‘Yes, it is true. The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.’ Then they told their story of what had happened on the road and how they had recognised him at the breaking of bread.

   The Third Sunday of Easter. Through 50 day with the Mother of Church, we celebrate the Christ’s Joy of Resurrection. This historical and spiritual even is so great, then it is difficult to make our festivities within one day, and even thought in one week. God gives us a great opportunity to be rejoiced of Easter Season through the whole Paschal Time. 

 

Today, the Gospel of Luke, which was read on the Easter Wednesday, during the Octave of Easter, reports about the situation of the Easter Morning, when the two disciples met an unknown person. Whilst they met Jesus, (they couldn’t recognize him), they were deliberated about many things. And Jesus ask them, what are you talking about? This question made them confused, because in their minds was thought about Christ, who was crucified. 

 

They answered, you must be the only person, who does not know, what have been happened on these days. What, Jesus continued? 

 

Probably, they responded to Jesus with tenancy, that Christ, who had been recognized as the Messiah and Great Prophet, was martyred and killed by the Superiors of Israel. And they added, we were expecting, that he might have liberated our nation. 

 

This expectation of the two disciples is the key of their disappointment and the whole Gospel for today. They were thinking, Jesus is another King of David, who might to come to make Israel free, politicly and militarily. The hope of them was, the liberation come thought the blood of the Romans and the collaborates of them, to appoint a new country of Palestine. 

 

Whilst Jesus was talking to them, he presented the whole prophesy about him, beginning form Moses going through the prophets. Yes, I have come to liberate Israel, not by shedding somebody else’s blood and killing others, but he is the Lamb slaughtered for our Redemption. Yes, the Blood was poured out for the freedom of everyone, but by the Blood of The Son of God. 

 

When did those people recognize the real Jesus? The day was going to an end, and they gathered in the house. Jesus took bread and gave them to share. It was the Mystery Eucharist. They recognized him at the breaking of bread, which is connected to the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Christ. 

 

And, what about us? We have the same tendency, as those disciples had. So often we have own imaginations of God, which are so far from the real person of God. We expect from God some tremendous action, deeds. 

 

We often say, God should do this or that, his reaction must be quicker. We impose condition to God; he should work according our will.

 

I suppose to, that many of us is saying, God is Almighty, why does not he want to conquer the wars, in many different difficulties. Why we cannot go back to normal? He is able do all these things. He is Almighty. The example of the two disciples of the way to Emmaus teaches us about great wisdom of the Creator. God is a great Strategist, he knows better, what to do at a given time. Last Sunday we mentioned about his Mercy, saying: Jesus, I trust in You, it means, I believe and commit my life to you, because your wisdom surpasses my human intelligence. 

 

 

Let us pray together, to be able to recognize real God and strategy of him in my life. Where may we recognize his, like these two men, at the breaking of bread, at Eucharist. Amen.

W pierwszy dzień tygodnia dwaj uczniowie Jezusa byli w drodze do wsi, zwanej Emaus, oddalonej o sześćdziesiąt stadiów od Jeruzalem. Rozmawiali oni z sobą o tym wszystkim, co się wydarzyło. Gdy tak rozmawiali i rozprawiali z sobą, sam Jezus przybliżył się i szedł z nimi. Lecz oczy ich były jakby przesłonięte, tak że Go nie poznali. On zaś ich zapytał: "Cóż to za rozmowy prowadzicie z sobą w drodze?" Zatrzymali się smutni. A jeden z nich, imieniem Kleofas, odpowiedział Mu: "Ty jesteś chyba jedynym z przebywających w Jerozolimie, który nie wie, co się tam w tych dniach stało". Zapytał ich: "Cóż takiego?" Odpowiedzieli Mu: "To, co się stało z Jezusem Nazarejczykiem, który był prorokiem potężnym w czynie i słowie wobec Boga i całego ludu; jak arcykapłani i nasi przywódcy wydali Go na śmierć i ukrzyżowali. A my spodziewaliśmy się, że On właśnie miał wyzwolić Izraela. Ale po tym wszystkim dziś już trzeci dzień, jak się to stało. Nadto, jeszcze niektóre z naszych kobiet przeraziły nas: były rano u grobu, a nie znalazłszy Jego ciała, wróciły i opowiedziały, że miały widzenie aniołów, którzy zapewniają, iż On żyje. Poszli niektórzy z naszych do grobu i zastali wszystko tak, jak kobiety opowiadały, ale Jego nie widzieli". Na to On rzekł do nich: "O, nierozumni, jak nieskore są wasze serca do wierzenia we wszystko, co powiedzieli prorocy! Czyż Mesjasz nie miał tego cierpieć, aby wejść do swej chwały?" I zaczynając od Mojżesza, poprzez wszystkich proroków, wykładał im, co we wszystkich Pismach odnosiło się do Niego. Tak przybliżyli się do wsi, do której zdążali, a On okazywał, jakby miał iść dalej. Lecz przymusili Go, mówiąc: "Zostań z nami, gdyż ma się ku wieczorowi i dzień się już nachylił". Wszedł więc, aby zostać wraz z nimi. Gdy zajął z nimi miejsce u stołu, wziął chleb, odmówił błogosławieństwo, połamał go i dawał im. Wtedy otworzyły się im oczy i poznali Go, lecz On zniknął im z oczu. I mówili między sobą: "Czy serce nie pałało w nas, kiedy rozmawiał z nami w drodze i Pisma nam wyjaśniał?" W tej samej godzinie zabrali się i wrócili do Jeruzalem. Tam zastali zebranych Jedenastu, a z nimi innych, którzy im oznajmili: «Pan rzeczywiście zmartwychwstał i ukazał się Szymonowi". Oni również opowiadali, co ich spotkało w drodze i jak Go poznali przy łamaniu chleba.

   Trzecia Niedziela Wielkanocna. Przez 50 dni wraz z Matką Kościoła świętujemy Radość Zmartwychwstania Chrystusa. To historyczne i duchowe wydarzenie jest tak wielkie, że trudno je uczcić w jeden dzień czy nawet tydzień. Bóg daje nam wielką sposobność do radowania się przez cały czas Paschalny.

 

Dzisiejsza Ewangelia św. Łukasza, którą odczytywano także w Środę Wielkanocną, w oktawie Wielkanocy, relacjonuje sytuację, jaka wydarzyła się w poranek wielkanocny, dwóch uczniów spotkało nieznaną im osobę. Nie poznali Jezusa i podczas spotkania z Nim rozmawiali o wielu rzeczach. Jezus zapytał ich: o czym wy rozmawiacie? To pytanie wprawiło ich w zakłopotanie, ponieważ mówili o Chrystusie, który został ukrzyżowany.

 

Odpowiedzieli: „Musisz być jedyną osobą, która nie wie, co się ostatnio wydarzyło”. „Co się stało?”, kontynuował Jezus?

 

Dwaj uczniowie uważali Chrystusa za Mesjasza i wielkiego proroka, który poniósł męczeńską śmierć. Spodziewali się także, że może wyzwolić ich naród.

 

Te oczekiwania obu uczniów są kluczem do zrozumienia dzisiejszej Ewangelii. Oni myśleli, że Jezus będzie kolejnym królem Dawidem, który powinien przynieść Izraelowi wolność z politycznego punktu widzenia. Mieli nadzieję, że Jezus wyznaczy nowe państwo na terytorium Palestyny.

 

Podczas rozmowy z nimi Jezus przedstawił całe proroctwo o Nim, poczynając od Mojżesza i omawiając słowa innych proroków. Tak, przyszedłem wyzwolić Izrael, nie przez przelewanie krwi i zabijanie ludzi. Jezus był Barankiem zabitym dla naszego odkupienia. Jego krew została przelana za wolność wszystkich.

 

Kiedy ci ludzie rozpoznali prawdziwego Jezusa? Dzień dobiegał końca, gdy zebrali się w domu. Jezus wziął trochę chleba i podzielił się nim z nimi. Rozpoznali Go, gdy dzielił się chlebem, sprawując Eucharystię.

 

A co z nami? Mamy taką samą tendencję jak ci uczniowie. Tak często mamy własne wyobrażenia o Bogu, które są tak dalekie od tego, kim On naprawdę jest. Oczekujemy od Boga spektakularnych działań i czynów.

 

Często mówimy, że Bóg powinien zrobić to czy tamto, Jego reakcja musi być szybsza. Wymagamy od Niego wielu działań i uważamy, że powinien działać zgodnie z naszą wolą.

 

Przypuszczam, że wielu z nas mówi: Bóg jest Wszechmogący, dlaczego nie może zakończyć wojen, trudnych sytuacji? Dlaczego nie możemy wrócić do normalnego życia. On jest w stanie zrobić te wszystkie rzeczy. On jest Wszechmogący. Przykład dwóch uczniów w drodze do Emaus jest dla nas lekcją wielkiej mądrości Stwórcy. Bóg jest wielkim strategiem, On wie lepiej, co robić w danym momencie. W ostatnią niedzielę rozważaliśmy o Jego Miłosierdziu. Mówiliśmy: Jezu, ufam Tobie. Wierzę i powierzam Ci moje życie, ponieważ Twoja mądrość przewyższa moją ludzką inteligencję.

 

 

Módlmy się razem, abyśmy mogli rozpoznać prawdziwego Boga i Jego plany, tak jak rozpoznali Go ci dwaj mężczyźni, gdy dzielili się chlebem. Amen.
