Luke 10:38-42

Martha works; Mary listens

Jesus came to a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. She had a sister called Mary, who sat down at the Lord’s feet and listened to him speaking. Now Martha who was distracted with all the serving said, ‘Lord, do you not care that my sister is leaving me to do the serving all by myself? Please tell her to help me.’ But the Lord answered: ‘Martha, Martha,’ he said ‘you worry and fret about so many things, and yet few are needed, indeed only one. It is Mary who has chosen the better part; it is not to be taken from her.’

   Today the Gospel of Like move us to a place in Bethany. This is the same place, where Jesus spent 3 days before, he started to suffer in Jerusalem. It was a favoured place for Christ to rest with his friends, Lazarus, Maria, and Martha. 

 

The Gospel reports about the stay of Jesus there, the friends wanted to host him as much as they could. 

 

And all of a sudden, Luke indicates on the two sisters, Martha and Maria, whose attitude was completely different. Maria was listening to the words of Jesus, meditating them, and Martha was preoccupied with preparing the meal. The second sister seeing the whole situation, she said to Christ, why don’t you bother, that I am so busy, and my sister ignores to help me, listening to you only? 

 

The answer of Jesus must have been shocking for Martha. He said, Marta, Martha you care for some many, and it needed little only, your sister has chosen a better part listening to me. 

 

The words of Christ make us aware about the temptation of activism without God. I can be a very preoccupied person, working so hard, having had the sense of usefulness and the unique person, and the same time to forget about God and losing the felling, I am working for God’s glory, not only for my ambitions.

 

For sure, Martha was a good woman, hosting his Master and friend, but she forgot what is the most important about God and his Kingdom.

 

 

Couple weeks ago, I met a man, who said to me: I do not come to church to Mass, but I do a lot for people, I am charitable man. That attitude showed to me, that the man justified himself, I do so many things, which are the remedy for my absence of Mass and other practices of faith. It is important to help, to do charity, it is definite needed. But the Christianity is not a profit organisation and charitable work only, but the place for God in my life. 

 

Martha, Martha you do so many things, and it’s needed so little, to make a home for me in your heart. 

 

Let us do good things, not neglecting my relationship to God. Amen.

Jezus przyszedł do jednej wsi. Tam pewna niewiasta, imieniem Marta, przyjęła Go w swoim domu. Miała ona siostrę, imieniem Maria, która usiadłszy u nóg Pana, słuchała Jego słowa. Marta zaś uwijała się około rozmaitych posług. A stanąwszy przy Nim, rzekła: "Panie, czy Ci to obojętne, że moja siostra zostawiła mnie samą przy usługiwaniu? Powiedz jej, żeby mi pomogła". A Pan jej odpowiedział: "Marto, Marto, martwisz się i niepokoisz o wiele, a potrzeba mało albo tylko jednego. Maria obrała najlepszą cząstkę, której nie będziepozbawiona".

   Dziś Ewangelia przenosi nas do miejsca w Betanii. Jest to samo miejsce, w którym Jezus spędził 3 dni, zanim zaczął cierpieć w Jerozolimie. Było to ulubione miejsce odpoczynku Chrystusa ze swoimi przyjaciółmi, Łazarzem, Marią i Martą.

 

Ewangelia informuje nas o pobycie Jezusa w tym miejscu, gdzie przyjaciele chcieli go ugościć jak tylko mogli.

 

Nagle Łukasz wskazuje na dwie siostry, Martę i Marię, których postawa była zupełnie inna. Maria słuchała słów Jezusa, rozmyślając nad nimi, a Marta była zajęta przygotowaniem posiłku. Druga siostra, widząc całą sytuację, powiedziała do Chrystusa, dlaczego się nie przejmujesz, że jestem tak zajęta, a moja siostra ignoruje mnie by pomóc, słuchając tylko Ciebie?

 

Odpowiedź Jezusa musiała być dla Marty szokująca; Marto, Marto troszczysz się o wielu, a niewiele trzeba, Twoja siostra wybrała lepszą część słuchając Mnie.

 

Słowa Chrystusa uświadamiają nas o pokusę aktywizmu bez Boga. Mogę być osobą bardzo zajętą, pracującą tak ciężko, mając poczucie użyteczności i wyjątkowej pracy, a jednocześnie zapominającą o Bogu i tracąc poczucie, że pracuję na chwałę Bożą, a nie tylko dla swoich ambicji.

 

Na pewno Marta była dobrą kobietą, goszcząc Jezusa, ale zapomniała o tym, co najważniejsze, o Bogu i Jego Królestwie.

 

 

Kilka tygodni temu spotkałem człowieka, który powiedział mi: nie chodzę do kościoła na Mszę św., ale dużo robię dla ludzi, jestem człowiekiem dobroczynnym. Ta postawa pokazała mi, że człowiek usprawiedliwiał się; robię tak wiele rzeczy, które są lekarstwem na mój brak Mszy św. i innych praktyk wiary. Ważne jest, aby pomagać, prowadzić działalność charytatywną, jest to zdecydowanie potrzebne. Ale chrześcijaństwo to nie tylko organizacja non-profit i pracy charytatywnej, ale miejsce dla Boga w moim życiu.

 

Marto, Marto czynisz tak wiele rzeczy, a tak niewiele potrzeba, aby stworzyć dla Mnie miejsce w Twoim sercu.

 

Czyńmy dobre rzeczy, nie zaniedbując mojej relacji z Bogiem. Amen.
