John 8:1-11

'Let the one among you who has not sinned be the first to throw a stone'

Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. At daybreak he appeared in the Temple again; and as all the people came to him, he sat down and began to teach them.

  The scribes and Pharisees brought a woman along who had been caught committing adultery; and making her stand there in full view of everybody, they said to Jesus, ‘Master, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery, and Moses has ordered us in the Law to condemn women like this to death by stoning. What have you to say?’ They asked him this as a test, looking for something to use against him. But Jesus bent down and started writing on the ground with his finger. As they persisted with their question, he looked up and said, ‘If there is one of you who has not sinned, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.’ Then he bent down and wrote on the ground again. When they heard this they went away one by one, beginning with the eldest, until Jesus was left alone with the woman, who remained standing there. He looked up and said, ‘Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?’ ‘No one, sir’ she replied. ‘Neither do I condemn you,’ said Jesus ‘go away, and do not sin any more.’

   Every day we are closer and closer to the celebration of The Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Fifth Sunday of Lent starts the second part of 40 days, which focuses on the Passion and Death of Christ. The Gospel of John gives us the chapter where we can see Jesus returning from the Olives Mountain. Probably that place had become a moment of his private prayer to his Father. When he comes down into the city, he meets some Pharisees and the Scribes of Israel. Those people brought a woman who had been caught in adultery. That crime was punished by stoning, a slow and cruel death. The whole situation had another context yet. That day had become a moment to put Jesus to the test, to be able to discredit him. 

What did Christ do in this inconvenient situation, not brake the law and condemn the woman? He was starting to write on the ground. And this while has become the critical thing for the whole scene. He said; if someone is without sin, throw the stone first on her. Afterwards, the people started to leave the place, one by one. The question of Jesus was; nobody has condemned you? No Master, she replied, nor I do not condemn you, go in peace, and do not sin again. 

The wisdom and intelligence of Christ made people aware; nobody is without sin and weakness, and no one has the mandatory to condemn the person itself. 

 

The Gospel indicates the truth, God and the church never refused man as a person, having total respect for him, but Jesus said to the lady, do not sin again. And this point makes a big difference. 

 

Today we can hear the church and the whole of Christianity reject some people, breaking the attitude of tolerance. 

 

It’s not true; God never refuses man, but sin and lack of repentance and obduracies. According to the tradition, the woman was Mary Magdala; she changed her life, becoming the faithful disciple of Christ. She was the first witness of Christ's Resurrection. All these things had to precede her conversion and change her lifestyle. 

 

God loves us, but not our sins and tendency to wrongdoing. That's the difference. May these days of Lent, which have left, help us fight with sin and weakness and become a new man in Easter time. Amen.

Jezus udał się na Górę Oliwną, ale o brzasku zjawił się znów w świątyni. Cały lud schodził się do Niego, a On usiadłszy nauczał ich. Wówczas uczeni w Piśmie i faryzeusze przyprowadzili do Niego kobietę którą pochwycono na cudzołóstwie, a postawiwszy ją pośrodku, powiedzieli do Niego: Nauczycielu, tę kobietę dopiero pochwycono na cudzołóstwie. W Prawie Mojżesz nakazał nam takie kamienować. A Ty co mówisz? Mówili to wystawiając Go na próbę, aby mieli o co Go oskarżyć. Lecz Jezus nachyliwszy się pisał palcem po ziemi. A kiedy w dalszym ciągu Go pytali, podniósł się i rzekł do nich: Kto z was jest bez grzechu, niech pierwszy rzuci na nią kamień. I powtórnie nachyliwszy się pisał na ziemi. Kiedy to usłyszeli, wszyscy jeden po drugim zaczęli odchodzić, poczynając od starszych, aż do ostatnich. Pozostał tylko Jezus i kobieta, stojąca na środku. Wówczas Jezus podniósłszy się rzekł do niej: Kobieto, gdzież oni są? Nikt cię nie potępił? A ona odrzekła: Nikt, Panie! Rzekł do niej Jezus: I Ja ciebie nie potępiam. - Idź, a od tej chwili już nie grzesz.

    Z każdym dniem jesteśmy coraz bliżej obchodów Zmartwychwstania Jezusa Chrystusa. Piąta Niedziela Wielkiego Postu rozpoczyna drugą część 40 dni, która skupia się na Męce i Śmierci Chrystusa. Ewangelia Jana daje nam rozdział, w którym widzimy Jezusa powracającego z Góry Oliwnej. Prawdopodobnie to miejsce stało się momentem Jego prywatnej modlitwy Z Ojcem. W momencie schodzenia do miasta, spotyka On kilku faryzeuszy i uczonych w Piśmie Izraela. Ci ludzie przyprowadzili kobietę przyłapaną na cudzołóstwie. Ta zbrodnia była ukarana ukamienowaniem, powolną i okrutną śmiercią. Cała sytuacja miała jeszcze inny kontekst. Ten dzień stał się momentem wystawienia Jezusa na próbę, aby móc go zdyskredytować.

Co zrobił Chrystus w tej niewygodnej sytuacji, by nie złamać prawa i nie potępić kobiety? Zaczął pisać na ziemi, mówiąc; jeśli ktoś jest bez grzechu, niech rzuci w nią kamieniem. Natychmiast ludzie zaczęli jeden po drugim odchodzić z tego miejsca. Jezusa zapytał kobietę; nikt cię nie potępił? „Nie Mistrzu”, odpowiedziała. Chrystus rzekł; i ja Cię nie potępiam cię, idź w pokoju i nie grzesz.

Mądrość i inteligencja Chrystusa uświadomiły ludziom, że nikt nie jest bez grzechu i słabości i nikt nie ma obowiązku potępienia drugiej osoby.

 

Ewangelia wskazuje na prawdę, Bóg i Kościół nigdy nie odrzuca człowieka jako osoby, mając dla niego całkowity szacunek, ale Jezus powiedział do kobiety, nie grzesz ponownie, a to stanowi dużą różnicę.

 

Dziś słyszymy slogan, jakby Kościół i całe chrześcijaństwo odrzuca niektórych ludzi, łamiąc postawę tolerancji.

 

To nie prawda; Bóg nigdy nie odrzuca człowiekowi, ale odrzuca grzech i brak pokuty, oraz zatwardziałość serca. Według tradycji tą kobietą była Maria Magdalena; ona zmieniła swoje życie, stając się wierną uczennicą Chrystusa. Była pierwszym świadkiem Zmartwychwstania Chrystusa. To wszystko musiało się dokonać po jej nawróceniu.

 

Bóg nas kocha, ale nie toleruje naszych grzechów i skłonności do złego postępowania.  A to jest zasadniczą różnicą. Niech te dni Wielkiego Postu, które pozostały, pomogą nam walczyć z grzechem i słabością, by stać się nowym człowiekiem na czas Wielkanocy i dalszych dni naszego życia. Amen.
