Luke 3:10-18

'Someone is coming who will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire'

When all the people asked John, ‘What must we do?’ he answered, ‘If anyone has two tunics he must share with the man who has none, and the one with something to eat must do the same.’ There were tax collectors too who came for baptism, and these said to him, ‘Master, what must we do?’ He said to them, ‘Exact no more than your rate.’ Some soldiers asked him in their turn, ‘What about us? What must we do?’ He said to them, ‘No intimidation! No extortion! Be content with your pay!’

  A feeling of expectancy had grown among the people, who were beginning to think that John might be the Christ, so John declared before them all, ‘I baptise you with water, but someone is coming, someone who is more powerful than I am, and I am not fit to undo the strap of his sandals; he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing-fan is in his hand to clear his threshing-floor and to gather the wheat into his barn; but the chaff he will burn in a fire that will never go out.’ As well as this, there were many other things he said to exhort the people and to announce the Good News to them.

   On the 3rd Sunday of Advent, we step in deeper into the Mystery of the Incarnation. John the Baptist announces," the Real Son of God is coming behind me, he is near, so prepare your heart for his presence".

 

Today's Sunday inscribes into the expectation, the Third Sunday is called, The Sunday of Gaudete, it means, The Sunday of Rejoicing. The Author of the First Reading, Zephaniah 3:14-18 says:

 

Rejoice, exult with all your heart,

daughter of Jerusalem!

The Lord has repealed your sentence;

he has driven your enemies away.

The Lord, the king of Israel, is in your midst;

you have no more evil to fear.

 

Indeed, this is the time of happiness, because for a while, we will celebrate the Birthday of the King, who became a man.

 

But, let us return to today's Gospel, once again. John the Baptist preached about Baptism of Repentance, he encouraged to change of life. Many people, come, asking the same question; "What must we do?"’

 

The John's answer is; ‘Exact no more than your rate.’ Some soldiers asked him in their turn, ‘what about us? What must we do?’ He said to them, ‘No intimidation! No extortion! Be content with your pay!’

 

W can notice, John says about righteousness, which is the foundation of the Christian world.

Advent and John indicate the need of cooperation with God, charity and justice in daily life. This time, as the whole faith in God, demand my involvement in the interest of good in my life and my background. 

 

So, the words of John indicate righteousness and just. We should build justice. But what does justice mean for Christians? The hint of that, we can find in the Gospel according to Matthew and the words of Jesus: 

 

"Happy those who hunger and thirst for what is right" Mt 5,6.

 

The sermon at the Mountain about the blessing gives indicates, what is my job. We need the desire, what is right. The right, which is codified in God's and Human Law.    

 

The core of that, it’s containing in the Gospel's Rule: "Love God and your neighbour". Apart of that, to be just, it means my observation of Civilian Law of my country (homeland).

 

Secondly, Jesus says: "So always treat others as you would like them to treat you". Mt 7,12

This is the golden rule of Christianity. Do this, whatever different people should do properly to you.  We do not want to be harmed, cheated and treated wrongly. Do as you would be done by. Even though, if it is very difficult, we should repay of good against the evil.  

 

This world needs the fundamental right of justice, and the feeling, that everyone of us has the same dignity of man and the same sense of being treated with courtesy and Christian love. The biggest problem of nowadays is lack of balance between the people. There is a big gap beyond rich countries and people, and those who have very little. The Popes of the XX century and the certain Pope Francis call the powerful of this world, to be more fraternal to each other, sharing goodness among us. 

 

Of course, we cannot change the whole earth, but at least, being just and charitable, we may make a better life around us. 

 

This attitude makes us different from people of modern world. Be honest and just, as the Lord and John the Baptist say, so do it.

Gdy Jan nauczał nad Jordanem, pytały go tłumy: „Cóż mamy czynić?”. On im odpowiadał: „Kto ma dwie suknie, niech jedną da temu, który nie ma; a kto ma żywność, niech tak samo czyni”. Przychodzili także celnicy, żeby przyjąć chrzest, i pytali Go: „Nauczycielu, co mamy czynić?”. On im odpowiadał: „Nie pobierajcie nic więcej ponad to, ile wam wyznaczono”. Pytali go też i żołnierze: „A my, co mamy czynić?”. On im odpowiadał: „Nad nikim się nie znęcajcie i nikogo nie uciskajcie, lecz poprzestawajcie na swoim żołdzie”. Gdy więc lud oczekiwał z napięciem i wszyscy snuli domysły w sercach co do Jana, czy nie jest on Mesjaszem, on tak przemówił do wszystkich: „Ja was chrzczę wodą; lecz idzie mocniejszy ode mnie, któremu nie jestem godzien rozwiązać rzemyka u sandałów. On chrzcić was będzie Duchem Świętym i ogniem. Ma On wiejadło w ręku dla oczyszczenia swego omłotu: pszenicę zbierze do spichrza, a plewy spali w ogniu nieugaszonym”. Wiele też innych napomnień dawał ludowi i głosił dobrą nowinę.

   W trzecią niedzielę Adwentu wkraczamy głębiej w Tajemnicę Wcielenia. Jan Chrzciciel ogłasza: „Prawdziwy Syn Boży idzie za mną, jest blisko, więc przygotuj swoje serce na Jego obecność”.

Dzisiejsza niedziela wpisuje się w oczekiwanie, Trzecia Niedziela nazywa się Niedzielą Gaudete, to znaczy Niedzielą Radości. Autor pierwszego czytania Sofoniasza 3:14-18 mówi:

Wyśpiewuj, Córo Syjońska, podnieś radosny okrzyk, Izraelu! Ciesz się i wesel z całego serca, Córo Jeruzalem! Pan oddalił wyroki na ciebie, usunął twego nieprzyjaciela; Król Izraela, Pan, jest pośród ciebie, już nie będziesz bała się złego. 

Rzeczywiście, to czas szczęścia, bo za chwilę będziemy obchodzić urodziny Króla, który stał się człowiekiem.

Wróćmy jednak raz jeszcze do dzisiejszej Ewangelii. Jan Chrzciciel głosił o chrzcie pokuty, zachęcał do zmiany życia. Przychodzi wielu ludzi, zadając to samo pytanie; „Co musimy zrobić?”

Odpowiedź Jana brzmi; „pozostań na swoim zarobku, to co Tobie przysługuje”. Niektórzy żołnierze pytali go z kolei: „A co z nami? Co mamy robić?” Jan odpowiedział im: „nie prześladuj ludzi! Bądź zadowolony ze swojej pensji!”

Możemy zauważyć, że Jan mówi o sprawiedliwości, która jest fundamentem świata chrześcijańskiego.

Adwent i Jan wskazują na potrzebę współpracy z Bogiem, miłości i sprawiedliwości w życiu codziennym. 

Tak więc słowa Jana wskazują na sprawiedliwość i szacunek. Powinniśmy budować sprawiedliwy świat. Ale co oznacza sprawiedliwość dla chrześcijan? Wskazówkę znajdziemy w Ewangelii Mateusza i w słowach Jezusa:

„Błogosławieni, którzy łakną i pragną sprawiedliwości, albowiem oni będą nasyceni. ” Mt 5,6.

Kazanie na Górze o błogosławieństwie wskazuje czego potrzebujemy, a  potrzebujemy pragnienia, tego, co słuszne. Prawo, które jest skodyfikowane w Prawie Bożym i ludzkim.

Sednem tego jest zawarta w Ewangelii reguła: „Kochaj Boga i bliźniego”. Poza tym,  być sprawiedliwym, wyraża się w  moim przestrzeganiu prawa cywilnego mojego kraju (ojczyzny).

Po drugie, Jezus mówi: „Wszystko więc, co byście chcieli, żeby wam ludzie czynili, i wy im czyńcie! ”. Mt 7,12

To jest złota zasada chrześcijaństwa. Czyń to, czego oczekujesz od innych. Nie chcemy być krzywdzeni, oszukiwani i źle traktowani. To wielka próba znalezienia siebie w drugich. Nawet jeśli jest to bardzo trudne, powinniśmy odpłacać dobrem przed złem.

Ten świat potrzebuje podstawowego prawa do sprawiedliwości i poczucia, że ​​każdy z nas ma tę samą godność człowieka i to samo poczucie bycia traktowanym z uprzejmością i chrześcijańską miłością. Największym problemem dzisiejszych czasów jest brak równowagi między ludźmi. Istnieje duża przepaść poza bogatymi krajami i ludźmi, a tymi, którzy mają bardzo mało. Papieże XX wieku i obecny papież Franciszek wzywają możnych tego świata, aby byli bardziej braterscy, dzieląc się między sobą dobrocią.

Oczywiście nie możemy zmienić całego świata, ale będąc sprawiedliwymi i uczynnymi, możemy stworzyć lepsze życie wokół nas.

Ta postawa odróżnia nas od ludzi współczesnego świata. Bądź uczciwy i sprawiedliwy, jak mówią Pan i Jan Chrzciciel, więc czyńmy to teraz i tutaj. Amen.
