Matthew 2:1-12

The visit of the Magi

After Jesus had been born at Bethlehem in Judaea during the reign of King Herod, some wise men came to Jerusalem from the east. ‘Where is the infant king of the Jews?’ they asked. ‘We saw his star as it rose and have come to do him homage.’ When King Herod heard this he was perturbed, and so was the whole of Jerusalem. He called together all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, and enquired of them where the Christ was to be born. ‘At Bethlehem in Judaea,’ they told him ‘for this is what the prophet wrote:

And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,

you are by no means least among the leaders of Judah,

for out of you will come a leader

who will shepherd my people Israel.’

Then Herod summoned the wise men to see him privately. He asked them the exact date on which the star had appeared, and sent them on to Bethlehem. ‘Go and find out all about the child,’ he said ‘and when you have found him, let me know, so that I too may go and do him homage.’ Having listened to what the king had to say, they set out. And there in front of them was the star they had seen rising; it went forward, and halted over the place where the child was. The sight of the star filled them with delight, and going into the house they saw the child with his mother Mary, and falling to their knees they did him homage. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh. But they were warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, and returned to their own country by a different way.

   Today we celebrate one the oldest events of the Church: the Epiphany of Jesus Christ. The first witnesses of the Bethlehem’s miracle were the shepherds and the local people. But the Son of God appeared also to some people who did not belong to the Jewish World, who were pagans. The Gospel according to Matthew, which is usually read on this day, reports about the arrival of Magi. Where were they from and who were they? Unfortunately, we can say almost nothing about it, apart from the fact that they came from the Far East. They brought gift to Jesus – gold, myrrh and frankincense. These gifts prophesied His divinity, kingdom and death. 

 

Let’s look at the Magi, because we can learn a lot from them. Despite they did not belong to the Judah-Christian world, The Magi are able to offer something to us. What? Let's try to understand it. 

 

The Magi did not know the Prophecy of Isaiah and The Jewish Scriptures. But they made a decision to go to the West in order to give homage to the newborn king, who they could not know before. Their journey was very risky, expensive and tiring. But their inner voice forced them to go. 

 

In their behaviour there is a hint for us.  We are called to look for Jesus Christ in our daily life despite all our other duties, deeds and feelings. Jesus says: I am the Son of God. Do not forget about me, look for me everywhere and with your mind and soul. Especially in the Blessed Sacrament. As the Magi did, sometimes you must take a risk. Choosing me will be rewarded. Looking for me means that you love me. 

You shall seek God with your whole heart and mind. He is the God who fascinates us every day.   

 

Moreover, the Magi's stubbornness teaches us the proper attitude to God.  These three travellers wanted to see the new-born king and pay the homage. We need to do the same, our Christian life is built on worship and paying glory to God.

 

Of course, our homage and worship do not make God more holy, because already without our praise He is almighty and saint, but our praises help to determine our place in the history of Salvation. As the Forth Preface of Ordinary Time in the Missal says: "since our praises add nothing to your greatness but profit us for salvation, through Christ our Lord.

 

Our praise does not make God a bigger one, but we, as humans become more humble, and can find our own place and profit from salvation. At the same time when people praise God, they give a beautiful example about their faith and real presence of the Lord. 

 

Almighty God and our Saviour, thank you for the example of Magi, the example of the right homage. Make us able to do the same, to become people of faith and homage. Amen.

Gdy Jezus narodził się w Betlejem w Judei za panowania króla Heroda, oto Mędrcy ze Wschodu przybyli do Jerozolimy i pytali: „Gdzie jest nowo narodzony król żydowski? Ujrzeliśmy bowiem Jego gwiazdę na Wschodzie i przybyliśmy oddać Mu pokłon”. Skoro usłyszał to król Herod, przeraził się, a z nim cała Jerozolima. Zebrał więc wszystkich arcykapłanów i uczonych ludu i wypytywał ich, gdzie ma się narodzić Mesjasz. Ci mu odpowiedzieli: „W Betlejem judzkim, bo tak napisał prorok: A ty, Betlejem, ziemio Judy, nie jesteś zgoła najlichsze spośród głównych miast Judy, albowiem z ciebie wyjdzie władca, który będzie pasterzem ludu mego, Izraela”. Wtedy Herod przywołał potajemnie Mędrców i wypytał ich dokładnie o czas ukazania się gwiazdy. A kierując ich do Betlejem, rzekł: „Udajcie się tam i wypytujcie starannie o Dziecię, a gdy Je znajdziecie, donieście mi, abym i ja mógł pójść i oddać Mu pokłon”. Oni zaś wysłuchawszy króla, ruszyli w drogę. A oto gwiazda, którą widzieli na Wschodzie, szła przed nimi, aż przyszła i zatrzymała się nad miejscem, gdzie było Dziecię. Gdy ujrzeli gwiazdę, bardzo się uradowali. Weszli do domu i zobaczyli Dziecię z Matką Jego, Maryją; upadli na twarz i oddali Mu pokłon. I otworzywszy swe skarby, ofiarowali Mu dary: złoto, kadzidło i mirrę. A otrzymawszy we śnie nakaz, żeby nie wracali do Heroda, inną drogą udali się do ojczyzny.

Dziś obchodzimy jedno z najstarszych wydarzeń w Kościele: Objawienie Jezusa Chrystusa. Pierwszymi świadkami cudu betlejemskiego byli pasterze i miejscowa ludność. Ale Syn Boży ukazał się także ludziom, którzy nie należeli do świata żydowskiego, byli poganami. Ewangelia według Mateusza, którą zwykle czyta się tego dnia, informuje o nadejściu Mędrców. Skąd oni przybyli i kim byli? Niestety nie mamy zbyt wielu informacji, poza tym, że pochodzili z Dalekiego Wschodu. Przynieśli Jezusowi dar - złoto, mirrę i kadzidło. Te dary przepowiadały Jego boskość, królestwo i śmierć.

 

Spójrzmy na Mędrców, ponieważ możemy się od nich wiele nauczyć. Mimo że nie należeli do świata judaistyczno-chrześcijańskiego, Mędrcy są w stanie coś nam zaoferować. Co? Spróbujmy to zrozumieć.

 

Mędrcy nie znali proroctwa Izajasza i żydowskich Pism. Postanowili jednak udać się na Zachód, aby złożyć hołd nowonarodzonemu królowi, którego wcześniej nie znali. Ich podróż była bardzo ryzykowna, kosztowna i męcząca. Ale ich wewnętrzny głos zmusił ich do przybycia.

 

W ich zachowaniu jest dla nas wskazówka. Jesteśmy wezwani do szukania Jezusa Chrystusa w naszym codziennym życiu pomimo wszystkich naszych innych obowiązków, uczynków i uczuć. Jezus mówi: Jestem Synem Bożym. Nie zapominaj o mnie, szukaj mnie wszędzie, umysłem i duszą. Szczególnie w Najświętszym Sakramencie. Tak jak Mędrcy, czasami trzeba zaryzykować. Wybór zostanie nagrodzony. Szukanie mnie, oznacza, że ​​mnie kochasz.

Będziesz szukać Boga całym sercem i umysłem. On jest Bogiem, który fascynuje nas każdego dnia.

 

Co więcej, upór Mędrców uczy nas właściwego stosunku do Boga. Ci trzej podróżnicy chcieli zobaczyć nowo narodzonego króla i złożyć hołd. Powinniśmy zrobić to samo, nasze życie chrześcijańskie jest zbudowane na uwielbieniu i oddawaniu chwały Bogu.

 

Oczywiście nasz hołd i uwielbienie nie czynią Boga bardziej świętym, ponieważ już bez naszej chwały jest On Wszechmocny i Święty, ale nasze uwielbienie pomaga określić nasze miejsce w historii zbawienia. Jak mówi Czwarta Prefacja Czasu Zwykłego w Mszale: „ ... nasze hymny pochwalne Tobie, ale się przyczyniają do naszego zbawienia, przez naszego Pana Jezusa Chrystusa."

Nasza chwała nie czyni Boga większym, ale my, ludzie, stajemy się bardziej pokorni i możemy znaleźć własne miejsce i skorzystać ze zbawienia. Jednocześnie, gdy ludzie chwalą Boga, dają piękny przykład swojej wiary i prawdziwej obecności Pana.

 

Wszechmogący Boże i nasz Zbawiciel, dziękujemy Ci za przykład Mędrców, przykład właściwego hołdu. Spraw, abyśmy byli w stanie zrobić to samo, abyśmy stali się ludźmi wiary i hołdu. Amen.
