'I am the handmaid of the Lord'
The angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the House of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. He went in and said to her, ‘Rejoice, so highly favoured! The Lord is with you.’ She was deeply disturbed by these words and asked herself what this greeting could mean, but the angel said to her, ‘Mary, do not be afraid; you have won God’s favour. Listen! You are to conceive and bear a son, and you must name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David; he will rule over the House of Jacob for ever and his reign will have no end.’ Mary said to the angel, ‘But how can this come about, since I am a virgin?’ ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you’ the angel answered ‘and the power of the Most High will cover you with its shadow. And so the child will be holy and will be called Son of God. Know this too: your kinswoman Elizabeth has, in her old age, herself conceived a son, and she whom people called barren is now in her sixth month, for nothing is impossible to God.’ ‘I am the handmaid of the Lord,’ said Mary ‘let what you have said be done to me.’ And the angel left her.
The Forth Sunday of Advent leads us to the house of Mary in Nazareth. It was a special time for her, because as the Gospel of Luke reports, she got married to Joseph and the time to dwell with her spouse came. All the sudden, the Archangel Gabriel appeared to and said: Rejoice, who are blessed among the women, you have found the God’s favour. The message from heaven made Mary very confused, she felt joy, but at the same time confusion and fear.
Why she was so nervous? She was chosen by God, to be the Mother of Jesus, what is a great privilege. Yes, it is a privilege, but we need to understand the whole situation, because it was a big test for her faith and humility.
Mary was married to Joseph, they planned their life, but one day God changed everything. How could Mary explain the whole situation to her husband? From the human point of view, it’s a challenge to say: I am the chosen one, I was chosen by God. We must emphasize one thing more; this situation might have had very serious consequences. Mary could have been sentenced to death for the supposed breaking of marital fidelity.
But Mary said “yes” without any concern of her safety. ” Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word”. The Word became flesh, and the Incarnation of God’s Son was done. Thanks to her attitude, we are now beneficients of the Redemption.
The scene of the Angel’s Annunciation concerns our life. Gabriel becomes the Advocate of God. In this Advent time, he comes saying that the miracle of Nazareth may be repeated, again. Accept and receive the Son of God, he wants to celebrate this festivity with you, welcome Him to your heart, to your family. God does not want to disturb you but make this time more solemn and full of joy and happiness. It is not His desire to be so far, but close to you.
Christmas is not the time of loneliness but community. It’s crucial to help the sick, elderly, vulnerable and poor people. Jesus Christ does not want us to be lonely. It is a great chance and occasion to speak to those with whom we haven’t talked for ages because of different reasons.
In my homeland, there is the old tradition on Christmas Vigil Day. While we prepare the evening dinner for the family, we put one plate more for an unexpected guest, for a pilgrim or a homeless person.
This feast should unite not divide. Let us do as much as possible, so that Jesus Christ may celebrate this time with us in joy and peace. Amen.

Bóg posłał anioła Gabriela do miasta w Galilei, zwanego Nazaret, do dziewicy poślubionej mężowi imieniem Józef, z rodu Dawida; a dziewicy było na imię Maryja. Lecz anioł rzekł do Niej: "Nie bój się, Maryjo, znalazłaś bowiem łaskę u Boga. Oto poczniesz i porodzisz Syna, któremu nadasz imię Jezus. Będzie on wielki i zostanie nazwany Synem Najwyższego, a Pan Bóg da Mu tron Jego praojca, Dawida. Będzie panował nad domem Jakuba na wieki, a Jego panowaniu nie będzie końca". Na to Maryja rzekła do anioła: "Jakże się to stanie, skoro nie znam męża?" Anioł Jej odpowiedział: "Duch Święty zstąpi na Ciebie i moc Najwyższego okryje Cię cieniem. Dlatego też Święte, które się narodzi, będzie nazwane Synem Bożym. a oto również krewna Twoja, Elżbieta, poczęła w swej starości syna i jest już w szóstym miesiącu ta, którą miano za niepłodną. Dla Boga bowiem nie ma nic niemożliwego". Na to rzekła Maryja: "Oto ja służebnica Pańska, niech mi się stanie według słowa twego". Wtedy odszedł od Niej Anioł.
Czwarta Niedziela Adwentu prowadzi nas do domu Maryi w Nazarecie, gdzie Najświętsza Dziewica prowadzi swoje codzienne życie. Był to dla niej szczególny czas, ponieważ jak podaje Ewangelia Łukasza, była już mężatką Józefa i to był moment, aby zamieszkać ze swoim małżonkiem. Nagle, podczas codziennych obowiązków Maryi, ukazał się Jej Archanioł Gabriel, mówiąc: Raduj się, błogosławiona między niewiastami, znalazłaś łaskę Bożą. Orędzie z nieba bardzo zdezorientowało Maryję, w sercu zapanowało uczucie radości, zagubienia i strachu.
Dlaczego Ona była zmieszana, wybrana przez Boga na Matkę Jezusa, to taki wielki przywilej? Tak, to przywilej, ale musimy zrozumieć całą sytuację, to był wielki sprawdzian jej wiary i pokory.
Maria wyszła za mąż za Józefa, oboje planowali wspólne życie i pewnego dnia Bóg zmienił wszystko, nie Józef będzie ojcem jej dziecka, ale Bóg. Jak mogła wyjaśnić mężowi całą sytuację? Z ludzkiego punktu widzenia i wierności małżeńskiej to było wyzwanie. Musimy podkreślić jeszcze jedną rzecz; sytuacja ta mogła spowodować skazanie Marii na śmierć za rzekome zerwanie wierności małżeńskiej.
Ale Maryja powiedziała, nie myśląc o swoim bezpieczeństwem, tak: „Ja jestem służebnicą Pańską, niech mi się stanie, co powiedziałaś”. Zgodnie z „tak” Maryi, Słowo stało się ciałem i dokonało się Wcielenie Syna Bożego. Dzięki jej postawie jesteśmy dobrodziejami Odkupienia Jezusa Chrystusa.
