How happy are the poor in spirit
Today, with the whole Church, we are celebrating one of the most important feasts of the year – the Solemnity of All the Saints. The Church indicates two things: one is the glory of all the redeemed, both those which are known by names, and those anonymous, who have never been announced as saints and blessed, but through their virtuous life they achieved heaven. On this day we glorify God for creating that great community of the heroes of faith.
John the Evangelist, in his Book of Revelation, calls them the New Heavenly Jerusalem, the Eternal City of God, where dwell those who are worn in white garment and washed the robes in the blood of Christ. (Rev. 7,14). They give the proof that everyone may become saint and imitate God in His holiness.
And now we reach the point of our Christian main goal. Our ordinary vacation to holiness. Christian life leads us to sanctity. It is not an option, but the common duty and call. As members of the Church, since we were baptised, we have been invited to imitate our God. Why? The answer is shown in the two fragments of the Bible. God says twice: “be holy, for I am holy”. The first text comes from The Book of the Leviticus (11, 44) and the second one from the First Letter of St. Peter (1P 1,16).
Trying to achieve holiness is not a privilege but the dignity of all believers. God says: be like me, be saint, and work on your holiness every day, so that one day you will be able to stay with me.
But of course it is not an easy task. Instead, it is like a battle for eternity. The Gospel of Matthew makes us aware of that difficult, spiritual fight. The Eight Beatitudes show say that we should be merciful, meek, just, gentle, poor in spirit, thirst of right, but on the other side we should also be ready for hatred, harm and persecution. This text shows us the real battle for God in our life and Christian’s ideas.
If we follow Jesus, we have to be ready for difficulties. Not for a nice and comfortable life only, but for constant fight for our spiritual development. The faith is for fighters, who fight in the name of God and for His Church and holiness.
As Jesus said: “You will be hated by all because of my name, but whoever endures to the end will be saved” Mt 10, 22.
May this feast of today encourage us to follow Christ and achieve holiness in our life. Amen.
Jezus, widząc tłumy, wyszedł na górę. A gdy usiadł, przystąpili do Niego Jego uczniowie. Wtedy otworzył swoje usta i nauczał ich tymi słowami: "Błogosławieni ubodzy w duchu, albowiem do nich należy królestwo niebieskie. Błogosławieni, którzy się smucą, albowiem oni będą pocieszeni. Błogosławieni cisi, albowiem oni na własność posiądą ziemię. Błogosławieni, którzy łakną i pragną sprawiedliwości, albowiem oni będą nasyceni. Błogosławieni miłosierni, albowiem oni miłosierdzia dostąpią. Błogosławieni czystego serca, albowiem oni Boga oglądać będą. Błogosławieni, którzy wprowadzają pokój, albowiem oni będą nazwani synami Bożymi. Błogosławieni, którzy cierpią prześladowanie dla sprawiedliwości, albowiem do nich należy królestwo niebieskie.
