Matthew 21:33-43

This is the landlord's heir: come, let us kill him

Jesus said to the chief priests and the elders of the people, ‘Listen to another parable. There was a man, a landowner, who planted a vineyard; he fenced it round, dug a winepress in it and built a tower; then he leased it to tenants and went abroad. When vintage time drew near he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his produce. But the tenants seized his servants, thrashed one, killed another and stoned a third. Next he sent some more servants, this time a larger number, and they dealt with them in the same way. Finally he sent his son to them. “They will respect my son” he said. But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, “This is the heir. Come on, let us kill him and take over his inheritance.” So they seized him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. Now when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?’ They answered, ‘He will bring those wretches to a wretched end and lease the vineyard to other tenants who will deliver the produce to him when the season arrives.’ Jesus said to them, ‘Have you never read in the scriptures:

It was the stone rejected by the builders

that became the keystone.

This was the Lord’s doing

and it is wonderful to see?

‘I tell you, then, that the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit.’

   Once again we have an occasion to listen to the parable about the landowner and his workers. This Gospel uncovers the next mystery of the human being. The people who were hired to work in the vineyard didn’t manage to resist temptation and unfortunately, they became robbers and even murderers. There turned out to be ungrateful and committed the biggest crime which is a murder.

This parable is one of the examples of people, who are plenty of pride and demands, it seems to them, the whole world and things of it belong to them. They cannot recognize the sense of bestow. This kind of man is not able to feel any gratitude to God and others, because in his opinion everything should belong to them. 

 

Unlimited hanger of possession may lead to hatred, harms and even crime, as we can notice in the today’s Gospel, when the tenancies killed the servers and finally the son of the owner. 

 

Greed and lack of gratitude harm God and people.

 

God gave us a lot of gifts, but so often we forget about it. We don't realize what we have, but our human nature wants more and more. There is a well known saying: “Appetite comes with eating.” and it is so true. We justify our behaviour because we are jealous that other people have more.

 

Today's Gospel teaches us that we should be grateful. It reminds us that our life is the gift from God. Nobody is perfect, but we all should give our thanks to God for the life that He gave us. 

 

One more thing, being grateful teaches us humility. We should be humble and aware of the dignity and value of our lives. 

The greatest lesson of gratitude and humility is every Mass. Jesus himself offers to his Father for our Salvation. As the unblemished gift he submits himself on the Altar for us to God. 

All the texts of Mass contain thanksgiving and gratitude to God, all the hymns praise the Heavenly Father, and they are as the proof of his glory.

 

I would like to quote a poem, which is etched in bronze at the Rehabilitation Institute in New York:

I asked God to give me the power to succeed -

"He made me weak to teach me obedience;

I asked for health to do great deeds -

He gave me a disability to do even better;

 

I asked God for money so I could be happy -

"He gave me poverty to be wise;

 

I asked for power to gain respect -

He gave me weakness to feel the need of God;

 

I asked for a companion in order not to live alone -

He gave me my heart so I could love all my brothers;

 

I asked for joy -

"And I have been given life to enjoy everything;

 

I did not receive what I asked -

"But I got everything I expected.

 

Almost despite myself; My unspeakable prayers have been heard.

And I am the happiest of all people.

Jezus powiedział do arcykapłanów i starszych ludu: "Posłuchajcie innej przypowieści. Był pewien gospodarz, który założył winnicę. Otoczył ją murem, wykopał w niej tłocznie, zbudował wieżę, w końcu oddał ją w dzierżawę rolnikom i wyjechał. Gdy nadszedł czas zbiorów, posłał swoje sługi do rolników, by odebrali plon jemu należny. Ale rolnicy chwycili jego sługi i jednego obili, drugiego zabili, trzeciego zaś ukamienowali. Wtedy posłał inne sługi, więcej niż za pierwszym razem, lecz i z nimi tak samo postąpili. W końcu posłał do nich swego syna, tak sobie myśląc: Uszanują mojego syna. Lecz rolnicy, zobaczywszy syna, mówili do siebie: "To jest dziedzic; chodźcie, zabijmy go, a posiądziemy jego dziedzictwo". Chwyciwszy go, wyrzucili z winnicy i zabili. Kiedy więc przybędzie właściciel winnicy, co uczyni z owymi rolnikami?" Rzekli Mu: "Nędzników marnie wytraci, a winnicę odda w dzierżawę innym rolnikom, takim, którzy mu będą oddawali plon we właściwej porze". Jezus im rzekł: "Czy nigdy nie czytaliście w Piśmie: "Ten właśnie kamień, który odrzucili budujący, stał się głowicą węgła. Pan to sprawił, i jest cudem w naszych oczach". Dlatego powiadam wam: Królestwo Boże będzie wam zabrane, a dane narodowi, który wyda jego owoce".

   Po raz kolejny mamy okazję wysłuchać przypowieści o właścicielu ziemskim i jego robotnikach. Ta Ewangelia odsłania kolejną tajemnicę człowieka. Ludzie zatrudnieni do pracy w winnicy nie potrafili oprzeć się pokusie i niestety stali się rabusiami, a nawet mordercami. 

Ta przypowieść jest jednym z przykładów ludzi, którzy są pełni pychy i żądań, do tego stopnia, że ​​wydaje im się, że cały świat i jego rzeczy należą do nich. Nie potrafią rozpoznać sensu obdarowania. Taki człowiek nie jest w stanie odczuwać wdzięczności  Bogu i innym, bo w jego wysokim mniemaniu myśli, że wszystko należy do niego.

Niepohamowana chęć posiadania może prowadzić do nienawiści, krzywd, a nawet przestępstw, co możemy zauważyć w dzisiejszej Ewangelii, kiedy najemcy zabili sługi i wreszcie syna właściciela.

Chciwość i brak wdzięczności szkodzą Bogu i ludziom,  jednocześnie deprawują ludzkie sumienia. 

Bóg dał nam wiele darów, ale tak często o tym zapominamy. Nie zdajemy sobie sprawy z tego, co mamy, ale nasza ludzka natura chce coraz więcej. Jest takie znane powiedzenie: „Apetyt rośnie w miarę jedzenia”. i to jest prawda. Usprawiedliwiamy nasze zachowanie, ponieważ jesteśmy zazdrośni, że inni mają więcej.

Dzisiejsza Ewangelia uczy nas, że powinniśmy być wdzięczni. Przypomina nam, że nasze życie jest darem od Boga. Nikt nie jest doskonały, ale wszyscy powinniśmy dziękować Bogu za życie, które nam dał.

Jeszcze jedno, bycie wdzięcznym uczy pokory. Powinniśmy być pokorni i świadomi godności i wartości naszego życia.

Największą lekcją wdzięczności i pokory jest każda Msza św. Sam Jezus ofiarowuje siebie swojemu Ojcu dla naszego zbawienia. Jako nieskalany dar składa się za nas Bogu na ołtarzu.

Wszystkie teksty mszalne zawierają dziękczynienie i wdzięczność Bogu, wszystkie hymny wychwalają Ojca Niebieskiego i są dowodem Jego chwały i postawy obdarowanego człowieka.

Prosiłem...

Prosiłem Boga o danie mi mocy w osiąganiu powodzenia -

- Uczynił mnie słabym abym się nauczył pokornego posłuszeństwa;

Prosiłem o zdrowie dla dokonania wielkich czynów -

- Dał mi kalectwo, abym robił rzeczy lepsze;

 

Prosiłem Boga o bogactwo, abym mógł być szczęśliwy -

- Dał mi ubóstwo abym był rozumny;

 

Prosiłem o władzę, żeby mnie ludzie cenili -

- Dał mi niemoc, abym odczuwał potrzebę Boga;

 

Prosiłem o towarzysza, abym nie żył samotnie -

- Dał mi serce, abym mógł kochać wszystkich braci;

- A otrzymałem życie, abym mógł cieszyć się wszystkim;
