Matthew 22:15-21 |

Give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar
This story from the Gospel of Mathew shows the trial of humiliation of Jesus in the sight of people. But the answer of Jesus was perfect, he said, whatever belongs to God, give to God, whatever belongs to Caesar, give back to him. This trap of the Pharisees towards Christ was finished of defeat.
Although the failure of the Christ’s opponents, the Gospel has become a great lesson for us, about our relationship to God, to the Church and to the modern world.
Jesus Christ indicates a very important issue, concerning our existence today. He says, give proper attention to God and society, because it arises from your Christian dignity. There is the temptation to focus on God, and to neglect our daily life and the responsibility for other, or on the other hand, to reject God, and the whole energy devote to earthly things.
My relationship to God and my neighbours is one, according to the words of Jesus, where the two and more are in my name, I am there, too.
This unity of the relationship to God and to man teaches us about the transparency of human life.
The common values are honesty and righteousness, which comes from real love and care. To be honest to God, it means to love him with the whole heart, respect him and accept his teaching how it is. This attitude of love contains my esteem to the Church, as the Body of Christ. The Mother of Church needs my respect to her and to the members of Christian Community.
And finally, I cannot love God and Church without love of people. Give back, what belongs to Caesar, these words of Jesus mean my responsibility for society. Honesty and righteousness concern others. As society we should care for each other. This is not utopia, but duty. The manifestation of this obligation is observation of law, regulations, esteem to the country, where we live in, and paying taxes.
All these things are connected, my paying attention to God, Church and society.
Before I end, I would like to indicate one thing yet. This gospel of Matthew rises pretty important issue, about charity and altruism. Unfortunately, these things are not well known by many. Especially in Europe, where a load of people, they are very demanding, complaining. They think, that they deserve everything, not having any sense of gratitude.
Give God, whatever belongs to God and give back, what belongs to Caesar, these words make us aware about the sense of giving and sharing with others. Human life is not taking only, but the attitude of giving in the name of charity and altruism.
The greatest example is Jesus Christ, who gave himself to us, and he did take anything in return.
Let us observe all these things paying proper attention to God, Church and people. Amen.
Odpowiedzieli: "Cezara". Wówczas rzekł do nich: "Oddajcie więc cezarowi to, co należy do cezara, a Bogu to, co należy do Boga".
