John 20:1-9

He must rise from the dead

It was very early on the first day of the week and still dark, when Mary of Magdala came to the tomb. She saw that the stone had been moved away from the tomb and came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved. ‘They have taken the Lord out of the tomb’ she said ‘and we don’t know where they have put him.’

  So Peter set out with the other disciple to go to the tomb. They ran together, but the other disciple, running faster than Peter, reached the tomb first; he bent down and saw the linen cloths lying on the ground, but did not go in. Simon Peter who was following now came up, went right into the tomb, saw the linen cloths on the ground, and also the cloth that had been over his head; this was not with the linen cloths but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple who had reached the tomb first also went in; he saw and he believed. Till this moment they had failed to understand the teaching of scripture, that he must rise from the dead.

Easter Sunday. Today, we reach the culmination of our celebration. After His Passion, Christ crossed the border between death and life. As we sing: “That Christ is truly risen

  from the dead we know.Victorious king, thy mercy show!”.

The King of life won over the devil and evil and opened the Gate of Heaven.

This is the biggest triumph in the history of the world. Christ, as the Son of God, conquered death, and He gave the new meaning and prospect to our human life. It’s a beautiful testimony when at the beginning of the Eucharistic Prayer on Sunday the priests say: today we celebrate the first day of the week, when Jesus Christ has risen from death to life. 

Yes, this is the first and the most important day which has completely changed the history, providing hope, joy and eternal life. This is also the time of our triumph, because we belong to God trough the Sacrament of Baptism. We take part in the Jesus’ work and the miracle of the Resurrection.

Let’s try to look at the Gospel of John to find out more about that day. What happened on Easter Sunday? It was the first day after Sabbath, a lot of people came back to normal life, their work and their duties. Certainly, in their heads was still the whole history concerning Jesus and His Crucifixion. But they thought that everything is over. 

The Apostles gathered in the cenacle in fear of Jews. They were completely broken and full of doubts; will their Master rise from death? The Gospel of John reports their lack of faith: “Then the other disciple who had reached the tomb first also went in; he saw and he believed. Till this moment they had failed to understand the teaching of scripture, that he must rise from the dead”.

Only Mary believed that on the third day she may see her Son alive. 

So, the Easter Sunday seemed to be a normal day for many, and the beginning of mourning for the Apostles. The situation changed when Jesus Christ appeared and said to them “Peace be with you”. Afterwards, their sadness changed into joy and happiness.  

The same feelings we may have today. Yes, on Easter, the day of rejoice, we should participate in Christ’s Victory with faith and joy. But this year it is so difficult because of the circumstances. A question may arise, does it make any sense to celebrate Easter while we are facing the pandemic and we cannot celebrate it as usual. Many people suffer and die. Does it make any sense when there are no public services and masses or they are largely limited? 

Jesus says: yes, definitely it makes sense. I know my children, you are suffering now. I am convinced that you do not know what might happen. But my Resurrection and Victory will conquer all these things in eternity. I want to come to you, like on that day 2000 years ago, and say: “Peace be with you”.  

I would like to come to your families, when you will be celebrating the mystery of my death at your homes and attending on-line masses. I want to say, “Peace be with you, during your common prayer and meal”. This is my desire to tell you that I am alive, when you are drinking coffee or tea and talking to one another. Yes, this Easter is quite different and difficult, but God is coming to help us all. 

I think that God gives us a remarkable chance to experience the Resurrection of Christ in a different way. Because of many regulations and precautions we are limited. But God says: focus on what is the most important, think about my love and the promise of a new life. For many years, we were focused on material things, shopping etc., so now it’s time to focus on God.

This year, when we cannot do more than just stay at home, God is calling us to experience the silence of Easter and the truth of the empty tomb with our relatives.   

Let’s celebrate the joy of Resurrection within our families and remember about the people who fight for every single life: doctors, nurses and other medical staff. We should show them our appreciation and gratitude.

Jesus Christ, may your triumph be our joy and hope. Amen.

Pierwszego dnia po szabacie, wczesnym rankiem, gdy jeszcze było ciemno, Maria Magdalena udała się do grobu i zobaczyła kamień odsunięty od grobu. Pobiegła więc i przybyła do Szymona Piotra i do drugiego ucznia, którego Jezus kochał, i rzekła do nich: Zabrano Pana z grobu i nie wiemy, gdzie Go położono. Wyszedł więc Piotr i ów drugi uczeń i szli do grobu. Biegli oni obydwaj razem, lecz ów drugi uczeń wyprzedził Piotra i przybył pierwszy do grobu. A kiedy się nachylił, zobaczył leżące płótna, jednakże nie wszedł do środka. Nadszedł potem także Szymon Piotr, idący za nim. Wszedł on do wnętrza grobu i ujrzał leżące płótna oraz chustę, która była na Jego głowie, leżącą nie razem z płótnami, ale oddzielnie zwiniętą na jednym miejscu. Wtedy wszedł do wnętrza także i ów drugi uczeń, który przybył pierwszy do grobu. Ujrzał i uwierzył. Dotąd bowiem nie rozumieli jeszcze Pisma, które mówi, że On ma powstać z martwych.

   Niedziela Wielkanocna, docieramy  dokulminacji naszej uroczystości. Po swojej Męce Chrystus przechodzi ze śmierci do życia. Wyznajemy tą pradę śpiewając  Sekwencję: „Wiemy, żeś zmartwychwstał, że ten cud prawdziwy,

O Królu Zwycięzco, bądź nam miłościwy”.

To o dla wielu było niemożliwe, Król życia pokonał Szatana i zło, otwierając Bramę Niebios.

To największy triumf w historii świata. To się nigdy nie miało wydarzyło, ale Chrystus jako Syn Boga zwyciężył ludzką śmierć i nadaje nowy sens i perspektywę naszemu życiu. Ponadto mamy piękne świadectwo, gdy kapłani mówią na początku Modlitwy Eucharystycznej w niedzielę: uroczyście obchodzimy dzień tygodnia, w którym Jesus Chrystus Zmartwychwstał i zesłał na Apostołów Ducha Świętego".

Tak, to pierwszy i najważniejszy dzień, który całkowicie zmienił historię, dając nadzieję i radość życia wiecznego. To czas naszego triumfu, ponieważ należymy do Boga poprzez Sakrament Chrztu. Jesteśmy uczestnikami dzieła Jezusa i cudu Zmartwychwstania.

Spróbujmy spojrzeć na Ewangelię Jana, aby poznać początek tego dnia. Co się stało w Niedzielę Wielkanocną? Możemy zauważyć, że ten dzień był jak kolejny dzień, pierwszego dnia po szabacie, wiele osób wraca do normalności, idąc do pracy i swoich obowiązków. Pewnie w ich głowach wciąż były sprawy o Jezusie i Jego Ukrzyżowaniu. 

 Apostołowie zgromadzili się w Wieczerniku w obawie przed Żydami. Byli całkowicie załamani i mieli mnóstwo wątpliwości; czy na pewno Mistrz powstanie zmatrwych? A Ewangelia Jana mówi o braku wiary Apostolów: „Wtedy wszedł do wnętrza także i ów drugi uczeń, który przybył pierwszy do grobu. Ujrzał i uwierzył. Dotąd bowiem nie rozumieli jeszcze Pisma, które mówi, że On ma powstać z martwych”.

Jedynie cierpiąca Maryja wierzyła, że trzeciego dnia ujrzy swojego Syna żywego.

Tak więc Niedziela Wielkanocna dla wielu wydawała się normalnym dniem, a Apostołom czasem żałoby. Sytuacja uległa zmianie, kiedy Jezus Chystus pojawić w Wieczerniku, przekazując im słowa: „Pokój wam!”. Nagle ten smutek zamienił się w radość i szczęście.

Te same uczucia możemy podzielać i dzisiaj. Tak, Święto Wielkanocne, dzień radości, powinniśmy uczestniczyć w Chrystusowym Zwycięstwie z wiarą i radością. Ale w tym roku jest to tak trudne ze względu na okoliczności nas otaczających. Może pojawić się wątpliwość, to  nie ma sensu obchodzić tych świąt, podczas gdy mamy do czynienia z pandemią i nie radzimy sobie z nią, nie możemy obchodzić tych świat jak zwykle. Wiele osób cierpi i umiera. Czy ma to jakiś sens, skoro nie mamy dostępu do Mszy Świętej, komunii świętej , albo jest to w dużej mierze ograniczone?

Jezus mówi zdecydowanie, tak, to ma sens. Wiem moje dzieci, jesteście w trudnej sytuacji, odczuwacie wielki ból i cierpicie. Jestem przekonany, że nie wiecie, co może się stać. Ale moje Zmartwychwstanie i Zwycięstwo zwyciężyły wszystkie te rzeczy w wybierze wieczności. Chcę przyjść jak tamtego dnia 2000 lat temu i powiedzieć: „Pokój niech będzie z wami”.

Chciałbym przyjść do waszych rodzin, mówi Chrystus, kiedy wspólnie celebrujecie Moje Tajemnice w domu, uczestnicząc w Mszy św on-line, w telewizji. Chcę powiedzieć: Pokój wam, podczas wspólnej modlitwy i posiłku. Pragnę wam przekazać tą prawdę, że Ja jestem Żyjącym Bogiem wsród Was, kiedy spędzacie czas, pijąc kawę lub herbatę i rozmawiając ze sobą. Tak, ta Wielkanoc jest zupełnie inna i trudna, ale Bóg przychodzi do nas, aby podnieść nas na duchu.

Często myślałem, że Bóg daje nam niezwykłą szansę doświadczenia Zmartwychwstania. Ze względu na wiele przepisów i środków ostrożności jesteśmy ograniczeni na wiele sposobów. Bóg mówi, skup się na tym co najważniejsze, pomyśl o mojej miłości i ofierze dla Ciebie. Przez wiele lat byliśmy zajęci rzeczami materialnymi, zakupami, przygotowaniami, tak często tracąc Boga.

W tym roku, kiedy możemy uczynić mniej, Bóg wzywa nas, abyśmy przeżyli Ciszę Poranka Wielkanocnego i Prawdę o pustym grobie ze swoimi krewnymi.

Świętujmy radość Zmartwychwstania Chrystusa z rodziną, pamiętając o tych ludziach, którzy walczą o każde życie, o lekarzach, pielęgniarkach i całym personelu medycznym. Dla nich wielkie podziękowanie i uznanie.

Jezu Chryste, niech Twój Triumf będzie moją radością i nadzieją. Amen.
