Jesus in the Synagogue... Jezus w Synagodze...

 

Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21

‘Today this Scripture has been fulfilled.’

Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things that have been accomplished among us, just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word have delivered them to us, it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught.

  At that time: Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report about him went out through all the surrounding country. And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.

  And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll, and found the place where it was written,

‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,

because he has anointed me

to proclaim good news to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives

and recovering of sight to the blind,

to set at liberty those who are oppressed,

to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.’

And he rolled up the scroll, and gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, ‘Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.’

The Mother Church by faith moves us to a city called Nazareth. It was the town of Jesus, where he used to grow, spending his childhood. 

 

The author of the Gospel, Saint Luke writes about the meeting, while Christ was to come to the synagogue, it used to be a custom for every Jew, to listen to the Holy Scriptures.

 

On that day all the eyes were directed onto Jesus, because they knew, the person of Christ was about the phenomenal personality. They might have heard about him and his works and miracles.  

 

Those people had a big expectation toward Christ, they wanted to hear something extraordinary from him. 

 

And that day Christ was reading the Chapter of the prophet Isaiah, who indicates in his prophesy about the Messiah.

 

That message was too much for them, Jesus is the Son of God and the person, who has come to heal his people. The words of the Lord for them were full blasphemy, which implicates the greatest punishment in the law, death. 

The teaching of Jesus Christ did not encounter with the approbation of the Nazareth’s people. 

 

Nowadays we meet at Sunday Mass, the same as people from the biblical time, to listen to God. The Eucharistic Mystery gives us an opportunity to immerse into God’s voice and listen, what he wants to tell us. 

 

We are welcome to be gathered in his name to listen with an open heart and soul, and to allow to speak God out, not having any special expectation, to avoid the disappointments of my ideas.  So often, in my heart is a desire, I want to get from God, what I like, not what I really need. 

 

Everyday Jesus Christ gives to me his word, to change and flourish my life, let give to him a chance to do that, and understand, that he knows better, what I need. Amen.

Tego dnia wszystkie oczy były zwrócone na Jezusa, ponieważ znali osobę Chrystusa, która była postrzegana jako fenomenalna osobowość. Ci ludzie mogli o Nim słyszeć i widzieć działania Jezusa wśród miejscowych ludzi.

 

Ci ludzie mając wielkie oczekiwania wobec Chrystusa, chcieli Go słuchać i usłyszeć niezwykłe słowa i przesłanie. Problem polegał na tym, że oni czekali na Jezusa, który mógł odpowiadać ich pragnieniom i pomysłom.

The Mother of the Church... Matka Kościoła...

 

John 2:1-11

‘This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee.’

At that time: There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, ‘They have no wine.’ And Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.’ His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’

  Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding seventy or one hundred litres. Jesus said to the servants, ‘Fill the jars with water.’ And they filled them up to the brim. And he said to them, ‘Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.’ So they took it. When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom and said to him, ‘Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.’

  This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.

    On the Second Sunday in Ordinary Time, the Mother Church gives as the chapter of the John’s Gospel, number 2, which tells about the situation during the Wedding in Cana. The whole situation took place about 10 km from Nazareth, where Jesus, His Mother and Apostles were invited for the Wedding. Usually, all villagers were invited to share the joy with groom and bridegroom. From the technical and logistical point of view, parents and the newly married couple needed a lot of food and drink, especially wine, which was the fundamental drink, like for us tea or coffee. If there had not been enough wine, the stewards would have been covered with shame, because they did not prepare the reception properly.  It was quite an uncomfortable and complicated situation, which might have destroyed the reputation of the family. 

 

Such situation happened during the Wedding in Cana. While the guests were celebrating with the family, the organizers run out of wine. The mother of Jesus came to Him and asked: help them and save them from shame. Mary, as woman and mother took an action to help those people, even though the words of Christ were clear: my time has not come, yet. 

 

She asks the Son: help them, because they need your help. Mary is full of the mother’s sensitivity and compassion. She does not give up but asks Jesus. 

 

Her powerful character and attitude changed the whole inconvenient situation.

 

And here, we get the key point of the today’s Gospel. Mary is there, where is Jesus and the people who need her. She is the real Mother of God and us. She is present where her children are in need.

 

Here, in Gibraltar, we have a lot of legitimate examples of her care. We have been blessed thought her presence in our city, especially in her place of the Shrine, where for many centuries she has been proving her glory and love.

 

I remember, when I came here, I saw something very important, when twice a year (in May and September the 10^th) the people of Gibraltar gathered by the Shrine to worship their heavenly Queen and ask for God’s blessing and human prosperity. 

 

 

This is all about the awareness that everything we possess, we should offer to our Mather. Our presence time and the future, because we believe that she leads us. 

 

Mary, the Mother of God, care for us, as you did in Cana. Be our guide on Earth. Amen.

I napełnili je aż po brzegi. Potem powiedział do nich: "Zaczerpnijcie teraz i zanieście staroście weselnemu". Ci więc zanieśli. Gdy zaś starosta weselny skosztował wody, która stała się winem – a nie wiedział, skąd ono pochodzi, ale słudzy, którzy czerpali wodę, wiedzieli – przywołał pana młodego i powiedział do niego: "Każdy człowiek stawia najpierw dobre wino, a gdy się napiją, wówczas gorsze. Ty zachowałeś dobre wino aż do tej pory". Taki to początek znaków uczynił Jezus w Kanie Galilejskiej. Objawił swoją chwałę i uwierzyli w Niego Jego uczniowie.

    W drugą niedzielę zwykłą Matka Kościoła podaje nam 2 rozdziała z Ewangelii św. Jana, który opowiada o sytuacji wesela w Kanie. Cała sytuacja miała miejsce si około 10 km. od Nazaretu, gdzie na przyjęcie zostali zaproszeni Jezus z Matką i Apostołami. Tradycyjne wesele trwało 3 tygodnie, dzieląc się radością nowych małżonków zaproszono całą wieś. Z technicznego i logistycznego punktu widzenia rodzice i młode małżeństwo potrzebowali dużo jedzenia i picia, zwłaszcza wina, które było podstawowym napojem, podobnie jak dla nas dzisiaj herbata czy kawa. W przeciwnej sytuacji gospodarze powinni się okryć wstydem, że nie byli przygotowani na przyjęcie. Była to dość niewygodna i skomplikowana sytuacja, która mogła zniszczyć autorytet rodziny.

 

Ten przypadek i sytuacja miały miejsce podczas wesela w Kanie, gdy goście świętowali z rodziną, skończyło się wino, i w tym momencie zareagowała Matka Jezusa mówiąc; pomóż im i uwolnij ich od wstydu. Maryja jako kobieta i Matka podjęła działania, aby pomóc ludziom, chociaż słowa Chrystusa były jasne; mój czas jeszcze nie nadszedł.

 

Ona prosi Syna; pomóż im, ponieważ potrzebują Twojej pomocy. Maryja jest tam, gdzie ludzie jej potrzebują, ponieważ jest pełna wrażliwości i współczucia matki. Nie poddaje się, ale błaga Jezusa.

The Lord's Baptism... Niedziela Chrztu Pańskiego...

Luke 3:15-16,​21-22

'Someone is coming who will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire'

A feeling of expectancy had grown among the people, who were beginning to think that John might be the Christ, so John declared before them all, ‘I baptise you with water, but someone is coming, someone who is more powerful than I am, and I am not fit to undo the strap of his sandals; he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire. Now when all the people had been baptised and while Jesus after his own baptism was at prayer, heaven opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily shape, like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; my favour rests on you.’

      Today is the last day of Christmas Time. Moreover, we celebrate a very important day – the day when Jesus Christ arrived on the shore of Jordan River and was baptised. People who gathered there heard the words of God: “This is my beloved Son. My favours rest on him.”

 

Those words are also related to us. We are the beloved sons and daughters of God. During baptism God declares that we are His children. Today's holiday reminds us that we are adopted children of the Creator.

 

The mystery of baptism is connected with the mystery of death and resurrection of Jesus Christ; this moment of baptism is also the beginning of our way to heaven. For us it is a privilege, and a challenge.

 

We were chosen by God. As His children, we all have royal dignity. We now belong to the royal family because our King is Jesus Christ. His Kingdom is different from the kingdoms we know from our world. God is the King, so we, as the children of God, also posses the King’s dignity. Every day we are closer to his Kingdom in Heaven.

 

There is also another value of our baptism. Just like in the Old Testament there were prophets who proclaimed the word of God, we should also act as His witnesses. Everyone who was baptized has the power and mandate to spread the word of God, especially in daily life. This is our task, and we should proclaim God’s word in the modern world. 

 

And last, but not least, baptism is also a universal priesthood. It could sound strange, because as we know priesthood is reserved for priests, but in fact as Christians we all have opportunity to offer our services in Church. As Christians, we have the dignity of universal priesthood. God calls us to offer our services through charity and love. Our sacrifice is a part of worship of God. Our love, charity and testimony are gifts, which we offer to God, and thus fulfil our universal priesthood. 

 

May God bless us all through our Baptism. Amen.

The gift of faith... Dar wiary...

 

John 1:1-18

The Word was made flesh, and lived among us

In the beginning was the Word:

and the Word was with God

and the Word was God.

He was with God in the beginning.

Through him all things came to be,

not one thing had its being but through him.

All that came to be had life in him

and that life was the light of men,

a light that shines in the dark,

a light that darkness could not overpower.

A man came, sent by God.

His name was John.

He came as a witness,

as a witness to speak for the light,

so that everyone might believe through him.

He was not the light,

only a witness to speak for the light.

The Word was the true light

that enlightens all men;

and he was coming into the world.

He was in the world

that had its being through him,

and the world did not know him.

He came to his own domain

and his own people did not accept him.

But to all who did accept him

he gave power to become children of God,

to all who believe in the name of him

who was born not out of human stock

or urge of the flesh

or will of man

but of God himself.

The Word was made flesh,

he lived among us,

and we saw his glory,

the glory that is his as the only Son of the Father,

full of grace and truth.

John appears as his witness. He proclaims:

‘This is the one of whom I said:

He who comes after me ranks before me

because he existed before me.’

Indeed, from his fullness we have, all of us, received –

yes, grace in return for grace,

since, though the Law was given through Moses,

grace and truth have come through Jesus Christ.

No one has ever seen God;

it is the only Son, who is nearest to the Father’s heart,

who has made him known.

    We are still celebrating the Nativity of Christ. Today is the Second Sunday of Christmas and we focus on the reading from the Gospel of John – the youngest of all Jesus’ Apostles. While we are reading the gospel, the text seems to be very enigmatic and philosophic.

 

This text contains the whole truth about God’s Revelation. It tells us that God has sent his Son to the world. John the Evangelist writes that the Word was made flesh, what means, the Eternal Word became a man. The Heavenly Father had promised His Son, and Jesus Christ, by his incarnation, came to the people. It was the fulfilment of the God’s promise. Our Father is trustful. His oaths are credible. 

 

The Incarnation of Christ is the proof that Jesus became one of us. All that our Lord promised became truth. 

 

What kind of answer should be given to God from us? God kept His promise. Our response should be our faith. We cannot experience God using our senses, but through our faith we may develop and confirm that God really exist. Our belief in God is a supernatural gift which cannot be achieved by our mind, abilities and science. 

 

It comes from God and only from Him, the gift of faith it is the way to God and His Kingdom. We should protect it and cherish it by the sacraments and prayer. Why? Because our relationship is like fragile glass which might be crushed. We can easily lose it. 

 

 

God was made flesh; Jesus Christ wants to be with us. Faith is the only way that leads us to Him. Let’s protect our belief. I would like to repeat the words of Thomas the Apostle: My Lord and my God. Jesus Christ, increase my faith. Amen.

Wcielenie Chrystusa jest dowodem na to, że Jezus stał się jednym z nas. Wszystko, co obiecał nasz Pan, stało się prawdą.

 

A my jaką odpowiedź powinniśmy dać Bogu? Bóg dotrzymał swojej obietnicy. Naszą odpowiedzią powinna być wiara. Nie możemy doświadczyć Boga za pomocą zmysłów, ale poprzez naszą wiarę możemy rozwinąć i potwierdzić, że Bóg naprawdę istnieje. Nasze zaufanie Bogu jest nadprzyrodzonym darem, którego nie można osiągnąć za pomocą naszego umysłu, zdolności i nauki.

 

Łaska wiary pochodzi od Boga i tylko od Niego. Dar wiary jest drogą do Boga i Jego Królestwa. Powinniśmy Boży dar chronić i pielęgnować z pomocą sakramentów i modlitwy. Dlaczego? Ponieważ nasza relacja jest kruche jak szkło, które można stłuc. Łatwo można ją zatracić.

 

 

Bóg stał się Ciałem; Jezus Chrystus chce być z nami. Wiara jest jedyną drogą, która prowadzi nas do Niego. Chrońmy naszą wiarę. Chciałbym powtórzyć za Tomaszem Apostołem: Pan mój i Bóg mój. Jezu Chryste, przymnóż mi wiary. Amen.
