Matthew 5:13-16

Your light must shine in the sight of men

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘You are the salt of the earth. But if salt becomes tasteless, what can make it salty again? It is good for nothing, and can only be thrown out to be trampled underfoot by men.

  ‘You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill-top cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp to put it under a tub; they put it on the lamp-stand where it shines for everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine in the sight of men, so that, seeing your good works, they may give the praise to your Father in heaven.’

    While we are reading the Gospel of Mathew, we may notice that for Jesus we are the salt and light of this world. These words refer to Christian foundations. Salt makes our meals tasty, light shines over dark places, wherever we live. 

 

The comparison to the light and salt indicates a very crucial task that was given us – to become witnesses of Christianity. When we have a look at the history of the Church, Jesus’ mission was to bring people back to God. Lots of people were fascinated with Him and his teaching. The continuation of the God’s mission was the real involvement of the Apostles who started proclaiming the Good News about Jesus and His salvation. 

 

 

Using the words from the today’s Gospel, they were the salt and light of God. 

 

The power of Christianity is a holly life. The faith comes from hearths of people and helps us to find the clarity and honesty of the Christian life. 

 

 

If Christ’s message depends on clarity and honesty, we may think about what the main reason for the crisis of our faith is. Why our faith is so weak and unpopular? Why so many people leave the Church and are not interested in faith? 

 

The main reason is the lack of clarity. For many of us, religion and Catholicism both means the same thing but there is no unity between our faith and life. Many people treat it as two, totally separated things,

 

Another problem is that often we cannot properly defend our faith. We are very divided: morally and dogmatically and interpret the teaching of God in our own way, to be pleased to everyone for the price of truth and faithfulness to Christ, otherwise, we can meet with aggression from others, and humiliation harming our dignity. 

 

What destroys us, is the lack of unity of faith and life. The enemies of Christ use it to create divisions among Christians. They know that few people are able to defend Christ. They know it, but a lot of Christians are indifferent to the faith. We can notice great ignorance. 

 

Faith and life have become completely different spheres for us. 

 

The words of Jesus remind us that we were sent by him. We are the salt and light of Christianity. And we should be an example of Christian life for other people.

 

 

(Mt 5, 13-16) 
Jezus powiedział do swoich uczniów: "Wy jesteście solą ziemi. Lecz jeśli sól utraci swój smak, czymże ją posolić? Na nic się już nie przyda, chyba na wyrzucenie i podeptanie przez ludzi. Wy jesteście światłem świata. Nie może się ukryć miasto położone na górze. Nie zapala się też lampy i nie umieszcza pod korcem, ale na świeczniku, aby świeciła wszystkim, którzy są w domu. Tak niech wasze światło jaśnieje przed ludźmi, aby widzieli wasze dobre uczynki i chwalili Ojca waszego, który jest w niebie".

   Czytając Ewangelię Mateusza możemy zauważyć, że dla Jezusa jesteśmy solą i światłem tego świata. Te słowa odnoszą się do chrześcijańskich podstaw. Sól sprawia, że nasze posiłki są smaczne, światło świeci nad ciemnymi miejscami, gdziekolwiek mieszkamy.

 

Porównanie nas do światła i soli wskazuje na bardzo ważne zadanie, jakie zostało nam postawione – bycie świadkami chrześcijaństwa. Gdy spojrzymy na historię Kościoła, misją Jezusa było przyprowadzenie ludzi z powrotem do Boga. Wielu ludzi było zafascynowanych Nim i Jego nauką. Kontynuacją Bożej misji było rzeczywiste zaangażowanie Apostołów, którzy rozpoczęli głoszenie Dobrej Nowiny o Jezusie i Jego zbawieniu.

 

 

Używając słów z dzisiejszej Ewangelii, byli oni solą i światłem Boga.

 

Siłą chrześcijaństwa jest święte życie. Wiara wypływa z ludzkich serc i pomaga nam odnaleźć jasność i szczerość życia chrześcijańskiego.

 

 

Jeśli orędzie Chrystusa zależy od jasności i szczerości, to możemy się zastanowić, jaka jest główna przyczyna kryzysu naszej wiary. Dlaczego nasza wiara jest tak słaba i niepopularna? Dlaczego tak wielu ludzi opuszcza Kościół i nie interesuje się wiarą?

 

Głównym powodem jest brak jasności. Dla wielu z nas religia i katolicyzm oznaczają to samo, ale nie ma jedności między naszą wiarą a życiem. Wiele osób traktuje to jako dwie zupełnie odrębne rzeczy,

 

Innym problemem jest to, że często nie potrafimy właściwie bronić naszej wiary. Jesteśmy bardzo podzieleni: moralnie i dogmatycznie interpretując naukę Bożą po swojemu, aby wszystkim się podobać za cenę prawdy i wierności Chrystusowi, w przeciwnym razie możemy spotkać się z agresją ze strony innych i upokorzeniem godzącym w naszą godność.

 

To, co nas niszczy, to brak jedności wiary i życia. Wrogowie Chrystusa wykorzystują to do tworzenia podziałów wśród chrześcijan. Wiedzą, że niewielu jest w stanie obronić Chrystusa. Oni to wiedzą, ale wielu chrześcijan jest obojętnych na wiarę. Możemy zauważyć wielką ignorancję.

 

Wiara i życie stały się dla nas zupełnie różnymi sferami.

 

Słowa Jezusa przypominają nam, że zostaliśmy posłani przez Niego. Jesteśmy solą i światłem chrześcijaństwa. My powinniśmy być przykładem chrześcijańskiego życia dla innych ludzi.
