Luke 16:1-13

You cannot be the slave of both God and money

Jesus said to his disciples:

  ‘There was a rich man and he had a steward denounced to him for being wasteful with his property. He called for the man and said, “What is this I hear about you? Draw me up an account of your stewardship because you are not to be my steward any longer.” Then the steward said to himself, “Now that my master is taking the stewardship from me, what am I to do? Dig? I am not strong enough. Go begging? I should be too ashamed. Ah, I know what I will do to make sure that when I am dismissed from office there will be some to welcome me into their homes.”

  Then he called his master’s debtors one by one. To the first he said, “How much do you owe my master?” “One hundred measures of oil” was the reply. The steward said, “Here, take your bond; sit down straight away and write fifty.” To another he said, “And you, sir, how much do you owe?” “One hundred measures of wheat” was the reply. The steward said, “Here, take your bond and write eighty.”

  ‘The master praised the dishonest steward for his astuteness. For the children of this world are more astute in dealing with their own kind than are the children of light.

  ‘And so I tell you this: use money, tainted as it is, to win you friends, and thus make sure that when it fails you, they will welcome you into the tents of eternity. The man who can be trusted in little things can be trusted in great; the man who is dishonest in little things will be dishonest in great. If then you cannot be trusted with money, that tainted thing, who will trust you with genuine riches? And if you cannot be trusted with what is not yours, who will give you what is your very own?

  ‘No servant can be the slave of two masters: he will either hate the first and love the second or treat the first with respect and the second with scorn. You cannot be the slave both of God and of money.’

   I think today's Gospel is very controversial. Jesus uses The Parable of the Unjust Steward. Of course, Jesus does not want to approve of the lack of justice, but he shows, how this man tried to secure his future.

 

God through this Gospel wants to show that we should always fight for salvation. In the second part of the Gospel, He said that everyone has a great gift which can serve as the way to heaven. 

 

This gift is our task, our challenge that can help us achieve Eternal Life.

 

Sometimes people worry about so many things which seem to be very important, but they forget about what the most crucial thing for us is – redemption. 

 

Yes, of course, every day we should do our best, for ourselves and for other people, because Christianity is the religion of reality.

 

But we should not forget what the most important thing and fight with the same determination for Eternal Life is, like the steward from the Gospel fought for himself. 

 

The parable of today's Gospel and this determination are present in people that we can call heroes of faith. A lot of people, called missionaries, proclaim Good News in different places of the world. Those people sacrifice everything to bring God’s words to people that often have never heard about God. Thanks to the people of goodwill, they can learn about Jesus Christ. We hear about the biggest sacrifice of the missionaries because so often they even die for Christ and Church. For them, proclaiming Gospel is more important than life. They are the biggest heroes of Christianity who devote everything to the glory of God and the salvation of people.

 

Saint Paul wrote in his letter to the Philippians: "[...] work out your own salvation with fear and trembling [...]" 2, 12.

Jezus powiedział do swoich uczniów: ”Pewien bogaty człowiek miał rządcę, którego oskarżono przed nim, że trwoni jego majątek. Przywołał go do siebie i rzekł mu: "Cóż to słyszę o tobie? Zdaj sprawę z twego zarządu, bo już nie będziesz mógł być rządcą". Na to rządca rzekł sam do siebie: "Co ja pocznę, skoro mój pan pozbawia mię zarządu? Kopać nie mogę, żebrać się wstydzę. Wiem, co uczynię, żeby mię ludzie przyjęli do swoich domów, gdy będę usunięty z zarządu". Przywołał więc do siebie każdego z dłużników swego pana i zapytał pierwszego: "Ile jesteś winien mojemu panu?". Ten odpowiedział: "Sto beczek oliwy". On mu rzekł: "Weź swoje zobowiązanie, siadaj prędko i napisz: pięćdziesiąt". Następnie pytał drugiego: "A ty, ile jesteś winien?". Ten odrzekł: "Sto korcy pszenicy". Mówi mu: "Weź swoje zobowiązanie i napisz: osiemdziesiąt". Pan pochwalił nieuczciwego rządcę, że roztropnie postąpił. Bo synowie tego świata roztropniejsi są w stosunkach z ludźmi podobnymi sobie niż synowie światła. Ja także wam powiadam: "Zyskujcie sobie przyjaciół niegodziwą mamoną, aby gdy wszystko się skończy, przyjęto was do wiecznych przybytków. Kto w drobnej rzeczy jest wierny, ten i w wielkiej będzie wierny; a kto w drobnej rzeczy jest nieuczciwy, ten i w wielkiej nieuczciwy będzie. Jeśli więc w zarządzie niegodziwą mamoną nie okazaliście się wierni, prawdziwe dobro kto wam powierzy? Jeśli w zarządzie cudzym dobrem nie okazaliście się wierni, kto wam da wasze? Żaden sługa nie może dwom panom służyć. Gdyż albo jednego będzie nienawidził, a drugiego miłował; albo z tamtym będzie trzymał, a tym wzgardzi. Nie możecie służyć Bogu i Mamonie”.

  Myślę, że dzisiejsza Ewangelia jest bardzo kontrowersyjna. Jezus używa przypowieści o niesprawiedliwym zarządcy. Oczywiście Jezus nie chce aprobować braku sprawiedliwości, ale pokazuje, jak ten człowiek starał się zabezpieczyć swoją przyszłość.

 

Bóg poprzez tą Ewangelię chce pokazać, że zawsze powinniśmy walczyć o zbawienie. W drugiej części Ewangelii autor podkreśla, że każdy ma wielki dar, który może służyć jako droga do nieba.

 

Ten dar jest naszym zadaniem, naszym wyzwaniem, które może nam pomóc osiągnąć Życie Wieczne.

 

Czasami ludzie martwią się tak wieloma rzeczami, które wydają się bardzo ważne, ale zapominają o tym, co jest dla nas najważniejsze – odkupieniu.

 

Oczywiście każdego dnia powinniśmy dawać z siebie wszystko, dla siebie i dla innych ludzi, ponieważ chrześcijaństwo jest religią rzeczywistości.

 

Ale nie powinniśmy zapominać, co jest najważniejsze i walczyć z taką samą determinacją o Życie Wieczne, jak zarządcza z Ewangelii walczył o siebie.

 

Przypowieść dzisiejszej Ewangelii i determinacja są obecne w ludziach, których możemy nazwać bohaterami wiary. Wiele osób, zwanych misjonarzami, głosi Dobrą Nowinę w różnych miejscach świata. Ci ludzie poświęcają wszystko, aby nieść słowa Boga ludziom, którzy często nigdy o Bogu nie słyszeli. Dzięki ludziom dobrej woli mogą poznać Jezusa Chrystusa. Czasami słyszymy o największej ofierze misjonarzy, umierających za Chrystusa i Kościół. Dla nich głoszenie Ewangelii jest ważniejsze niż życie. To najwięksi bohaterowie chrześcijaństwa, którzy wszystko poświęcają na chwałę Boga i zbawienie ludzi.

 

Św. Paweł pisał w swoim liście do Filipian: „[...] z bojaźnią i drżeniem zabiegajcie o własne zbawienie [...]” 2, 12.
