Matthew 6:1-6,16-18

Your Father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Be careful not to parade your good deeds before men to attract their notice; by doing this you will lose all reward from your Father in heaven. So when you give alms, do not have it trumpeted before you; this is what the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win men’s admiration. I tell you solemnly, they have had their reward. But when you give alms, your left hand must not know what your right is doing; your almsgiving must be secret, and your Father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you.

  ‘And when you pray, do not imitate the hypocrites: they love to say their prayers standing up in the synagogues and at the street corners for people to see them; I tell you solemnly, they have had their reward. But when you pray, go to your private room and, when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in that secret place, and your Father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you.

  ‘When you fast do not put on a gloomy look as the hypocrites do: they pull long faces to let men know they are fasting. I tell you solemnly, they have had their reward. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that no one will know you are fasting except your Father who sees all that is done in secret; and your Father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you.’

Reading today's Gospel of Matthew, we can notice, Jesus gives us the "spiritual rule" for 40 days of Lent. Christian job during these days is the practicing of prayer, fast and almsgiving in secret: " ...when you pray, go to your private room and, when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in that secret place, and your Father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you". 

 

 

Meditating deeply the words of Christ, the guidance is oriented on man's heart, soul and mind. Indeed, whilst this time, the conversion of our life should be done in our inner life.  There are going on the most important things in life.

 

 

Today we start to incorporate the three things from the Gospel of Mathew, it means: prayer, fast and almsgiving. We have a tendency, while many people take these self-sacrifices or a good decision, to prove themselves, I can manage, I can do it and that.  But the words of Jesus indicate on us about the need of conversion. God can touch our heart with his sacramental power of forgiveness and healing. This is not a time of heroes and proving myself of anything, but the time of God’s grace, which does create our life better, if we want to. 

 

My will of spiritual reaction, the involvement of heart, soul and mind do make sense of Ash Wednesday.

 

Let us pray, to this Lent may be the time of my spiritual journey to God, and the real reconciliation to Him. 

(Mt 6, 1-6. 16-18) 
Jezus powiedział do swoich uczniów: "Strzeżcie się, żebyście uczynków pobożnych nie wykonywali przed ludźmi po to, aby was widzieli; inaczej bowiem nie będziecie mieli nagrody u Ojca waszego, który jest w niebie. Kiedy więc dajesz jałmużnę, nie trąb przed sobą, jak obłudnicy czynią w synagogach i na ulicach, aby ich ludzie chwalili. Zaprawdę, powiadam wam: ci otrzymali już swoją nagrodę. Kiedy zaś ty dajesz jałmużnę, niech nie wie lewa twoja ręka, co czyni prawa, aby twoja jałmużna pozostała w ukryciu. A Ojciec twój, który widzi w ukryciu, odda tobie. Gdy się modlicie, nie bądźcie jak obłudnicy. Oni to lubią w synagogach i na rogach ulic wystawać i modlić się, żeby się ludziom pokazać. Zaprawdę, powiadam wam: otrzymali już swoją nagrodę. Ty zaś, gdy chcesz się modlić, wejdź do swej izdebki, zamknij drzwi i módl się do Ojca twego, który jest w ukryciu. A Ojciec twój, który widzi w ukryciu, odda tobie. Kiedy pościcie, nie bądźcie posępni jak obłudnicy. Przybierają oni wygląd ponury, aby pokazać ludziom, że poszczą. Zaprawdę, powiadam wam, już odebrali swoją nagrodę. Ty zaś, gdy pościsz, namaść sobie głowę i obmyj twarz, aby nie ludziom pokazać, że pościsz, ale Ojcu twemu, który jest w ukryciu. A Ojciec twój, który widzi w ukryciu, odda tobie".

   Czytając dzisiejszą Ewangelię Mateusza, możemy zauważyć, że Jezus daje nam „duchową regułę” na 40 dni Wielkiego Postu. Chrześcijańska praca w tych dniach to praktykowanie modlitwy, postu i jałmużny w ukryciu: „(...) ty zaś, gdy chcesz się modlić, wejdź do swej izdebki, zamknij drzwi i módl się do Ojca twego, który jest w ukryciu. A Ojciec twój, który widzi w ukryciu, odda tobie". 

Rozmyślając głęboko nad słowami Chrystusa, zauważmy  kierunek na serce, duszę i umysł człowieka. 

Dziś zaczynamy włączać trzy rzeczy z Ewangelii Mateusza, to znaczy: modlitwę, post i jałmużnę. Mamy tendencję, kiedy to wielu ludzi podejmuje jakieś poświęcenie lub dobrą decyzję, aby sobie udowodnić, dam radę. Ale słowa Jezusa wskazują nam na potrzebę nawrócenia. Bóg może poruszyć nasze serca swoją sakramentalną mocą przebaczenia i uzdrowienia. To nie jest czas bohaterów i udowadniania sobie czegokolwiek, ale czas łaski Bożej, która stwarza lepsze życie, jeśli tego chcemy.

Moja wola duchowej reakcji, zaangażowanie serca, duszy i umysłu ma sens w Środę Popielcową.

Módlmy się, aby ten Wielki Post był czasem mojej duchowej drogi do Boga i prawdziwego pojednania z Nim.
