Matthew 18:15-20

If your brother listens to you, you have won back your brother

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘If your brother does something wrong, go and have it out with him alone, between your two selves. If he listens to you, you have won back your brother. If he does not listen, take one or two others along with you: the evidence of two or three witnesses is required to sustain any charge. But if he refuses to listen to these, report it to the community; and if he refuses to listen to the community, treat him like a pagan or a tax collector.

  ‘I tell you solemnly, whatever you bind on earth shall be considered bound in heaven; whatever you loose on earth shall be considered loosed in heaven.

  ‘I tell you solemnly once again, if two of you on earth agree to ask anything at all, it will be granted to you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three meet in my name, I shall be there with them.’

   The Author of the Gospel, St. Mathew, quotes the words of Jesus that indicate a very important thing. Christ talks about a fraternal warning, in the name of love and brotherhood. The task which is given by Jesus is pretty demanding. If our brothers or sisters are doing something wrong, we should be able tell them, face to face, about it. It demands a lot of courage and good will. 

 

The teaching of Christ points out our responsibility for other people. We should not say, seeing something wrong, that we don’t care about it or that is not our business.  

 

Our proper reaction may help to save the spiritual life and eternity of other people. 

 

Certainly, it is not an easy job because of the misleading meaning of freedom and independence. Today, many people feel offended if someone tells them off in the name of goodness and love. 

 

 It’s easier to gossip, condemn or hate if we see something wrong in the behaviour of our neighbours. 

 

Someone once said: God save me from my friends. I can protect myself from my enemies. 

 

So often we become those unfair friends, when we are building our own sense of primacy. 

 

This task from the today’s Gospel is very difficult, but before God we are responsible for ourselves and our brothers and sisters in faith. Jesus, give us your power to react to evil. Amen.   

   

(Mt 18, 15-20) 
Jezus powiedział do swoich uczniów: "Gdy brat twój zgrzeszy przeciw tobie, idź i upomnij go w cztery oczy. Jeśli cię usłucha, pozyskasz swego brata. Jeśli zaś nie usłucha, weź z sobą jeszcze jednego albo dwóch, żeby na słowie dwóch albo trzech świadków oparła się cała sprawa. Jeśli i tych nie usłucha, donieś Kościołowi. A jeśli nawet Kościoła nie usłucha, niech ci będzie jak poganin i celnik. Zaprawdę, powiadam wam: Wszystko, cokolwiek zwiążecie na ziemi, będzie związane w niebie, a co rozwiążecie na ziemi, będzie rozwiązane w niebie. Dalej, zaprawdę, powiadam wam: Jeśli dwóch z was na ziemi zgodnie o coś prosić będzie, to wszystko otrzymają od mojego Ojca, który jest w niebie. Bo gdzie są dwaj albo trzej zebrani w imię moje, tam jestem pośród nich".

Autor Ewangelii św. Mateusz relacjonuje przemówienie Jezusa, który wskazuje na bardzo ważną rzecz. Chrystus mówi o braterskim ostrzeżeniu w imię miłości i braterstwa. Zadanie, które daje Jezus, jest dość wymagające, aby porozmawiać twarzą w twarz z naszym bratem lub siostrą i powiedzieć im, jeśli zrobią coś złego. Ta konfrontacja wymaga dużo odwagi i dobrej woli.

Nauka Chrystusa wskazywała na naszą odpowiedzialność wobec innych. Nie mogę powiedzieć, widząc coś złego, nie obchodzi mnie to, to nie moja sprawa.

To dotyczy także naszej duchowości. Nasza właściwa reakcja może chronić duchowość i wieczność wielu.

Z pewnością ta praca nie jest łatwa ze względu na mylące znaczenie wolności i niezależności. Wielu ludzi czuje się dziś urażonych, jeśli ktoś ich napomina w imię dobra i miłości.

Ta trudność rodzi kolejny problem.

 Łatwiej jest plotkować, potępiać, nienawidzić, widząc coś złego w oku sąsiada.

Ktoś powiedział: Boże, chroń mnie przed fałszywymi przyjaciółmi, ponieważ sam obronię się przed moimi nieprzyjaciółmi. 

Tak często, krytykując bez miłości i empatii, możemy być tymi niesprawiedliwymi i fałszywymi przyjaciółmi.

To zadanie dzisiejszej Ewangelii jest bardzo trudne, ale przed Bogiem jestem odpowiedzialny za siebie i moich braci i siostry w wierze. Jezu, daj mi moc reagowania na zło w moim życiu i życiu mojego bliźniego. Amen.
